Notes: Abstract A chitosanase was purified from the culture fluid of the chitino- and chitosanolytic bacterium Burkholderia gladioli strain CHB101. The purified enzyme (chitosanase A) had a molecular mass of 28 kDa, and catalyzed the endo-type cleavage of chitosans having a low degree of acetylation (0–30%). The enzyme hydrolyzed glucosamine oligomers larger than a pentamer, but did not exhibit any activity toward N-acetyl-glucosamine oligomers and colloidal chitin. The gene coding for chitosanase A (csnA) was isolated and its nucleotide sequence determined. B. gladioli csnA has an ORF encoding a polypeptide of 355 amino acid residues. Analysis of the N-terminal amino acid sequence of the purified chitosanase A and comparison with that deduced from the csnA ORF suggests post-translational processing of a putative signal peptide and a possible substrate-binding domain. The deduced amino acid sequence corresponding to the mature protein showed 80% similarity to the sequences reported from Bacillus circulans strain MH-K1 and Bacillus ehimensis strain EAG1, which belong to family 46 glycosyl hydrolases.

Notes: Abstract. Relativistic discrete-variational local density functional calculations on endohedral Gd@C60, La@C60,Gd@C74, and La@C74 are performed. All the C60- and C74-derivedlevels are lowered upon endohedral Gd and La doping. Both the Gd (4f75d16s2) and La (5d16s2) atoms only donate their two 6s valence electrons to the cages, leaving behind their 5d electrons when they are placed at the cage centers. Compared with large-band-gap C60, small-band-gap C74 and Gd (La)-metallofullerenes have strong both electron-donating and electron-accepting characters, and the calculated ionization potentials and electron affinities for them agree well with the available experimental data.

Notes: In order to study the wearing comfort of pressure for tight-fit clothing, the sensation of wearing pressure and the other related sensations have been assessed for knit garments, which have different sizes and fabrics which have different extensibilities, by developing a wearing experimental procedure. Using factor analysis with principal factor solutions and rotated by the Varimax method, we obtained relevant factor matrices about the subjective assessment. At the same time, objective clothing pressure, fabric extensibility and garment fitness have been measured. Regression analysis showed that the garment fitness and fabric extensibility had great predictive power for the subjective pressure assessment.

Notes: Relationships have been investigated between subjective pressure sensation and objective pressure measured, for knit garments of different sizes and fabrics with different extensibilities. Fechner's logarithmic law is used to investigate the relations. Equations are obtained for describing the Psychophysical mechanism of clothing pressure perception under certain conditions. Objective pressure measuring had high predictive power with regard to subjective pressure sensation only under those conditions. Wearing pressure comfort has a negative correlation with feelings of fetter, scratchy, heavy and pressure, and has a poor correlation with feelings of softness and smoothness. Using factor analysis with principal factor solutions and rotated by the Varimax method, we obtained factor matrices.

Notes: Melt-spun ribbons of tetragonal Pr2Fe14B exhibit favorable hard magnet characteristics. Technically relevant materials based on this compound, however, generally contain a certain amount of soft magnetic α-Fe or Fe3−xBx for remanence enhancement through exchange coupling. The nominal off-stoichiometric compositions lead to metallurgical complications, which are not easily resolvable by standard phase identification techniques such as x-ray diffraction and thermal magnetic analysis. As a viable alternative, 57Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopy can be used to delineate individual Fe sites. To provide a basis for such an approach, this report gives Mössbauer parameters including hyperfine magnetic field, isomer shift, and quadrupole splitting as obtained from a single-phase melt-spun Pr2Fe14B ribbon. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Epitaxial NiO hillocks on the {111} and {001} facets of truncated octahedral nanoparticles of Ni have been directly observed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. These nanometer hillocks form a rough shell enclosing the Ni nanoparticle. The epitaxial relationships of NiO on nanoparticles of Ni are the same as those of NiO on bulk Ni {111} and {001} surfaces. The formation of hillocks is related to the relaxation of the compressive stress in NiO arising from the very large lattice mismatch between NiO and Ni. The compressively stressed epitaxial NiO shell provides effective protection to the nanoparticles of Ni against further oxidation. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] Agnathan fish hold a key position in vertebrate evolution, especially regarding the origin of the head and neural-crest-derived tissue. In contrast to amphioxus, lampreys and other vertebrates possess a complex brain and placodes that contribute to well-developed eyes, as well as auditory and ...

Notes: [Auszug] Cambrian fossil-Lagerstätten (sites of exceptional fossil preservation), such as those from Chengjiang (Lower Cambrian) and the Burgess Shale (Middle Cambrian), provide our best window into the Cambrian ‘explosion’. Such faunas are known from about 40 localities, and have yielded a ...
