Notes: Abstract The effect of the new substituted benzimidazole proton pump inhibitor, lansoprazole, on pharmacokinetics and metabolism of theophylline has been studied in healthy adults given oral lansoprazole 30 mg once daily for 11 days. On Days 4 and 11 of 300 mg aminophylline was simultaneously administered orally and blood samples for theophylline analysis were taken over 24 h. Urine samples were collected for up to 24 h and were assayed for theophylline and its major metabolites 1,3-dimethyluric acid (1,3-DMU), 1-methyluric acid (1-MU) and 3-methylxanthine (3-MX). The pharmacokinetic parameters of theophylline were determined, and the urinary recovery of unchanged theophylline and its major metabolites were calculated. After administration of lansoprazole for 4 days, no significant alteration in the terminal elimination half-life (t 1/2β) or the mean residence time (MRT) was detected. However, there was a significant decrease of about 13% in the area under the plasma concentration-time curve (AUC) and a significant increase of about 19% in the apparent clearance (CLapp). Lansoprazole treatment for 11 days caused a significant decrease of approximately 12% in t 1/2β and about 10% in the MRT of theophylline, although neither AUC nor CLapp showed a significant alteration. The excretion of 3-MX in the urine was significantly increased by about 20% after lansoprazole treatment for 4 and 11 days, although there was no significant alteration in the excretion of unchanged theophylline, 1,3-DMU or 1-MU. The results indicate that repeated administration of lansoprazole to humans induces the hepatic microsomal P-450-dependent drug oxidation system that mediates N-1-demethylation of theophylline, consequently increasing its metabolism.

Notes: We reveal the intrinsic Josephson effect in a La2−xSrxCuO4 (LSCO) high-Tc superconductor. Nb counterelectrodes are deposited on top of mesas, which are formed on surfaces either parallel or perpendicular to the ab plane of LSCO single crystals. Nb/LSCO interfaces behave as SNS Josephson junctions. For the junctions parallel to the ab plane, we observe many branches in the current–voltage characteristics due to intrinsic Josephson effects. The voltage gaps between the branches are typically 0.1 mV, which is much smaller than the superconducting energy gap 2Δ≅11 mV expected for LSCO from Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer theory. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magneto-optical Kerr spectra of ultrathin Co films grown on Cu(001) surfaces have been measured in situ. The growth mode and the crystal structure have been investigating by reflection high-energy electron diffraction observation. A 20-A(ring)-thick fcc Co grown on Cu(001) had a lateral lattice constant of 3.59±0.01 A(ring), which was about 1.4% expanded compared with that of the bulk fcc Co. There was a remarkable difference above 4 eV in ωσyz spectra between 20- and 1000-A(ring)-thick films. ωσyz spectra for 20-A(ring)-thick Co film showed a resonance-type structure at around 5 eV. It is considered that the structure is caused by the lower energy shift of the 1→6 interband transitions due to the narrowing of the 3d bands. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A total of 31 antibody-secreting hybridoma cells against the yellowtail ascites virus (YAV) were established. These monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) reacted with the cytoplasm of YAV-infected CHSE-214 cells, but not with uninfected CHSE-214 cells in an immunofluorescence test. Using these MAbs, two classes of polypeptides (VP2 and VP3) were characterized by immunoprecipitation followed by SDS-PAGE, although one MAb did not react with either polypeptide. Fifteen out of the 17 MAbs that were reactive with VP2 polypeptides neutralized virus infectivity, but all 13 MAbs that were reactive with VP3 did not neutralize infectivity. In the immunofluorescence test, 29 out of the 31 MAbs obtained showed the same reaction pattern to 12 YAV isolates from yellowtail, Seriola quinqueradiata, goldstriped amberjack, Seriola aureovittata, and threeline grunt, Parapristipoma trilineatum, from different geographical regions. The remaining two MAbs showed slightly different reaction patterns to the YAV isolates. The reaction patterns of the MAbs to the VR-299, Sp and Ab strains of IPNV were also investigated. Fourteen MAbs reacted to all three IPNV strains. The other 17 MAbs showed a negative reaction with at least one strain.

Notes: Variation was investigated in 110 doubled haploid (DH) lines of wheat derived from wheat × maize crosses. Field observation revealed visible variations in 15 DH2 lines such as extreme dwarfism, low seed fertility, alteration of spike type and stripes. Six agronomic traits, i.e., heading date, spike number/ plant, culm length, spike length, seed fertility and grain weight were statistically analyzed in the DH2 and DH3 generations. Out of the 88 DH2 lines/DH3 groups, 26 %/64 % showed significant differences from the parental variety in the means of one or more traits. Ranges of the DH3 lines were larger than those of the DH2 lines, except for spike number/plant. Furthermore, analyses of variance within and between DH lines showed the presence of heterogeneity/heterozygosity in the DH2 lines/plants. These results indicated the occurrence of gametoclonal variation in the DH lines. It is considered that most of the variations detected were due to the colchicine treatment rather than to the 2,4-D treatment or in vitro culture.

Notes: We have studied low frequency (1/f) noise of YBa2Cu3O7−δ dc superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) on SrTiO3 bicrystal substrates. 1/f flux noise, either measured at different temperatures for optimized bias current or measured at 77 K for different bias currents, is almost constant. These facts imply that 1/f noise mainly comes from fluctuations of the critical current of the Josephson junction that form the SQUID. Also, we explain the critical current fluctuations in the junction by an equilibrium temperature fluctuation model.

Notes: The structural relaxation in (Ni,Fe)75Si10B15 metallic glasses has been studied by measuring resistivity changes and Mössbauer spectra. The sign and magnitude of resistivity changes due to the relaxation depend strongly on the Ni/Fe ratio. The isothermal resistivity changes fit well the nonlinear kinetic form, indicating that the fluctuation of local environments of Ni and Fe atoms is very large and Ni and Fe atoms in Ni-Fe-Si-B metallic glasses are mobile compared with Co and Fe atoms in Co-Fe-Si-B metallic glasses. The compositional dependence and kinetic parameters for reversible resistivity changes and Mössbauer spectra strongly support that the reversible structural relaxation corresponds to the reversible short-range ordering between Ni and Fe atoms.

Notes: We studied nonradiative recombination centers in undoped (AlxGa1−x)0.5In0.5Pgrown by metalorganic vapor phase epitaxy using transient capacitance spectroscopy. We found three deep energy levels, including a mid-gap level. We drew an equation to get a capture cross section for minority carriers, and obtained it using isothermal capacitance transient spectroscopy measurement. The mid-gap level had an electron capture cross section of 2 × 10−10 cm2 and a hole capture cross section of 1 × 10−15 cm2. The time constant of nonradiative recombination through the mid-gap level was found to be comparable to that of radiative recombination. We concluded that the mid-gap level is an effective nonradiative recombination center that reduces photoluminescence intensity.
