Notes: Toroidicity-induced Alfvén eigenmode (TAE) stability in the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) [S. M. Kaye, M. Ono, Y.-K. M. Peng et al., Fusion Technol. 36, 16 (1999)] is analyzed using the improved NOVA-K code [N. N. Gorelenkov, C. Z. Cheng, and G. Y. Fu, Phys. Plasmas 6, 2802 (1999)], which includes finite orbit width and Larmor radius effects and is able to predict the saturation amplitude for the mode using the quasilinear theory. A broad spectrum of unstable global TAEs with different toroidal mode numbers is predicted. Due to the strong poloidal field and the presence of the magnetic well in NSTX, better particle confinement in the presence of TAEs in comparison with tokamaks is illustrated making use of the ORBIT code [R. B. White and M. S. Chance, Phys. Fluids 27, 2455 (1984)]. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A fully three-dimensional gyrokinetic particle code using magnetic coordinates for general geometry has been developed and applied to the investigation of zonal flows dynamics in toroidal ion-temperature-gradient turbulence. Full torus simulation results support the important conclusion that turbulence-driven zonal flows significantly reduce the turbulent transport. Linear collisionless simulations for damping of an initial poloidal flow perturbation exhibit an asymptotic residual flow. The collisional damping of this residual causes the dependence of ion thermal transport on the ion–ion collision frequency, even in regimes where the instabilities are collisionless. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The stomach contents of adult brown trout Salmo trutta from Lake Sorell, Tasmania, were analysed during 6 years of increasing turbidity to follow changes in the diet associated with dramatic changes in water clarity. Brown trout were sampled from 1996, when turbidity was 26 NTU, to 2001 when turbidity was 141 NTU. The mean relative volume of stomach contents decreased progressively to 2001, by which time it was only one sixth of that in 1996, and the mean diversity of prey in stomachs decreased from an average of more than six species per stomach in 1996 to one species in 2001. The species composition of stomach contents shifted from domination by the phreatoicid isopod Colubotelson sp., to the galaxiid fish Galaxias auratus and the amphipod Austrochiltonia australis, and then the cladoceran Daphnia carinata. To give an indication of diet changes over a typical yearly cycle in the current turbid state of the lake, a sample was taken from each season from December 2000 to September 2001. Two basic diets were found during the year; brown trout specialized on D. carinata in summer and autumn, and G. auratus in winter and spring. Mean diversity of prey was less than two species per stomach in all samples from 2000 to 2001, except for the sample from spring 2001 when it was 2·2 species per stomach, and the mean relative volume of stomach contents was more than three times greater in winter than any other season. The ways in which high turbidity may have influenced the changes in the brown trout diet observed since 1996 and the patterns evident during the seasons of 2000–2001 are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Granulite facies metapelites of the Mather and Filla Paragneisses within the Rauer Group, east Antarctica, possess markedly different compositions. The metamorphic evolution of the two metapelite types has been interpreted as temporally distinct, with the Rauer Group preserving at least two distinct granulite facies tectonothermal episodes. Calculated P–T pseudosections and orthopyroxene Al content indicate the revised maximum-preserved P–T conditions within the Mather Paragneiss to lie in the vicinity of 950–975 °C and 10–10.6 kbar, less extreme than previous estimates. The range of possible P–T paths for the Mather Paragneiss consistent with mineral textural relationships and pseudosections contoured for mineral proportion are significantly shallower (dP/dT) than previous estimates. A near-isothermal decompression P–T path, and extreme peak metamorphic conditions, are not necessary to explain the development of preserved mineral reaction textures. The Filla Paragneiss contains pelitic assemblages less amenable to rigorous quantitative analysis. Nevertheless, possibilities for the shared or otherwise metamorphic evolution of the Mather and Filla Paragneisses may be postulated on the basis of calculated pseudosections in the context of existing geochronology for the Rauer Group and preserved microstructures. A shared evolution, most likely during Pan-African granulite facies metamorphism, is plausible and consistent with mineral assemblage development, geochronology and microstructures. A revised interpretation of the Rauer Group's preserved metamorphic evolution may warrant the revision of existing tectonic models, applicable also to the remainder of Prydz Bay. More generally, the employed approach may incite a revision of peak P–T and P–T paths in other granulite facies terranes.

Notes: Replacement of native deep-rooted grasses by shallow-rooted ones has resulted in greater losses of water and nitrogen by drainage. To counter this effect we have tested the hypothesis that liming, and the conversion of annual grass pastures to perennial grass pastures, could improve the sustainability of grazing systems in the high rainfall zone (〉 600 mm per annum) in southeastern Australia, through better use of water and nitrogen. A field experiment consisting of sixteen 0.135 ha (30 m × 45 m) grazed paddocks representing four pasture combinations (annual pasture (mainly Lolium rigidum) without lime (AP–); annual pasture with lime (AP+); perennial pasture (mainly Phalaris aquatica) without lime (PP–), and perennial pasture with lime (PP+)) was carried out from 1994 to 1997 on an acid Sodosol (Aquic Hapludalf) in southern New South Wales, Australia. Measurements were made of surface runoff, subsurface flow (on top of the B horizon) and soil water content. The results showed that perennial grass pastures, especially PP+, extracted approximately 40 mm more soil water each year than the annual grass pastures. As a result, surface runoff, subsurface flow and deep drainage were at least 40 mm less from the perennial pastures. These measurements were further supported by a simulation of soil water deficit and deep drainage for AP– and PP+ paddocks, using 10 years' past meteorological records. Overall, the results suggested that well-grown, phalaris-based pastures could reduce recharge to groundwater and make pastoral systems more sustainable in the high rainfall zone.

