    Notes: Abstract Differential induction of enzymes involved in anaerobic metabolism of aromatic substrates was studied in the denitrifying bacterium Thauera aromatica. This metabolism is divided into (1) peripheral reactions transforming the aromatic growth substrates to the common intermediate benzoyl-CoA, (2) the central benzoyl-CoA pathway comprising ring-reduction of benzoyl-CoA and subsequent β-oxidation to 3-hydroxypimelyl-CoA, and (3) the pathway of β-oxidation of 3-hydroxypimelyl-CoA to three acetyl-CoA and CO2. Regulation was studied by three methods. 1. Determination of protein patterns of cells grown on different substrates. This revealed several strongly substrate-induced polypeptides that were missing in cells grown on benzoate or other intermediates of the respective metabolic pathways. 2. Measurement of activities of known enzymes involved in this metabolism in cells grown on different substrates. The enzyme pattern found is consistent with the regulatory pattern deduced from simultaneous adaptation of cells to utilisation of other aromatic substrates. 3. Immunological detection of catabolic enzymes in cells grown on different substrates. Benzoate-CoA ligase and 4-hydroxybenzoate-CoA ligase were detected only in cells yielding the respective enzyme activity. However, presence of the subunits of benzoyl-CoA reductase and 4-hydroxybenzoyl-CoA reductase was also recorded in some cell batches lacking enzyme activity. This possibly indicates an additional level of regulation on protein level for these two reductases.

    Notes: Abstract The pectinases produced byPenicillium frequentans were subjected to pectin- or sodium polypectate-PAGE. The fungus secreted one endo- and one exo-polygalacturonase during the first 10 h of incubation, either in media supplemented with pectin or in the absence of carbohydrate source. After 17 h of cultivation, another two exo-and three endo-polygalacturonases were detected in cultures supplemented with pectin. The results indicate that two constitutive polygalacturonases are secreted initially, followed by the synthesis of other inducible pectinases, in a sequential production of the pectinolytic complex. Monogalacturonic acid and sodium polypectate were better inducers for exo- than for endo-polygalacturonases, indicating that these enzymes are independently controlled.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Metamorphosebedingungen und die Petrogenese der Amphibolite von Kef Lakhal und der mit ihnen assoziierten Amphibolit- und Olivin-reichen Linsen werden diskutiert. Die Kef Lakhal-Amphibolite enthalten Plagioklas, dessen Zusammensetzung von An85 bis An12 schwankt, und Ca-armen, normal zonierten Granat (〈 9 Gew % CaO). Sie wurden unter Bedingungen der obenen Amphibolitfacies metamorphosiert. Die Amphibolit-Linsen führen stets Ca-reichen (An97-78) Plagioklas und doppelt zonierten Granat (bis zu 14 Gew % Ca0). Die Granatzonierung läßt erkennen, daß die Linsen drei Metamorphose-Phasen, die auch sonst in dem Massiv nachgewiesen wurden, ausgesetzt waren. Die letzte Phase erreichte Bedingungen von ungefähr T = 700 ± 80 °C und P = 8–10 kb. Dies weist auf zwei, miteinander nicht verwandte magmatische Gesteinsabfolgen hin; dieses Konzept wird durch die chemische Zusammensetzung und durch quantitative Modellierung unterstützt. Die Kef Lakhal-Amphibolite wurden durch Olivin-dominierte fraktionierte Kristallisation aus Schmelzen gebildet, die durch partielle Aufschmelzung einer homogenen Quelle entstanden sind und MORB-Charakteristik haben. Die Amphibolit-Linsen gehen auch auf Olivin-dominierte Fraktionierungs-Prozesse zurück, hatten aber eine weniger homogene Quelle und zeigen Inselbogen-Charakteristika. Die assoziierten Olivin-reichen Linsen sind Lherzolit-Harzburgit Mantel-Residua, die von bis zu 35% Aufschmelzung betroffen waren. Obwohl zu berücksichtigen ist, daß isotopengeologische und strukturelle Daten fehlen, zeigen die Ergebnisse, daß fraktionierte Kristallisation von Schmelzen, die durch „Non-Modell Aufschmelzung” der Residua entstanden sind, nicht die Zusammensetzung der Amphibolite reproduzieren können. Hingegen liefert Fraktionierung von Schmelzen, die denen des RondaPeridotits ähnlich sind, Zusammensetzungen, die denen der Edough Amphibolite ähnlich sind.
    Notes: Summary The conditions of metamorphism and petrogenesis of Kef Lakhal amphibolites and associated amphibolite and olivine-rich lenses are discussed. The Kef Lakhal amphibolites contain plagioclase ranging from An85 and An12 and Ca-poor normally zoned garnet (〈 9 wt% CaO) and were last metamorphosed to upper amphibolite facies. The amphibolite lenses invariably contain calcic plagioclase (An97-78) and Ca-rich (up to 14 wt% CaO) doubly zoned garnets. Based on garnet zoning, it is found that the lenses experienced the three metamorphisms recorded elsewhere in the massif whereas the main amphibolites suffered only the last two metamorphisms, the last of which reached conditions of about T= 700 ± 80 °C and P= 8–10 Kb. This agrees with two unrelated igneous suites and is supported by the chemistry of the rocks and quantitative modelling. The Kef Lakhal amphibolites were formed by olivine-dominated fractional crystallisation processes from melts derived by partial melting of a homogeneous source and preserve MORB affinities. The amphibolite lenses were also evolved by fractional processes dominated by olivine but from a less homogeneous source and have island arc characteristics. The associated olivine-rich lenses are lherzolite-harzburgite mantle residua which suffered up to 35% melting. Bearing in mind the lack of isotopic and structural information, the data presented in this study indicate that fractional crystallisation of liquids produced through non model melting of these residua does not reproduce the composition of either of the amphibolites. Fractionation of melts similar to those derived from the Ronda peridotites yield compositions similar to the Edough amphibolites.

