Notes: Enhanced growth of CoSi2 on epitaxial Si0.7Ge0.3 has been achieved with an interposing amorphous-Si (a-Si) layer. The a-Si layer was used as a sacrificial layer to prevent Ge segregation, decrease the growth temperature, as well as maintain the interface flatness and morphological stability in forming CoSi2 on Si0.7Ge0.3 grown by molecular beam eptiaxy. The process promises to be applicable to the fabrication of high-speed Si–Ge devices. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The irreversibility lines of Pr-doped Br2Sr2Ca1−xPrxCu2Oy single crystals have been studied systematically. It was found that for the Pr-doped samples as compared with the undoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy the effective superconducting area shrinks, the irreversibility line Birr decreases, and the anisotropic parameter γ increases strongly due to Pr doping. It is evident that the substitution of Pr for Ca in the system effectively reduces the hole concentration on CuO2 layers to the underdoped state and destroys the Josephson coupling of the two superconducting regions of adjacent CuO2 layers. The vortex depinning is responsible for the irreversibility and the displacement value for vortex depinning is similar to that for vortex lattice melting, but with different physical meaning. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We determine the thermal expansion coefficient of a fluorinated poly(arylene ether) low-k dielectric film using Fourier analysis of x-ray reflectivity data. The approach is similar to that used in Fourier analysis of x-ray absorption fine structure. The analysis compares two similar samples, or the same sample as an external parameter is varied, and determines the change in film thickness. The analysis process is very accurate and depends on no assumed model. We determine a thermal expansion coefficient of 55±9×10−6 K−1 using this approach. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: InxGa1−xAs/AlyGa1−yAs/AlzGa1−zAs asymmetric step quantum-well middle wavelength (3–5 μm) infrared detectors are fabricated. The components display photovoltaic-type photocurrent response as well as the bias-controlled modulation of the peak wavelength of the main response, which is ascribed to the Stark shifts of the intersubband transitions from the local ground states to the extended first excited states in the quantum wells, at the 3–5.3 μm infrared atmospheric transmission window. The blackbody detectivity (Dbb*) of the detectors reaches to about 1.0×1010 cm Hz1/2/W at 77 K under bias of ±7 V. By expanding the electron wave function in terms of normalized plane wave basis within the framework of the effective-mass envelope-function theory, the linear Stark effects of the intersubband transitions between the ground and first excited states in the asymmetric step well are calculated. The obtained results agree well with the corresponding experimental measurements. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The Gd and oxygen doping effects on the Josephson coupling in Bi2Sr2Ca1−xGdxCu2O8+δ single crystals have been studied systematically. It was found that a pseudo-transition at temperature TcJ, attributed to the Josephson coupling between CuO2 layers, shifts dramatically to lower temperature with increasing magnetic field, and the temperature dependence of the pseudo-upper-critical-field HcJ associated with the coupling shows a clear upward curvature. For the Gd-doped as compared with the oxygen-doped crystal, the value of TcJ is smaller at the same carrier density, which implies that the substitution of Gd for Ca reduces the Josephson coupling more severely. The characteristics of the pseudo-transition associated with the Josephson coupling between CuO2 layers are different from those of the superconducting transition occurring in the CuO2 layers. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract The corrosion of Ni and FeAl in molten (0.62Li, 0.38K)2CO3 mixtures at 650°Cin air has been examined by the electrochemical-impedance spectroscopy (EIS)technique. The impedance spectra for Ni showed the typical characteristics ofa diffusion-controlled reaction, i.e., a semicircle at the high-frequency portand a line at the low-frequency port. The corrosion of FeAl also presentedthe feature of a diffusion-controlled reaction during initial immersion. However, the impedance spectra were composed of two capacitance loops after someimmersion time. The change of the impedance spectra with immersion time maybe ascribed to the formation of continuous external LiFeO2 and an innerAl2O3 layer. Equivalent circuits representing the featuresof the corrosion of Ni and FeAl were proposed to fit the impedance spectra andelectrochemical parameters in the equivalent circuits were also calculated. Basedon the measurement of diffusion impedance, the diffusion ofO− 2 was proposed to be the predominant feature of oxygen reduction.

Notes: Abstract  A large F2 and a RI population were separately derived from a cross between two indica rice varieties, one of which was highly resistant to bacterial leaf streak (BLS) and the other highly susceptible. Following artificial inoculation of the RI population and over 2 years of testing, 11 QTLs were mapped by composite interval mapping (CIM) on six chromosomes. Six of the QTLs were detected in both seasons. Eight of the QTLs were significant following stepwise regression analysis, and of these, 5 with the largest effects were significant in both seasons. The detected QTLs explained 84.6% of the genetic variation in 1997. Bulked segregant analysis (BSA) of the extremes of the F2 population identified 3 QTLs of large effect. The 3 QTLs were dentical to 3 of the 5 largest QTLs detected by CIM. The independent detection of the same QTLs using two methods of analysis in separate mapping populations verifies the existence of the QTLs for BLS and provides markers to ease their introduction into elite varieties.

Notes: Abstract  Cultivation of Monascus purpureus (CCRC 31615) for the production of natural pigments was investigated. Traditionally, Monascus species were grown on rice by solid-state culture. For large-scale cultivation, solid-state cultures were associated with some problems such as contamination and scale-up. By using submerged cultures with rice particles, a stirred-tank fermentor was not suitable for submerged cultures as the impeller tended to break the particles into small pieces. A conventional bubble column was also unsuitable as its mixing capability was poor. In the present study, a modified bubble column with wire-mesh draft tubes was employed for the cultivation of M. purpureus. The proposed column had a shorter mixing time and a higher oxygen transfer rate relative to the conventional bubble column. The production of pigments using the proposed column was up to 80% higher than that achieved using the conventional bubble column.
