Notes: The Sierra Nevada core, located in the Betic hinterland, features a N-S large-scale open antiform with a central relatively uplifted highly extended domain placed between two less extended domains (in the east and in the west) dipping eastwards and westwards, respectively. The core-bounding detachment system formed during the Serravallian (15–11 Ma) in an episode of ENE-WSW extension. The ESCI-Beticas 2 deep seismic reflection profile, a transect through the core, shows a highly reflective deep crust overlying a subhorizontal Moho, and a fairly transparent upper crust and upper mantle. The lack of Moho relief beneath this area, with differential values for supra-crustal thinning, suggests a mechanism of intracrustal isostatic compensation. Surface geology data together with seismic imaging indicate intracrustal flow and upward doming as a response to footwall unloading accompanying the middle Miocene supracrustal extension. A prominent mid-crustal reflector (MCR) is deemed to represent a decoupling zone between the upper and the deep crust. Subsequent N-S shortening and associated folding occurred in the late Miocene. The interference pattern of this folding over the middle Miocene core produced the current E–W dome-shaped tectonic windows where the deepest complex of the Betic hinterland crops out.

Notes: Abstract Several 9-(2-R phenyl)xanthenediones have been synthesized and the x-ray diffraction structure for the 2-methylphenyl derivative (4b) has been determined. This compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group P21/n, with a = 11.729 (3), b = 9.674 (3), c = 14.628 (4) Å, and β = 106.30°. It presents a partially hydrogenated xanthene system in distorted boat conformation for the heterocyclic central ring, and an almost ideal envelope conformation for the outer rings. The aromatic substituent at the ninth position is at 84° in angle with the xanthene system.

Notes: Abstract Synkinematic quartz veins are ubiquitous in the shear zone separating the Veleta unit from the Calar Alto unit in the internal part of the Betic Cordilleras. They have been studied with respect to quartz c-axis fabrics, microstructures and fluid inclusions. Veins were probably generated during syn-metamorphic stacking of the units at P = 500 − 600 MPa and T = 400 − 500°C. Quartz displays two groups of microstructures in the shear zone: (1) older coarse-grained mosaics (CGM) resulting from exaggerated grain growth; and (2) younger fine-grained mosaics (FGM) developed at the expense of the former. The fine-grained mosaics show polygonal granoblastic and elongate mosaic microstructures in general, with ribbon microstructures often found near the boundary of the units. Fluids contained in secondary inclusions vary from high salinity brines to different types of CO2—brine mixtures and low density CO2 fluids. Differences in composition and P-T trapping conditions are indicated for the different types of inclusions. Some fluid inclusions are older than the FGM, whereas others are younger, thus constraining the P- T conditions at which the two microstructural events took place. Fluid inclusion evidence suggests conditions of Pfluid 〉 170 MPa and T ≧ 370−430°C for the CGM and Pfluid ≧ 20−80 MPa and T 〉 340°C for the FGM. The quartz c-axis fabrics dealt with here correspond to the second recrystallization event, as little evidence of older fabrics is preserved in the shear zone. C-axis patterns vary across the shear zone from slightly asymmetrical type I crossed girdles in the hanging wall and footwall to more asymmetrical crossed girdles at the boundary of the units. This indicates a correlative increase in the magnitude of the heterogeneous shear strain in the same direction. Most of the deformation is concentrated at the top of the Veleta unit. The sense of movement is top to the west, in agreement with other kinematic markers. The quartz c-axis fabrics resulted from dynamic recrystallization during simple shear. The retrograde P-T path inferred from fluid inclusion analysis, along with other geological and geochronological evidence, indicates that this deformation is coeval with a reduction in the crustal overburden. Geochronological and stratigraphic data show that the proposed Dos Picos extensional detachment, separating the Calar Alto and Veleta units, took place during the early Miocene, synchronous with the intense thinning of the Nevado-Filábride Complex and of the whole continental crust underlying the Alborán Basin.

