    Notes: Abstract Fluid inclusions were studied in samples from the Ashanti, Konongo-Southern Cross, Prestea, Abosso/Damang and Ayanfuri gold deposits in the Ashanti Belt, Ghana. Primary fluid inclusions in quartz from mineralised veins of the Ashanti, Prestea, Konongo-Southern Cross, and Abosso/Damang deposits contain almost exclusively volatile species. The primary setting of the gaseous (i.e. the fluid components CO2, CH4 and N2) fluid inclusions in clusters and intragranular trails suggests that they represent the mineralising fluids. Microthermometric and Raman spectroscopic analyses of the inclusions revealed a CO2 dominated fluid with variable contents of N2 and traces of CH4. Water content of most inclusions is below the detection limits of the respective methods used. Aqueous inclusions are rare in all samples with the exception of those from the granite-hosted Ayanfuri mineralisation. Here inclusions associated with the gold mineralisation contain a low salinity (〈6 eq.wt.% NaCl) aqueous solution with variable quantities of CO2. Microthermometric investigations revealed densities of the gaseous inclusions of 0.65 to 1.06 g/cm3 at Ashanti, 0.85 to 0.98 g/cm3 at Prestea, up to 1.02 g/cm3 at Konongo-Southern Cross, and 0.8 to 1.0 g/cm3 at Abosso/Damang. The fluid inclusion data are used to outline the PT ranges of gold mineralisation of the respective gold deposits. The high density gaseous inclusions found in the auriferous quartz at Ashanti and Prestea imply rather high pressure trapping conditions of up to 5.4 kbar. In contrast, mineralisation at Ayanfuri and Abosso/Damang is inferred to have occurred at lower pressures of only up to 2.2 kbar. Mesothermal gold mineralisation is generally regarded to have formed from fluids characterized by H2O 〉 CO2 and low salinity ( ±  6 eq.wt.%NaCl). However, fluid inclusions in quartz from the gold mineralisations in the Ashanti belt point to distinctly different fluid compositions. Specifically, the predominance of CO2 and CO2 〉〉 H2O have to be emphasized. Fluid systems with this unique bulk composition were apparently active over more than 200␣km along strike of the Ashanti belt. Fluids rich in CO2 may present a hitherto unrecognised new category of ore-forming fluids.

    Notes: Summary After rapid intravenous injection of furosemide 40 mg (Fu), plasma levels were determined in 7 healthy volunteers, 8 patients with liver cirrhosis with ascites and 7 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The diuretic response was evaluated by measuring the urinary excretion of sodium and potassium and the urine volume. The mean elimination half life (tF1/2+) of Fu averaged 51±7.7 (±SD) min in healthy subjects, 52±7.7 min in cirrhosis and 200±57 min in ESRD. The non-renal clearance (Clnr) in healthy subjects (56±28 ml/min) corresponds to the total plasma clearance in functionally anephric patients (54±18 ml/min). In cirrhosis there was no significant change in the disposition parameters of Fu in comparison to the healthy volunteers, but there was a significant reduction in urine sodium and volume, whereas potassium excretion remained unchanged. Fu “excretion rate — response” curves showed diminished tubular sensitivity to Fu in cirrhosis.

    Notes: 1. Data on the distributions of pelagic and benthic Chaoborus flavicans larvae were gathered in 1994 and tested for their agreement with the predator avoidance hypotheses. The development of all Chaoborus life stages, as well as the horizontal and vertical distribution in the four larval instars, was followed from May until October. We expected the largest larvae to dwell deeper by day, thus avoiding predation by visually foraging fish.2. In agreement with this prediction body size increased with daytime depth, and this was true both between and within instars. The migration amplitude consequently increased with larval instar.3. There was also evidence for horizontal migration, mainly in the third but also in the fourth instar.4. Along a horizontal transect with increasing depth, locations with many benthic larvae had fewer pelagic larvae. Oxygen concentration was a good predictor of maximum benthic larval depth for most of the season but failed to predict their distribution in autumn.