    Notes: Summary The miscibility of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) with poly(styrene-co-acrylic acid) (SAA) or poly(styrene-co-methacrylic acid) (SMA) containing respectively up to 22 mol % of acrylic or methacrylic acid was studied by Differential Scanning Calorimetry and viscosimetry. All PPO/SAA or PPO/SMA blends containing 60% or less by weight of PPO were miscible and showed only one glass transition temperature (Tg). Above 60% of PPO, two Tg's were however observed for the blends in which the acid content in the SAA or SMA reaches 20% or 12% by mole respectively; the higher Tg is slightly lower than the one of pure PPO, while the lower one corresponds to a miscible blend of lower content of PPO.A DSC study showed that depending on the blend ratio, two or three glass transition temperatures were observed when a copolymer of ethyl methacrylate containing 8 mol % of 4-vinylpyridine (EM4VP-8) was added to miscible PPO/SMA-12 blends. The PPO dissolution in the SMA-12 copolymer was affected by the specific interactions that occurred between this latter copolymer and the EM4VP-8.

    Notes: Abstract Heat Transfer characteristics of pulsated turbulent pipe flow under different conditions of pulsation frequency, amplitude and Reynolds number were experimentally investigated. The pipe wall was kept at uniform heat flux. Reynolds number was varied from 5000 to 29 000 while frequency of pulsation ranged from 1 to 8 Hz. The results show an enhancement in the local Nusselt number at the entrance region. The rate of enhancement decreased as Re increased. Reduction of heat transfer coefficient was observed at higher frequencies and the effect of pulsation is found to be significant at high Reynolds number. It can be concluded that the effect of pulsation on the mean Nusselt numbers is insignificant at low values of Reynolds number.

    Notes: Abstract The separation and preconcentration of vanadium (IV) and vanadium (V) using Sephadex DEAE A-25 with Eriochrome Cyanine R has been studied, based on the preconcentration of vanadium (IV) in the first step and V(V) after reduction with ascorbic acid in the second step. Factors affecting the optimum fixation of the complex were investigated. The absorbance of the solid phase is measured directly at 563 nm for V(IV), at 585 nm for V(V) and at 750 nm for both. The proposed method provides a simple and specific procedure for the separation of vanadium in natural waters. The calibration graph is linear up to 150 ng/mL, with RSD of 4.7% for V(IV) and 4.0% for V(V). The detection limits are 1.6 and 1.4 ng/mL for V(IV) and V(V), respectively.

    Notes: Abstract Empirical correlation has been developed for local and average Nusselt numbers in the thermal entrance region of steady and pulsating turbulent air-flows in a pipe. The correlation was based on experimental data obtained from experiment carried out on a pipe heated under uniform heat flux conditions. The rate of flow was periodically varied at frequencies ranging from 1 Hz to 13 Hz while the average Reynolds number varied from 6400 to 42000.

    Notes: Abstract Soybean (Glycine max. Merrill. cv. Fayette) cotyledonary nodes were transformed with bean pod mottle virus (BPMV) coat protein precursor (CP-P) gene via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The transformation rate was low, and only five primary transformants derived from five different cotyledons were obtained from 400 original cotyledons. Southern blot hybridization verified the integration of the BPMV CP-P gene. Inheritance and expression of this gene in R1 plants were also demonstrated. About 30% of R2 plants derived from one transgenic line showed complete resistance to BPMV infection, as assessed by symptomatology and ELISA, suggesting that homozygous, but not hemizygous, plants exhibit the resistant phenotype.
