    Notes: Abstract A variety of stimuli, including cytokines and adhesion to surfaces and matrix proteins, can regulate macrophage function, in part through changes in Ca2+-dependent second messengers. While fluctuation in in-tracellular Ca2+ is an important modulator of cellular activation, little attention has been paid to the roles of other ions whose cytoplasmic concentrations can be rapidly regulated by ion channels. To examine the role of ion channels in macrophage function, we undertook patch clamp studies of human culture-derived macrophages grown under serum-free conditions. The major ionic current in these cells was carried by an outwardly rectifying K+ channel, which had a single-channel conductance of 229 pS in symmetrical K+-rich solution and macroscopic whole-cell conductance of 9.8 nS. These channels opened infrequently in resting cells but were activated immediately by (i) adhesion of mobile cells onto a substrate, (ii) stretch applied to isolated membrane patches in Ca2+-free buffers, (iii) intracellular Ca2+ (EC50 of 0.4 μm), and (iv) the cytokine IL-2. Furthermore, barium and 4-aminopyridine, blockers of this channel, altered the organization and structure of the cytoskeletal proteins actin, tubulin and vimentin. These cytoskeletal changes were associated with reversible alteration to the morphology of the cells. Thus, we have identified an outwardly rectifying K+ channel that appeared to be involved in cytokine and adherence-mediated macrophage activation, and in the maintenance of cytoskeletal integrity and cell shape.

    Notes: Abstract Eupolymnia nebulosa (Montagu) is a widely distributed terebellid polychaete that builds its tubes on the coastal shelf in areas with mixed soft and hard bottoms. From a long-term survey in the Bay of Banyuls, France (NW Mediterranean), we found an advancement of the timing of the spawning period coincident with a delayed breakdown of the thermocline. We postulate that persistent high temperatures can influence gamete development by stimulating oocyte growth, resulting in earlier spawning. During 1992 and 1993, we used a between-individuals experimental approach to assess the possible effect of temperature on oocyte growth based on: (1) determination of the growing fraction of the oocyte population (i.e. oocyte net growth); (2) identification of differences in oocyte growth-rate among females; (3) comparison of non-significantly different size-distributions of the growing oocyte fraction (net oocyte size-distributions) at the beginning of the experiments with those at the end. No effect of temperature on oocyte growth was detectable at the population level, but a positive individual response to prolonged high temperature was evident. Thus, the lack of a significant response by the population to prolonged high temperature does not imply a lack of individual response. We propose a model of oocyte-growth dynamics based on temperature that incorporates previous observations of extended oogenesis and oocyte growth during periods of both increasing and decreasing temperature and on the scattered pattern of oocyte size-distributions at the onset of spawning.

    Notes: Summary Photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) measurement of GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wires (QWR) located in the active region of a p-i-n junction are reported. The samples are fabricated by molecular-beam epitaxial growth on V-grooved substrates. Good control of the interface, defect density and doping profile have been achieved. Homogeneous current injection into the quantum wires is achieved with efficiencies comparable to current injection into a quantum well control sample. PL with and without an applied voltage across the junction was measured at 86 K and 300 K for different excitation densities. Peaks appearing with an applied voltage correspond to the active-region QWR transitions and are also observed on the EL spectra measured at 120 K and at 300 K. Clear evidence of 1D confinement is observed in both PL and EL spectra. They show a one-dimensional splitting of about 24 meV and a saturation of the ground state at high excitation density. The polarisation of the PL and EL is in good agreement with the expected anisotropy of the 1D matrix elements.

    Notes: Abstract The rate coefficients for the reaction between atomic chlorine and a number of naturally occurring species have been measured at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure using the relative rate technique. The values obtained were (4.0 ± 0.8) × 10-10, (2.1 ± 0.5) × 10-10, (3.2 ± 0.5) × 10-10, and (4.9 ± 0.5) × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, for reactions with isoprene, methyl vinyl ketone, methacrolein and δ3-carene, respectively. The value obtained for isoprene compares favourably with previously reported values. No values have been reported to date for the rate constants of the other reactions.

    Notes: Abstract This paper examines the proposition that public capital spending fosters productivity growth in the private sector using a pooled sample of seven OECD countries over the 1963–1988 period. The results indicate that there is a statistically significant positive relationship between public capital formation and the growth rate of labor productivity. This result is not sensitive to whether there is constant returns to scale to some or all inputs, whether the stochastic formulation of the pooled model is a fixed- or a random-effect specification, whether the model includes an energy variable, or whether the data are expressed in the log-differenced or logarithmic form.

    Notes: Abstract Calli of soybean (Glycine max Merr.) cv. Maple Arrow grew better and accumulated more proline when cultured for 5 d on 70 mM NaCl under darkness than at light. This rapid proline accumulation in salinized soybean calli appeared to play a protective role rather than to be a cause of growth failure. Throughout a 28 d-culture cycle (in control and NaCl-treated calli exposed to light or darkness), we followed the possible relationships between the proline contents and the activities of enzymes of proline biosynthesis [ornithine transaminase; NAD(P)H-pyrroline-5-carboxylate reductase], of proline catabolism [NAD(P) proline dehydrogenase], and of NAD kinase responsible of variations in NADP(H) contents. Enzyme activities of proline metabolism and NAD kinase were clearly light- and NaCl-regulated; nevertheless, relationships between enzyme activities and proline content existed only in calli grown for short-term under darkness and in presence of NaCl. The ornithine transaminase route, which was particularly enhanced in these calli during the first days of salt application, seemed to be involved in the initial proline accumulation in soybean.

    Notes: Abstract After an electrophoretic separation of proteins from Euglena gracilis and dry seeds of Phaseolus vulgaris in native conditions in polyacrylamide gels, gels were incubated in mixtures containing NAD+, Mg-ATP2-, glucose 6-phosphate, G6P dehydrogenase, and either phenazine ethosulfate and 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (PES/MTT) or phenazine methosulfate and nitro blue tetrazolium (PMS/NBT) as coupled redox system for NAD+ kinase activity detection. In the presence of PES/MTT, 4 bands were revealed for E. gracilis, among which two corresponded to NAD+ kinase activity, the other corresponding to a NAD+ reductase activity due to alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH). In the presence of PMS/NBT, only the bands of NAD+ kinase activity were revealed. With Phaseolus vulgaris, 3 bands of ADH were always revealed in both mixtures, and only the use of PMS/NBT allowed the detection of NAD+ kinase as a fourth band. With both materials, NAD+ reductase staining in gels was intensifed in the presence of GTP or ATP and even further with ADP or GDP. The results demonstrate that: 1) the NAD+ kinase and NAD+ reductase are two distinct enzymes; 2) the NAD+ reductase corresponds to ADH.
