Notes: Abstract  A series of yeast expression plasmids which comprise segments of the cDNA sequences encoding rat topo IIα have been constructed. The transcription of these constructs is under the control of the yeast GAL1 promoter. Galactose-dependent expression of the cloned rat topo IIα cDNA complemented a yeast top2 ts mutation, as well as a deletion mutation at the yeast TOP2 locus. Truncation of 12 N-terminal amino acids and/or 158 C-terminal amino acids of rat topo IIα had no effect on its ability functionally to substitute for top2 ts . Moreover, a cDNA construct with mutated putative leucine zipper domain (amino acids 993–1013) retained the complementation activity. These observations suggest that transformants capable of conditional topo IIα expression can be exploited as a useful model system for studies on the structure-function relationships of wild-type and mutated topo IIα, as well as the interplay of potential antitumor drugs with the enzyme.

Notes: Abstract A new measuring method is suggested for determining the time constant of a thermocouple wire to be applied for the measurement of the true fluid temperatures in varying flow states. Based on the techniques of internal heating which are commonly used to measure mean time constants, we extend the existing method to measure instantaneous time constants continuously. A method of measurement and analysis is presented and verified experimentally.

Notes: Abstract The electrical conductivity and thermoelectric power for solid solutions of La2Cu0.9M0.1O4 (M = Mn, Fe, Co and Ni) prepared by polymeric precursor synthesis were measured between 300 and 1173 K to test its suitability as a thermoelectric material. Fe-, Mn-and Ni-doped compositions exhibited a metal-semiconductor transition with decreasing temperature, whereas Co doping showed a semiconducting behaviour in the entire temperature range of measurement. With Cu-sites doping in La2CuO4, power factors were not enhanced.

Notes: Abstract The oxidation behavior of Ni-Cr alloys with various chromium concentrations and particle sizes of a dispersion of 10 vol.% Al2O3 was observed in 1 atm of oxygen at 1000°C. This study was intended to determine the critical chromium concentration to form a protective Cr2O3 oxide layer for different Al2O3 particle sizes. The oxidation rate of Ni-Cr alloys containing 10 vol.% Al2O3 followed a parabolic rate law and a Cr2O3 protective layer continuously formed when the oxidation rate decreased rapidly. Times to form a continuous and protective Cr2O3 layer during the initial oxidation shortened as the size of the dispersion decreased. The critical chromium concentration to form a protective Cr2O3 layer in the oxide scale was 6∼9 wt.% and was related strongly to the particle size of the Al2O3 dispersion.

Notes: Abstract An intracellular leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) fromPenicillium citrinum (IFO 6352) was purified to homogeneity using three successive purification steps. The enzyme has a native molecular mass of 63 kDa using HPLC gel filtration analysis and a molecular mass of 65 kDa when using SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This monomeric aminopeptidase showed maximum enzyme activity at pH 8.5. An optimum temperature was 45–50°C whenl-Leu-p-nitroanilide (pNA) was the substrate, and enzyme activity drastically decreased above 60°C. The Michaelis-Menten constants forl-Leu-pNA andl-Met-pNA were 2.7 mM and 1.8 mM, respectively. When the enzyme reacted with biosynthetic methionyl human growth hormone, it showed high specificity for N-terminal methionine residue and recognized a stop sequence (Xaa-Pro). The aminopeptidase was inactivated by EDTA or 1,10-phenanthroline, indicating that it is a metallo-exoprotease. Enzyme activity was restored to 90% of maximal activity by addition of Co2+ ions. The activity of EDTA-treated enzyme was restored by addition of Zn2+, but reconstitution with Ca2+, Mg2+ or Mn2+ restored some enzyme activity. It is likely that Co2+ ions play an important role in the catalysis or stability of thePenicillium citrinum aminopeptidase, as zinc plays a similar function in other leucine aminopeptidases.

Notes: Bacillus thuringiensis subsp tochigiensis HD868 was identified as a bacteriocin producer which exhibited a bactericidal effect against closely related species. This bacteriocin designated as tochicin, was partially purified by 75% ammonium sulfate precipitation followed by subsequent dialysis. This partially purified tochicin showed a narrow antibacterial spectrum of activity against most of 20 typical B. thuringiensis strains and a strain of B. cereus, but not against other bacteria and yeasts tested. The antibacterial activity of tochicin on sensitive indicator cells disappeared completely by proteinase K treatment (1 mg ml−1), which indicates its proteinaceous nature. Tochicin was very stable throughout the range of pH 3.0–9.0 and was relatively heat-stable at 90°C, but bacteriocin activity was not detected after boiling for 30 min. The relationship between cell growth and bacteriocin production was studied in a semi-defined medium. Tochicin activity was detected at the mid-log growth phase, reached the maximum at the early stationary phase, but decreased after the stationary phase. Direct detection of tochicin activity on sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel suggested it has an apparent molecular mass of about 10.5 kDa. Tochicin exhibited a bactericidal activity against B. thuringiensis subsp thompsoni HD522 in phosphate buffer (pH 7.0).

Notes: Abstract Virtual reality (VR) has been making inroads into medicine in a broad spectrum of applications, including medical education, surgical training, telemedicine, surgery and the treatment of phobias and eating disorders. The extensive and innovative applications of VR in medicine, made possible by the rapid advancements in information technology, have been driven by the need to reduce the cost of healthcare while enhancing the quality of life for human beings. In this paper, we discuss the design, development and realisation of an innovative technology known as the Georgia Tech Wearable Motherboard™ (GTWM), or the “Smart Shirt”. The principal advantage of GTWM is that it provides, for the first time, a very systematic way of monitoring the vital signs of humans in an unobtrusive manner. The flexible databus integrated into the structure transmits the information to monitoring devices such as an EKG machine, a temperature recorder, a voice recorder, etc. GTWM is lightweight and can be worn easily by anyone, from infants to senior citizens. We present the universal characteristics of the interface pioneered by the Georgia Tech Wearable Motherboard™ and explore the potential applications of the technology in areas ranging from combat to geriatric care. The GTWM is the realisation of a personal information processing system that gives new meaning to the termubiquitous computing. Just as the spreadsheet pioneered the field of information processing that brought “computing to the masses”, it is anticipated that the Georgia Tech Wearable Motherboard™ will bring personalised and affordable healthcare monitoring to the population at large.

Notes: Abstract Jinhae Bay, a semi-enclosed, tide-dominated coastal embayment on the southeastern coast of Korea, receives large amounts of sediment derived from the Nakdong River. The irregular surface of the acoustic basement is overlain by a modern sedimentary sequence up to 25 m thick, characterized by an acoustically semitransparent subbottom. Sediments, consisting mainly of terrigenous and bioturbated mud, accumulate at a rate of 2–5 mm/yr. About 21% of the suspended sediments discharged from the Nakdong River, that is approximately 1.0 × 106 tons per year, accumulate in Jinhae Bay. Modern sedimentation began probably at about 5000 yr BP, when sea level approached its present level.

Notes: Abstract High-resolution seismic profiles across the shelf margin and trough region of the Korea Strait reveal five shallow, near-surface facies units. These are relict coastal deposits, relict delta deposits, slumps and slides, and trough lag deposits. Most deposits represent a lowstand systems tract, formed during the last lowstand of sea level. Relict coastal deposits represent a linear sediment body along the present shelf margin at water depths of 120–150 m, whereas relict delta deposits occur on the gentle, southwestern slope of the trough at water depths of about 150–200 m. Slumps and slides are dominant at the base of slope in the central trough region. Sediments on the central trough floor were partly eroded and redistributed by strong currents, resulting in lag deposits.