    Notes: 15 N of bulk sediment, organic carbon concentrations, and abundances of exoskeletons of Bosmina longispina maritima in the sediment, the data are used to evaluate significant sources of nitrogen in the food web over the past century. Nitrogen isotopic composition of bulk sediments ranges from 2.5 to 4.5ö, that of exokeletons varies between 0.4 and 6.2ö. The two are positively correlated. A marked increase in the abundance of Bosmina since 1965 (from less than 500 specimen to more than 5000 specimen cm3 of sediment) is correlated with a significant increase in sedimentary organic carbon concentrations (from 4% to more than 10%). The isotopic data do not identify increased land-derived nitrate as the dominant nitrogen source fuelling the increase. Instead, we postulate that nitrogen fixation by diazotrophic bacteria has been one of the larger sources of nitrogen in the Baltic Sea, as it is today.

    Notes: Abstract Mesozooplankton collected during five summer expeditions to the Arctic Ocean between 1987 and 1991 was analysed for regional patterns in biomass and species distribution, distinguishing between an epipelagic (0–100 m) and a deeper (0–500 m) layer. A total of 58 stations was sampled mainly in the Nansen, Amundsen and Makarov Basins of the central Arctic Ocean and in areas of the Greenland Sea, West Spitsbergen Current and Barents Sea. Results from the different expeditions were combined to create a transect extending from the Fram Strait across the Eurasian Basin into the Makarov Basin. Mesozooplankton dry mass in the upper 500 m decreased from 8.4 g m−2 in the West Spitsbergen Current to less than 2 g m−2 in the high-Arctic deep-sea basins. In the central Arctic Ocean, biomass was concentrated in the upper 100 m and was dominated by the large copepods Calanus hyperboreus and C. glacialis. In contrast, the mesozooplankton in the West Spitsbergen Current was more evenly distributed throughout the upper 500 m, with C. finmarchicus as the prevailing species. The distribution of abundant mesopelagic species reflected the hydrographic regime: the calanoid copepod Gaetanus tenuispinus and the hyperiid amphipod Themisto abyssorum were most abundant in the Atlantic inflow, while Scaphocalanus magnus was a typical component of the high-Arctic fauna. The relatively high mesozooplankton biomass and the occurrence of boreal-Atlantic species in the central Arctic Ocean are indicators for the import of organic material from allochthonous sources, especially from the northern North Atlantic. Hence, in spite of its enclosure by land masses, the Arctic Ocean is characterized by an exchange of water masses and organisms with the North Atlantic, and advection processes strongly influence the distribution of plankton species in this high-latitude ecosystem.

Accordingto the generally accepted assumptions on competitionand invertebrate predation, large-bodied cladocerantaxa were expected to be less affected by competingcongeners and by Chaoborus than weresmall-bodied taxa. Effects of the predator upon anassemblage of differently sized cladoceran taxa weremuch more pronounced than effects of competition.There was a tendency of predation and competitionimpact to decrease with cladoceran size, but predationpressure was also low for some small cladocerans andhigh for some large cladocerans. The general trendswere further obscured by factors not or indirectlylinked to body size.

    Notes: Abstract This paper deals with characterizing the bridging mechanisms developed across delamination cracks by through-thickness reinforcement, using stitched carbon/epoxy laminates under mode II loading as a prime example. End Notched Flexure (ENF) tests are performed which show that stitching can provide stable crack growth. The bridging law, which characterizes the bridging action of the stitches, is deduced from both crack profile measurements and load vs. deflection curves. Consistent results are obtained from the two methods. The inferred laws imply that delamination cracks will commonly grow in conditions that are neither accurately nor properly described by linear elastic fracture mechanics. Large scale bridging calculations are required, in which the essential material property is the bridging traction law. The level of detail in which the law must be determined can be inferred from the sensitivity of predicted crack growth to variations in the law. It is recommended that the required parametric traction law be deduced in engineering practice from load vs. deflection data from the standard ENF (or similar) test, with due regard to selecting the notch size and other specimen dimensions to ensure that crack growth is stable in the test.
