Notes: Detailed experimental results from the first free-electron maser experiment to use a pseudospark-based electron beam are presented in this paper. These include the design and realization of a pseudospark-based electron beam source and Cherenkov maser experiment. A pulsed, 70–80 kV, 10 A electron beam was obtained from the hollow cathode discharge phase of an 8-gap pseudospark (PS) discharge. The beam was used to produce coherent microwave radiation via a Cherenkov interaction between the electron beam and the TM01 mode of a 60-cm long alumina-lined waveguide. A gain of 29±3 dB was measured and an output power of 2±0.2 kW in the frequency range 25.5–28.6 GHz. Results from numerical simulations of the Cherenkov amplification are also presented and found to be consistent with the experimental results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A new convenient combinatorial method is developed here to derive the invariant points in multisystem closed nets – the absent phase substitution (APS) method. It substantially simplifies the derivation of the closed nets in multisystems with many components and phases. For the multisystems whose total phase number (NPS) ≤ twice the number of the absent phases (m) in an invariant assemblage, the method can yield regular closed nets with or without globally absent phases; for other multisystems, the method can yield the regular closed nets with globally absent phases. As examples, the APS method was used to predict: (1) the regular closed nets of unary to quinary n + 4-phase multisystems, unary 6-phase multisystem and ternary 8-phase multisystem; (2) the basic properties of the regular closed nets of the quaternary and quinary multisystems with n + 4 and n + 5 phases. Two multisystems were chosen to demonstrate how to select a realistic closed net from the numerous possible closed nets of a complex multisystem, and how to derive a realistic partially closed-net, closed-net-diagram and the related realistic straight-line-net-diagram. Comparisons of our APS method for the derivation of complicated closed nets with other methods indicate that this method is much simpler and more efficient.

Notes: The double perovskite Sr2FeMoO6 is a half-metallic ferrimagnet exhibiting significant magnetoresistance (MR) at 300 K in a magnetic field H〈2 kOe. A preliminary study of the influence of isovalent and aliovalent substitutions for Sr2+ on the magnitude of the room-temperature MR is reported. Of the polycrystalline samples, Sr1.9A0.1FeMoO6 (A=Ca, Ba, La or Pr), the best result was obtained with the Ba(0.1) sample, which showed a factor of 2 enhancement of the MR over that previously reported for Sr2FeMoO6. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A novel two-tube, two-stage, self-compensating resistive voltage divider with minimized stray capacitance using copper sulphate solution was explored to measure a fast high-impulse voltage output from a cable Blumlein generator. Self-compensation of the probe was achieved by matching the RC time constant in the two dividing stages. Stray capacitance of the probe was minimized by electric field contouring and matching methods. Experiments were carried out to investigate the probe responses as affected by self-capacitance, impedance, and stray capacitance. Calibration of the optimized probe showed a rise time of 15 ns at a load impedance of 8.68 kΩ with a hold-off voltage of 600 kV. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Thin films of (001)-oriented Sr2FeMoO6 have been epitaxially deposited or LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 (001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The deposition conditions were optimized. Single-phase Sr2FeMoO6 was obtained in 100 mTorr 99.999% Ar gas at 825 °C. Transport and magnetic data showed a metallic temperature dependence and a saturation magnetization Ms at 10 K of 3.2μB/f.u. However, the Curie temperature TC(approximate)380 K was reduced from 415 K found for tetragonal polycrystalline best ceramics, which lowers Ms at 300 K in the thin films to 1.5μB/f.u. compared to 2.2μB/f.u. in the ceramics. A low remanence was attributed to the presence of antiphase boundaries. A Wheatstone bridge arrangement straddling a bicrystal boundary was used to verify that spin-dependent electron transfer through a grain boundary and not an antiphase boundary is responsible for the low-field magnetoresistance found in polycrystalline samples below TC. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Propagation and post-acceleration of a pseudospark-sourced electron beam from a three-gap pseudospark discharge chamber were studied in recent experiments. The pseudospark produced an electron beam of two phases, an initial 22 kV, 50 A hollow cathode phase beam of brightness 109−10 Am−2 rad−2 followed by a 200 V, 200 A conductive phase (CP) beam of brightness 1011−12 Am−2 rad−2. The aim of these experiments was to post accelerate the lower-voltage, higher-current CP beam using an acceleration unit driven by a 40 kV, 125 ns voltage pulse produced by a cable Blumlein. The experiments were realized by attaching an acceleration unit to the downstream side of the anode of the discharge chamber. Both the pseudospark discharge and the cable Blumlein were triggered to ensure time correlation between initiation of the pseudospark discharge and post-acceleration of the beam. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An experimental investigation of a single-gap pseudospark was conducted using a flexible discharge chamber. The voltage breakdown characteristics were studied against a wide range of parameters such as gas pressure, gap separation, cathode cavity depth, cathode aperture size, external capacitance and applied voltage. An empirical formula, VB=(0.20±0.05) p−4.02±0.18 d−1.77±0.01, was obtained for the breakdown voltage VB in kV, given the gas pressure p in Torr and the gap separation d in mm. The electron beam extracted from this single gap was also studied and a current of up to 100 A was measured at 10 kV. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A trilayer La0.67Sr0.33MnO3/La0.85Sr0.15MnO3/La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) device has been epitaxially produced on a SrTiO3 substrate. The current–voltage curves show that tunneling process dominates the carrier transfer across the junction near room temperature. However, the tunneling effect becomes weak with decreasing temperature. Magnetoresistance of about 4%–6% has been observed below room temperature. The temperature dependence of TMR appears correlated to both the tunneling effect cross the junction and the spin polarization in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 layers. The temperature dependence of the TMR effect in this device is different from that of other devices based on colossal magnetoresistance materials. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract A fatal disease of sheep and goats in the northwestern part of China has been reported to be due to Theileria lestoquardi (syn. T. hirci). However, some characteristics of the causative agent are not in accordance with attributes ascribed to this parasite. We therefore determined the nucleotide sequence of the small-subunit ribosomal RNA (srRNA) gene of T. lestoquardi and the parasite identified in China and compared it with that of other Theileria and Babesia species. In the inferred phylogenetic tree the srRNA sequence of the Chinese parasite was found to be most closely related to T. buffeli and clearly divergent from T. lestoquardi, suggesting that it is an as yet unrecognized Theileria species. Extensive structural similarities were observed between the srRNA sequences of T. lestoquardi and T. annulata, revealing a close phylogenetic relationship between these two Theileria species. On the basis of the srRNA nucleotide sequence, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers were designed that specifically amplified genomic DNA of the Chinese Theileria species. These primers may be valuable tools in future epidemiology studies.
