    Notizen: Abstract. Mubangwe Farm, northern Malawi, was brought into cultivation from savanna vegetation with Brachystegia between 1970 and 1983 to produce tobacco, maize and groundnuts. Because of poor yields even with inputs of lime, N, P and K the fields were soon abandoned. The soils were only moderately acidic with little likelihood of Al toxicity. They held only small amounts of exchangeable Ca2+ (down to 0.01 cmolc/kg) particularly at depth. Phosphorus availability was low particularly in the subsoil. A minus-one pot experiment showed that the growth of sorghum in topsoil samples was limited by lack of N, P, S and Ca. The lower availabilities of P and Ca in the subsoil are therefore likely to be major limitations to growth, allowing only limited root penetration. The loamy sand to sandy clay soils generally had small available water capacities (down to 0.07 cm3/cm3) which, with restricted root development, may have lead to drought in dry periods during the growing season. The findings emphasize the need to measure both subsoil and topsoil properties when new areas of land are being developed for crop production.

    Notizen: Abstract. Kriging is used to provide detailed quantitative information for a range of soil characteristics across the floodplain of the River Gambia. Application of spatial statistics to a large area with a coarse grid of data points produces spurious patterns unless the area is first partitioned into soil-geomorphic mapping units, each of which has a unique pattern of spatial variation. Even combining classical soil survey method with spatial statistics, the large short-range variability of acid sulphate soils means that single factor maps conceal a large element of uncertainty. A more robust procedure is to map the probability of occurrence of critical values of key characteristics.

    Notizen: Abstract. Ten chalk topsoils (0-25 cm) were repacked into columns in the laboratory. After leaching similar to one year's throughflow in the field, loss of K was equivalent to between 9 and 74kg K/ha. This represented between 3 and 30% of the initial exchangeable K with which loss was poorly correlated. Loss was dependant on the soil solution concentration and was inversely proportional to potassium buffer power.The loss of magnesium in the same columns was between 10 and 22 kg Mg/ha (6-21% of the initial exchangeable Mg). Magnesium loss was poorly correlated with exchangeable Mg.When KCl fertilizer was incorporated into the soils, the increase in leaching of potassium was 1–35% of the K addition. Application to the top of the column resulted in less leaching than when the K was incorporated. Leaching of magnesium was increased by up to 5 kg Mg/ha.Potassium leaching may be delayed by the underlying A/C horizon but pure chalk, with an extremely low buffer power for K, has little ability to retain K. Extremely calcareous topsoils were the most leaky although in practice it is the organic chalk soils on which it is most difficult to attain adequate K levels. On all chalk soils, maintenance of a high K level with K fertilizer is likely to cause unnecessary long-term leaching losses. Annual, rather than biennial, fertilizer applications are to be preferred.

    Notizen: Isolates of Rhizoctonia collected from the stems, roots, tuber sclerotia and soil of potato crops in Virginia and Lenswood, South Australia, were identified to anastomosis groups (AG). Of the 301 multinucleate isolates of Rhizoctonia solani tested, 90% were AG-3, 7% were AG-4 and 2% were AG-5; 12 isolates were binucleate Rhizoctonia spp. This is the first report of isolates of AG-4 and AG-5 causing disease in potato crops in South Australia. All AG-3, AG-4 and AG-5 isolates tested caused rhizoctonia disease symptoms on the potato cultivar Coliban in pathogenicity trials conducted under glasshotise conditions. Both AG-3 and AG-5 isolates caused black scurf and stem cankers, although symptoms of black scurf were less severe with AG-5. AG-4 isolates produced the most severe stem and stolon cankers of all isolates tested. The pathogenicity of tuber-borne inoculum was confirmed by growing plants from sclerotia-infested tubers. AG-8 isolates from diseased barley and wheat produced severe root cankers and caused loss of feeder roots on inoculated potato plants. Results suggest that rhizoctonia disease in potato fields in South Australia is caused by a combination of different anastomosis groups and this has important implications for crop rotations.

    Notizen: The effects of temperature on the development of light leaf spot (Pyrenopeziza brassicae) on winter oilseed rape were investigated in controlled-environment experiments. The proportion of conidia which germinated on leaves, the growth rate of germ tubes, the severity of light leaf spot and the production of conidia increased with increasing temperature from 5 to 15 C. The time to 50% germination of conidia and the incubation and latent periods of light leaf spot lesions decreased when temperature increased from 5 to 15°C. At 20°C, however, light leaf spot severity and production of conidia were less and the incubation and latent periods were longer than at 15 C. There were differences between P brassicae isolates and oilseed rape cultivars in the severity of light leaf spot, the production of conidia and the length of the incubation period but not in the length of the latent period. The responses to temperature for lesion severity and incubation and latent periods appeared to be approximately linear over the temperature range 5-15°C and could be quantified using linear regression analysis.

