    Notes: The scientific study of graphology (handwriting analysis) has had a long history. Many practitioners believe that graphology is a valuable selection aid and use this technique in a selection context, and in some European countries it is quite well thought of. While a few articles have proposed that graphology is a valid and useful selection technique, the overwhelming results of well-controlled empirical studies have been that the technique has not demonstrated acceptable validity. A review of relevant literature regarding both theory and research indicates that, while the procedure may have an intuitive appeal, graphology should not be used in a selection context.

While there is an emphasis on decentralisation of bargaining structures in many countries, there is considerable variance. Similarly, there is a diversity of approaches to both direct and indirect forms of participation. Despite attempts by the European Community to integrate policies on these matters among member countries, external influences such as the globalisation of economies and technologies are leading to diverse outcomes.

    Notes: Abstract While attempting to identify genes and their corresponding antigens that could be used to improve the current methods of diagnosing Chlamydia psittaci infection which causes enzootic abortion in ewes, two candidate clones were isolated from a λgt11 genomic DNA expression library of ovine abortion subtype (strain S26/3) C. psittaci. These clones contained fragments of a gene coding for a group of three chlamydial proteins of approximately 90 kDa which appeared as major immunogens by immunoblotting experiments, indicating their potential as diagnostic or possibly protective antigens. Southern blotting of S26/3 genomic DNA using the two clones as probes identified a family of three or four genes. These represent the first example of protein gene duplication reported in Chlamydia.

    Notes: Abstract Clostridium acetobutylicum P262 had phosphotransferase systems for glucose and lactose, and the lactose system was inducible. When C. acetobutylicum P262 was provided with glucose and lactose, the cultures grew in a diauxic fashion, and glucose was used preferentially. Cells grown on lactose took up thiomethylgalactoside, and retained this non-metabolizable lactose analog for long periods of time. Because glucose inhibited thiomethylgalactoside uptake and caused the efflux of thiomethylgalactoside that had already been taken up, it appeared that C. acetobutylicum P262 had inducer exclusion and inducer expulsion mechanisms similar to those found in lactic acid bacteria.

    Notes: Abstract The β-1,4-endoglucanase of the ruminai bacterium, Prevotella ruminicola B14, hydrolysed carboxymethylcellulose and barley glucan but not xylan or mannan. Endoglucanase activity was present in 88- and 82-kDa proteins, and there was at least a 20-fold variation in endoglucanase activity when P. ruminicola B14 was grown on different sugars. The highest activities were observed with mannose, cellobiose or xylose and little activity was observed with sucrose, arabinose or rhamnose. P. ruminicola B14 also had significant xylanase and mannanase activities, but these activities were present in proteins that had lower molecular masses than the endoglucanase and these proteins did not cross-react with antibody made against the endoglucanase. Mannanase activity has a similar pattern of expression to the endoglucanase, while the xylanase was not induced or repressed by the same sugars or combinations of sugars. The xylanase activity was greatest when xylan was the energy source for growth, but xylose was a very poor inducer of xylanase activity.

    Exopolysaccharide Production from Lactic Acid Bacteria Isolated from Fermented Foods (1997)

    Notes: Isolates of lactic acid bacteria were obtained from non-dairy fermented foods (Mettwurst salami, Prosciutto ham and black olives). Their species were identified and they were investigated for their ability to produce exopolysaccharides. A reference yoghurt culture (Streptococcus thermophilus) and an exopolysaccharide producing isolate (Leuconostoc mesenteroides - Isolate 3) were grown in mESM broth under aerobic conditions at 25°C. They produced up to 600 mg/L and 530 mg/L of exopolysaccharide, respectively. Viscosities of the final fermentation broths were much higher in comparison to the isolated exopolysaccharide solutions. The addition of whey protein concentrate (0.2% w/v) to the extracted exopolysaccharides slightly increased the viscosity of the solutions.

    Notes: The influence that a range of polysaccharides (galactomannans) had on ice recrystallization was determined. The concentration dependence of the recrystallization inhibition occurring with locust bean and guar gums was determined. The degree of galactose substitution in a range of enzyme modified guars was dominant in the effect of a galactomannan to inhibit recrystallization. The fine structure of the substituents were less important. Where the galactose content of comparable polysaccharides was similar the fine structure became dominant. The influence of sugar size on recrystallization was also investigated. Increasing molecular weight resulted in reduced recrystallization rates. The observed rates appeared to follow Williams -Landell-Ferry kinetics.

    Notes: Closed-form expressions for quantifying the unsaturated soil hydraulic properties are widely used in computer programs to model subsurface flow and transport in porous media and to investigate indirect methods for estimating these properties. For example, water retention data, which relate soil-water pressure head (h) and effective water saturation (Se), are frequently used to predict the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity (K). However, the suitability of different functions to describe unsaturated hydraulic data has rarely been investigated comprehensively. We attempted to fit 14 retention and 11 conductivity functions to 903 sets of water retention and hydraulic conductivity data measured on soil and rock samples or horizons reported in the unsaturated hydraulic database UNSODA. Some of the best mean values for r2 and MSE for fitting Se(h) data were obtained with the retention functions reported by van Genuchten (1980), Globus (1987), and Hutson and Cass (1987). A function reported by Gardner (1958) could describe K (h) data quite well whereas functions reported by Brooks and Corey (1964) and van Genuchten (1980), which are respectively based on the conductivity models by Burdine and Mualem, yielded a relatively good description of K(SC) data.
