    Notes: Abstract. This paper addresses the complexity of computing the smallest-radius infinite cylinder that encloses an input set of n points in 3-space. We show that the problem can be solved in time O(n 4 log O(1) n) in an algebraic complexity model. We also achieve a time of O(n 4 L⋅μ(L)) in a bit complexity model where L is the maximum bit size of input numbers and μ(L) is the complexity of multiplying two L bit integers. These and several other results highlight a general linearization technique which transforms nonlinear problems into some higher-dimensional but linear problems. The technique is reminiscent of the use of Plücker coordinates, and is used here in conjunction with Megiddo's parametric searching. We further report on experimental work comparing the practicality of an exact with that of a numerical strategy.

    Notes: Abstract. We introduce a new search problem motivated by computational metrology. The problem is as follows: we would like to locate two unknown numbers x,y ∈ [0,1] with as little uncertainty as possible, using some given number k of probes. Each probe is specified by a real number r∈ [0,1] . After a probe at r , we are told whether x≤ r or x \geq r , and whether y≤ r or y\geq r . We derive the optimal strategy and prove that the asymptotic behavior of the total uncertainty after k probes is 13/7 2 -(k+1)/2 for odd k and 13/10 2 -k/2 for even k .

    Notes: Selective growth of a novel flowerlike carbon structure is described. These structures are grown on Si (100) substrates coated with Fe2O3 particles. Deposition of carbon is performed by a RF-plasma-assisted pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) technique at 800 °C with pure oxygen as the working gas. The flowerlike carbon structures have 2 to 10 branches spread randomly outward from the center. These structures are constructed from nanoscale graphite crystallites, as revealed by Raman spectroscopy. The Fe2O3 particles oxidize the Si surface where selective growth of the flowerlike carbon occurs with Si–O–C bonds at the interface. We believe that similar bonding might have contributed to the selective growth of multiwalled carbon nanotubes on silicon dioxide. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Stoichiometric BC2N films can be deposited on Si (100) at 800 °C, however, they are phase separated as pure carbon and BN phases. Likewise, hybridized boron–carbon nitride (BCN) films can be synthesized on Ni substrates. On Ni, the carbon and BN phases are hybridized through carbon nitride and boron carbide bonds. These films appeared as fibrous nanostructures. Evidence indicates that the Ni substrate acts as a sink for the carbon and forces the carbon composites to grow on top of the B and N atoms. However, as these films are grown thicker, phase separation occurs again. These results indicate that hybridized BCN phases should now be regarded as semiconducting or superhard nanostructures. High-temperature deposition on Ni substrates might be a solution to the obstacle of preparing hybridized BCN phases. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

After cultured cysts are osmotically shocked by treating with distilled water, there is an exponential increase in the cyst form of Blastocystis pythoni; this was demonstrated by an immunofluorescence antibody assay against the culture organisms. In 11-day-old cultures of B. pythoni, 68.8% of the organisms (= 2.2 × 108 cysts/ml) were in the cyst form. Examination of thin sections of cysts revealed many similarities to the cyst forms of Blastocystis obtained from fecal samples in previous investigations. Freeze-fracture images of the plasma membrane of non-cyst cells also revealed a similar distribution of the intramembrane particles (IMP) when compared to non-cysts of B. hominis, while the plasma membrane of the cyst form showed practically no IMP. The size and morphology of particle-rich small depressions and smooth small protrusions observed on the P face and E face of non-cyst cells, respectively, were similar to endocytic sites reported for B. hominis. In the present study glycogen was cytochemically demonstrated at the ultrastructural level by an alkaline bismuth staining method in both cyst and non-cyst cells.

    Notes: Genes that are expressed during leaf senescence in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas, cv. Tainong 57) were identified by the isolation of cDNA fragments with the mRNA differential display method. Eight senescence-associated cDNA clones for mRNAs differentially expressed during leaf senescence were obtained and characterized. Northern blot analysis indicated that all these clones represented genes that are up-regulated during natural leaf senescence. Among them, five cDNA clones have been obtained in full length by screening a senescing leaf cDNA library or by performing rapid amplification of cDNA ends. DNA and protein database searches revealed that clones SPA15 and SPC9 encode proteins of unknown function. The other six clones SPG31, SPC20, SPG27, SPC25, SPC15 and SPC1 showed significant sequence homology to known genes encoding a cysteine proteinase, isocitrate lyase, S-adenosylmethionine decarboxylase, cysteine proteinase inhibitor and metallothionein-like type I protein. The gene expression patterns represented by SPG31, SPG27 and SPA15 were found to be highly specific in senescing leaves. The corresponding transcripts for SPG31, SPG27 and SPA15 were below detectable levels in other organs such as flowers, stems, roots and tubers. The possible physiological roles of these gene products in the leaf senescence process are discussed.

    Notes: This paper investigates the perceptions of senior auditors in large firms in Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand concerning sources of auditor legal liability, what should constitute auditors' duties and what may be done to reduce litigation exposure. Results are consistent with our conjecture that professional and organisational culture dominates perceptions, even in the presence of quite strong jurisdictional, cultural and institutional differences. The analysis indicates that auditors' perceptions are strongly affected by international trends, while cultural and institutional effects tend to be more subtle but are identified by detailed and focused analysis.

    Notes: Abstract: A model of herding is introduced which is exceptionally simple, incorporating only two phenomena, growth and addition. At each time step either (i) with probability p the system grows through the introduction of a new agent or (ii) with probability q = 1 - p a free agent already in the system is added at random to a group of size k with rate Ak. Two versions of the model, A k = k and A k = 1, are solved and in both versions we find two different types of behaviour. When p 〉 1/2 all the moments of the distribution of group sizes are linear in time for large time and the group distribution is power-law. When p 〈 1/2 the system runs out of free agents in a finite time.

    Notes: Abstract The intracellular calcium sensor protein calmodulin (CaM) interacts with a large number of proteins to regulate their biological functions in response to calcium stimulus. This molecular recognition process is diverse in its mechanism, but can be grouped into several classes based on structural and sequence information. We have developed a web-based database (http://calcium.uhnres.utoronto.ca/ctdb) for this family of proteins containing CaM binding sites or, as we propose to call it herein, CaM recruitment signaling (CRS) motifs. At present the CRS motif found in approximately 180 protein sequences in the databases can be divided into four subclasses, each subclass representing a distinct structural mode of molecular recognition involving CaM. The database can predict a putative CRS location within a given protein sequence, identify the subclass to which it may belong, and structural and biophysical parameters such as hydrophobicity, hydrophobic moment, and propensity for a -helix formation.