    Notizen: The effect of temperature on the release, survival, encystment and infectivity of Spongospora subterranea f.sp. nasturtii zoospores released from diseased watercress roots was studied. There was rapid, synchronized release of zoospores at 20°C followed by a steep decline in zoospore numbers. A similar trend occurred at 10° C and 15° C, although fewer zoospores were released and the subsequent decline was more gradual. In contrast, at 5°C very low numbers of zoospores were released over the first 5 days. Subsequently, zoospore release increased rapidly over the following 3 days and zoospore numbers were maintained at relatively high levels for a further 6 days. This duration of high zoospore numbers at 5°C was due to prolonged survival rather than continual release. When a uniform zoospore suspension released at IOC was transferred to 20·C zoospore numbers were found to decline rapidly over 6 days; the decline was less rapid at 15° C and IOC, taking 9 and 15 days, respectively. At 5°C zoospore numbers decreased slowly. Few zoospores encysted on roots at 20° C but increased numbers were found at 15°C and 10°C. There were significantly more diseased roots at 10° C than at 5,15 or 20° C. The lowest number of diseased roots was found at 20° C. The correlation between increased seventy of the disease in the field during the winter months and the effect of temperature on zoospores of S. subterranea f.sp. nasturtii is discussed.

    Notizen: Groundnut leaves, naturally infected in the field with Cercospora arachidicola or artificially infected in the greenhouse with C. arachidicola or Puccinia arachidis, accumulated isoflavonoid phytoalexins. Major compounds included medicarpin, formononetin, demethylmedicarpin, three isoflavanones and the isoflavone, daidzein. In both greenhouse and field experiments cv. Egret was less susceptible than cv. P84/5/244 to both pathogens, and accumulated phytoalexin (medicarpin) concentrations which were up to three times greater. Higher concentrations and greater variation of phytoalexins were detected when both cultivars were infected with C. arachidicola than when they were infected with P. arachidis.

    Notizen: We present prediction models for estimating tree mortality resulting from gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar, defoliation in mixed oak, Quercus sp., forests. These models differ from previous work by including defoliation as a factor in the analysis. Defoliation intensity, initial tree crown condition (crown vigour), crown position, and species grouping classes were highly significant in categorical analysis of variance for mortality. Heavy defoliation intensity was shown to have a strong, consistent influence in increasing the probability of tree mortality. Classification and Regression Tree (CART) analysis, a binomial decision tree procedure, was used to develop prediction models of mortality risk for use by forest managers. The best decision tree had 65 groups that correctly classified 75% of the live trees and 76% of the dead trees. Models were run separately by defoliation class and provided correct classifications between 63 and 78% of the trees. Forest land managers can use these models to assign probabilities of death for moderate and heavy defoliation intensity levels and compare predicted mortality to mortality of undefoliated trees to determine how gypsy moth defoliation will affect their stands. The probabilities can be used to develop marking guides Lased on projected defoliation levels for implementing silvicultural treatments to minimize gypsy moth effects in forest stands prior to infestation.

    Notizen: : The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed a sample survey design to answer questions about the ecological condition and trends in condition of U.S. ecological resources. To meet the objectives, the design relies on a probability sample of the resource population of interest (e.g., a random sample of lakes) each year on which measurements are made during an index period. Natural spatial and temporal variability and variability in the sampling process all affect the ability to describe the status of a population and the sensitivity for trend detection. We describe the important components of variance and estimate their magnitude for indicators of trophic condition of lakes to illustrate the process. We also describe models for trend detection and use them to demonstrate the sensitivity of the proposed design to detect trends. If the variance structure that develops during the probability surveys is like that synthesized from available databases and the literature, then the trends in common indicators of trophic condition of the specified magnitude should be detectable within about a decade for Secchi disk transparency (0.5–1 percentiyear) and total phosphorus (2–3 percent/year), but not for chlorophyll-a (〉 3–4 percent/year), which will take longer.

    Notizen: : South Florida and the Everglades have been under intensive development since 1850 by Federal and State governments who encouraged and financed extensive drainage and hydraulic changes, primarily for agricultural settlement. Agricultural development of the sugar industry in the northern Everglades adjacent to Lake Okeechobee rapidly progressed only after the 1900s. Political and resource management conflicts have arisen because policies which once favored development are now being reversed by policies and regulation efforts to restore and conserve natural ecosystems. Currently, the environmental and ecological impacts of agricultural land use adjacent to natural wtlands of the Everglades are being assessed. The objectives of this paper are: (1) to outline the historical development of south Florida and the sugar industry, (2) to relate this history to political and management policy changes occurring as it pertains to ecosystem restoration and the multiuser competition for water/land resources, and (3) to propose how integrated resource management might be utilized for a sustainable Everglades and south Florida. This paper outlines the historical paradox of urban settlement, land development, and agricultural production, with efforts in the recent decade to acquire, manage, and preserve land and water resources for natural areas conservation. Only though the use of integrated resource management will the defined resource conflicts be mediated.
