Notes: Abstract Demands for health care reform will increase service utilization, much of which will fall on a system of expanded primary care providers, many of whom will not be specialists in psychiatry. These providers will need tools to augment their decision-making process. In this paper, we explore the use of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in three different field sites to predict inpatient psychiatric Length-Of-Stay (LOS). This study describes the development and implementation of a runtime system in three different psychiatric facilities. Data was collected at these respective sites using the runtime system, and then this data was used to retrain the networks to determine if site-specific data would improve accuracy of prediction of LOS. The results indicate that ANNs trained with state hospital data could accurately predict LOS in two different community hospital psychiatric units. When the respective ANNs were retrained with approximately 10% new data from these specific hospitals, rates of improvement ranged from 3% to 15%. Our findings demonstrate that an ANN can adapt to different treatment settings and, when retrained, significantly improve prediction of LOS. Prediction rates by the ANN after retraining are comparable to results of a clinical team.

Notes: My first call was from a well-known University in the Northeast. The chemistry faculty there had decided that it was time to take a hard look at their curriculum, which had been in place for many many years, and examine the content and appropriateness of specific courses. Would I be willing to consider these questions and offer some advice? That was certainly an intriguing request, especially after having been involved with some novel ideas for a chemistry program at my own school, and so I accepted the challenge. I was soon the recipient of an armful of catalogs, course descriptions, and departmental statistics. The visit followed what was to become a familiar pattern. Time was spent on the afternoon place flight refreshing my memory on several specific items. The Chair of the Cheistry department met me at the airport. At that point I was more than happy to have brought along the overcoat I never use in.

Notes: Abstract  The Drosophila genes eyeless, eyes absent, sine oculis, and dachshund cooperate as key regulators of retinal cell-fate determination. Homologues of eyeless (Pax6), eyes absent (Eya1-2), and sine oculis (Six3) have been identified and are expressed in the developing vertebrate eye. We have cloned and characterized the structure and expression of mouse Dach, a homologue of Drosophila dachshund. Sequence analysis reveals the presence of two motifs, DD1 and DD2, which may be involved in the function of Dach/Dachshund as gene regulatory factors. In addition, DD1 shares sequence similarity to N-terminal sequences of Ski and SnoN, which are involved in cellular transformation and differentiation. Mouse and human Dach/DACH were localized to chromosome 14E1 and 13q21.3–22, respectively, by fluorescence in situ hybridization. Finally, in situ hybridization analysis demonstrated that Dach is expressed in similar tissues to those observed in Drosophila, including the embryonic nervous system, sensory organs, and limbs. The finding of Dach expression in the eye completes the list of vertebrate homologues of eyeless, eyes absent, sine oculis, and dachshund which as a group may function to control cell-fate determination in the vertebrate eye.

Notes: Abstract. We show that the region lit by a point light source inside a simple n -gon after at most k reflections off the boundary has combinatorial complexity O(n 2k ) , for any k≥ 1 . A lower bound of Ω ((n/k-Θ(1)) 2k ) is also established which matches the upper bound for any fixed k . A simple near-optimal algorithm for computing the illuminated region is presented, which runs in O(n 2k log n) time and O(n 2k ) space for k〉1 , and in O(n 2 log 2 n) time and O(n 2 ) space for k=1 .

Notes: Summary Standard laboratory posted-offer markets respond slowly and incompletely to demand shocks. In these one-sided markets, where sellers control the setting of prices, very little information is transmitted via the process of exchange. For this reason, traders have trouble distinguishing randomness in their own experience from changes in market fundamentals. This paper reports the results of twelve laboratory markets conducted to assess whether some common variants to standard posted-offer rules can correct the adjustment deficiences. Although discounting, multiple postings and excess demand information all improve performance, we find that response remains poor, and efficiencies low.

Notes: Abstract. We extend the concept of the polygon visible from a source point S in a simple polygon by considering visibility with two types of reflection, specular and diffuse. In specular reflection a light ray reflects from an edge of the polygon according to the rule: the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection. In diffuse reflection a light ray reflects from an edge of the polygon in all inward directions. Several geometric and combinatorial properties of visibility polygons under these two types of reflection are described, when at most one reflection is permitted. We show that the visibility polygon Vs(S) under specular reflection may be nonsimple, while the visibility polygon Vd(S) under diffuse reflection is always simple. We present a Θ(n 2 ) worst-case bound on the combinatorial complexity of both Vs(S) and Vd(S) and describe simple O(n 2 log 2 n) time algorithms for constructing the sets.

Notes: Abstract The focus of this research was to determine if abandoned mines constitute a major environmental hazard in the Black Hills. Many abandoned gold mines in the Black Hills contribute acid and heavy metals to streams. In some areas of sulfide mineralization local impacts are severe, but in most areas the impacts are small because most ore deposits consist of small quartz veins with few sulfides. Pegmatite mines appear to have negligible effects on water due to the insoluble nature of pegmatite minerals. Uranium mines in the southern Black Hills contribute some radioactivity to surface water, but the impact is limited because of the dry climate and lack of runoff in that area.

Notes: Abstract  Fluid exchange between surficial waters and groundwater in karst environments, and the processes that control exchange, are of critical concern to water management districts and planners. High-resolution seismic data were collected from 30 lakes of north-central Florida. In each case study, lake structure and geomorphology were controlled by solution and/or mechanical processes. Processes that control lake development are twofold: (1) karstification or dissolution of the underlying limestone, and (2) the collapse, subsidence, or slumping of overburden to form sinkholes. Initial lake formation is directly related to the karst topography of the underlying host limestone. Case studies have shown that lakes can be divided by geomorphic types into progressive developmental phases: (1) active subsidence or collapse phase (young); (2) transitional phase (middle age); (3) baselevel phase (mature); and (4) polje (drowned prairie) – broad flat-bottom that have one or all phases of sinkhole. Using these criteria, Florida lakes can be classified by size, fill, subsurface features, and geomorphology.
