In:  Supplement to: Barrera, Enriqueta C; Savin, Samuel M; Thomas, Ellen; Jones, Charles E (1997): Evidence for thermohaline-circulation reversals controlled by sea-level change in the latest Cretaceous. Geology, 25(8), 715-718, https://doi.org/10.1130/0091-7613(1997)025%3C0715:EFTCRC%3E2.3.CO;2

Beschreibung: Fluctuations in oxygen (d18O) and carbon (d13C) isotope values of benthic foraminiferal calcite from the tropical Pacific and Southern Oceans indicate rapid reversals in the dominant mode and direction of the thermohaline circulation during a 1 m.y. interval (71-70 Ma) in the Maastrichtian. At the onset of this change, benthic foraminiferal d18O values increased and were highest in low-latitude Pacific Ocean waters, whereas benthic and planktic foraminiferal d13C values decreased and benthic values were lowest in the Southern Ocean. Subsequently, benthic foraminiferal d18O values in the Indo-Pacific decreased, and benthic and planktic d13C values increased globally. These isotopic patterns suggest that cool intermediate-depth waters, derived from high-latitude regions, penetrated temporarily to the tropics. The low benthic d13C values at the Southern Ocean sites, however, suggest that these cool waters may have been derived from high northern rather than high southern latitudes. Correlation with eustatic sea-level curves suggests that sea-level change was the most likely mechanism to change the circulation and/or source(s) of intermediate-depth waters. We thus propose that oceanic circulation during the latest Cretaceous was vigorous and that competing sources of intermediate- and deep-water formation, linked to changes in climate and sea level, may have alternated in importance.

Notizen: A technique has been developed to determine the absolute single particle counting efficiency of a channel electron multiplier (CEM) for positively charged ions at keV energies. The calibration technique is applicable to positive ion detectors in general. Ion beam currents of C2+ were created by charge transfer of C3+ on H2 in the thin target regime. By adjusting the H2 pressure in the beam scattering chamber from 10−10 to 10−6 Torr, C2+ currents could be created either low enough to be detected by the CEM in the particle counting mode or high enough to be measured as a current using the CEM as a Faraday cup. The CEM counting efficiency was determined by comparing the C2+ count rate to the C2+ current, scaling by the change in H2 pressure, and also scaling by the incident C3+ current for each C2+ measurement. This method, which effectively uses the charge transfer cross section as a "transfer standard,'' allows the CEM counting efficiency to be determined in situ and to be monitored accurately over extended periods of time. The calibration requires that only the relative, not the absolute, pressure change be known. The technique does not require the value of the charge transfer cross section to be known. The accuracy of the calibration technique for the present results was 10% at a confidence level considered to be equivalent to a statistical 90% confidence level. For the present work, the peak counting efficiency of a Galileo 4039 CEM for 32.5 keV C2+ ions was determined to be 96%. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A status overview of the development of laser ion sources suited to heavy ion synchrotrons is presented. The results of experimental and theoretical studies, recently obtained at a number of laboratories, for laser-produced highly charged heavy ions are summarized for plasmas heated by long wavelength lasers. Design of a powerful repetition rate CO2 laser, target interaction chamber, and extraction system suited for reliable long term operation mode with real accelerators is discussed. Requirements for the final performance of the laser ion sources for ion beam injectors at the ITEP-Moscow and CERN accelerator facilities are given. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: The effects of pore size distribution in porous glasses on the photoluminescence of nanosized Si clusters and of the humidity on the sample dimensions have been investigated. Increase of the pore size brings about the blueshift of the emission peak. In the spectra, geminate and distant components of the emission have been resolved. The humidity influences the dimensions of the samples due to the competing of chemical bonding forces and capillary forces. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Experimental evidence for infrared quenched photoinduced persistent conductivity in oxygen deficient YBa2Cu3O6+x films is presented. Results are interpreted in terms of both a charge transfer model, in which photogenerated electrons are trapped in oxygen vacancy defects, and a photoassisted oxygen ordering model. Infrared illumination of the photoinduced state results in detrapping of electrons, a recombination of photogenerated holes/electrons, and a partial quenching of the photoinduced state. Experimental results suggest the possibility of optically controlled superconducting devices in which the superconducting state is generated and quenched with different colors of light. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: Luminescent films of porous silicon were obtained by laser ablation of crystalline silicon. The spectral and temporal characteristics of light emission from laser ablated porous silicon (LAPS) films critically depend on the chemical composition of the atmosphere in which they were fabricated. Luminescent characteristics, spatial structure, and chemical composition of LAPS were compared with the properties of porous silicon obtained by a standard electrochemical method on the same silicon substrate. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.