Notes: Summary Developing cilia and non-ciliated centrioles are both present in the rat choroid cell studied with the electron microscope. The development of the cilium begins with the appearance of a thick-walled vesicle close to the centriole or in contact with it. Very soon this vesicle lines the distal extremity of the centriole. The growing ciliary shaft invaginates the vesicle, forming a temporary ciliary sheath. This sheath isolates the growing cilium from its environment. Degenerating ciliary shafts are by no means rare. They are interpreted as evidence of a biological cycle of the cilia. Club-shaped forms are also frequent. Non-ciliated centrioles are sometimes in contact with striated structures consisting of alternating dark and light bands, separated by a distance of 600 Å. These formations (treillis) are different from the “pericentriolar satellites”. On morphological grounds, they might be considered as centriole precursors.

Notes: The preparation and characterization of five new imidazabole derivatives is reported: 1,5-dibenzyl-4,4,8,8-tetrahydroimidazabole (2), 4,4,8,8-tetrafluoro-1,5-dimethylimidazabole (3), 4,4-difluoro-8,8-dihydro-1,5-dimethylimidazabole (4), 4,4,8,8-tetrachloro-1,5-dimethylimidazabole (5), and 4,4,8,8-tetraethyl-1,5-dimethylimidazabole (6). The structures of compounds 2-6 as dimeric carbene-borane adducts rather than dimeric N-borane adducts are discussed on the basis of NMR (2-6) and X-ray diffraction data (2, 3, 5 and 6).

Notes: Reaction of 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol and aqueous ammonia with boron, aluminum, gallium, or strontium chloride, or with calcium or barium acetate produce, under oxidizing conditions, neutral complexes of stoichiometric formulae ML (M = BCl), ML2, [M = Al (2), Ga (3), Ca (4), and Ba (5)], and ML3H [M = Sr (6)] [L = different oxidation states of bis(3,5-di-tert-butyl-1-hydroxy-2-phenyl)amine]. The structures of 1 and 4-6 were established by 1H- and 13C-NMR spectroscopy and of 2, 3, and 6 by X-ray diffraction. The coordination compound ClBL (1) was obtained by transmetallation of ZnL2 with BCl3. It is a tetracyclic compound with tetracoordinated boron and nitrogen atoms, the ligand being in the reduced form, bis(hydroxyphenyl)amine. The paramagnetic complexes 2 and 3 crystallized in the triclinic system and are hexacoordinated with two orthogonal planar ligands bonded to the metal atoms. The ligands appear in two different oxidation states: one as the monoanion and another as a radical dianion. Based on their X-ray diffraction molecular structures, it is deduced that both ligands have similar structures, confirming electronic delocalization and fast interconversion of their oxidation states. Ca and Ba complexes are diamagnetic and hexacoordinated, both ligands being monoanions The strontium complex crystallized in the monoclinic system, the metal atom is nonacoordinated, having two ligands as monoanions, and a third one is a neutral protonated diquinone. Its structure is a distorted helix with three paddles in a C3 geometry and its unexpected diamagnetic behaviour is due to the presence of a reduced protonated ligand.

Description: Although several studies have analyzed the role that specific corporate governance mechanisms have on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reporting practices, their findings have not been conclusive and the evidence from developing countries is scarce. The theoretical support for this relationship in the previous literature is found in Stakeholder, Agency, Legitimacy, and Good Management theories. Undoubtedly, as the institutional environment has an important impact on CSR reporting practices, it would be relevant for this field of research to analyze this relationship in companies from emerging countries. It is suggested for the sake of convenience to consider different levels of corporate governance mechanisms together due to the high interdependence among them. Consequently, the aim of this paper is to analyze whether different levels of corporate governance mechanisms (at the institutional, group, and firm level) are determinant factors of the CSR reporting practices in BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). The final sample was composed of 281 companies. On the basis of our results, we conclude that institutional corporate governance mechanisms influence the company’s CSR reporting strategy and that both CSR disclosure practices analyzed are affected by group-level corporate governance mechanisms in companies from family-based societies. Our findings support the appropriateness of separately analyzing this issue in emerging countries.