Notes: Mineral N accumulates in autumn under pastures in southeastern Australia and is at risk of leaching as nitrate during winter. Nitrate leaching loss and soil mineral N concentrations were measured under pastures grazed by sheep on a duplex (texture contrast) soil in southern New South Wales from 1994 to 1996. Legume (Trifolium subterraneum)-based pastures contained either annual grass (Lolium rigidum) or perennial grasses (Phalaris aquatica and Dactylis glomerata), and had a control (soil pH 4.1 in 0.01 m CaCl2) or lime treatment (pH 5.5). One of the four replicates was monitored for surface runoff and subsurface flow (the top of the B horizon), and solution NO3– concentrations. The soil contained more mineral N in autumn (64–133 kg N ha−1 to 120 cm) than in spring (51–96 kg N ha−1), with NO3– comprising 70–77%. No NO3– leached in 1994 (475 mm rainfall). In 1995 (697 mm rainfall) and 1996 (666 mm rainfall), the solution at 20 cm depth and subsurface flow contained 20–50 mg N l−1 as NO3– initially but 〈 1 mg N l−1 by spring. Nitrate-N concentrations at 120 cm ranged between 2 and 22 mg N l−1 during winter. Losses of NO3– were small in surface runoff (0–2 kg N ha−1 year−1). In 1995, 9–19 kg N ha−1 was lost in subsurface flow. Deep drainage losses were 3–12 kg N ha−1 in 1995 and 4–10 kg N ha−1 in 1996, with the most loss occurring under limed annual pasture. Averaged over 3 years, N losses were 9 and 15 kg N ha−1 year−1 under control and limed annual pastures, respectively, and 6 and 8 kg N ha−1 year−1 under control and limed perennial pastures. Nitrate losses in the wet year of 1995 were 22, 33, 13 and 19 kg N ha−1 under the four respective pastures. The increased loss of N caused by liming was of a similar amount to the decreased N loss by maintaining perennial pasture as distinct from an annual pasture.

Notes: Mineral textures in metapelitic granulites from the northern Prince Charles Mountains, coupled with thermodynamic modelling in the K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O–TiO2–Fe2O3 (KFMASHTO) model system, point to pressure increasing with increasing temperature on the prograde metamorphic path, followed by retrograde cooling (i.e. an anticlockwise P–T path). Textural evidence for the increasing temperature part of the path is given by the breakdown of garnet and biotite to form orthopyroxene and cordierite in sillimanite-absent rocks, and through the break-down of biotite and sillimanite to form spinel, cordierite and garnet in more aluminous assemblages. This is equated to the advective addition of heat from the regional emplacement of granitic and charnockitic magmas dated at c. 980 Ma. A subsequent increase in pressure, inferred from the break-down of spinel and quartz to sillimanite, cordierite and garnet in aluminous rocks, is attributed to crustal thickening related to upright folding dated at 940–910 Ma. The terrane attained peak metamorphic temperatures of c. 880 °C at pressures of c. 6.0–6.5 kbar during this event. Subsequent cooling is inferred from the localised breakdown of cordierite and garnet to form biotite and sillimanite that developed in the latter stages of the same event. The textural observations described are interpreted via the application of P–T and P–T–X pseudosections. The latter show that most rock compositions preserve only fragments of the overall P–T path; a result of different rock compositions undergoing mineral assemblage changes, or changes in mineral modal abundance, on different sections of the P–T path. The results also suggest that partial melting during granulite facies metamorphism, coupled with melt loss and dehydration, initiated a switch from pervasive ductile, to discrete ductile/brittle deformation, during retrograde cooling.

Notes: Sapphirine, coexisting with quartz, is an indicator mineral for ultrahigh-temperature metamorphism in aluminous rock compositions. Here a new activity-composition model for sapphirine is combined with the internally consistent thermodynamic dataset used by THERMOCALC, for calculations primarily in K2O-FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O (KFMASH). A discrepancy between published experimentally derived FMAS grids and our calculations is understood with reference to H2O. Published FMAS grids effectively represent constant aH2O sections, thereby limiting their detailed use for the interpretation of mineral reaction textures in compositions with differing H2O.For the calculated KFMASH univariant reaction grid, sapphirine + quartz assemblages occur at P–T in excess of 6–7 kbar and 1005 °C. Sapphirine compositions and composition ranges are consistent with natural examples. However, as many univariant equilibria are typically not ‘seen’ by a specific bulk composition, the univariant reaction grid may reveal little about the detailed topology of multi-variant equilibria, and therefore is of limited use for interpreting the P–T evolution of mineral assemblages and reaction sequences. Calculated pseudosections, which quantify bulk composition and multi-variant equilibria, predict experimentally determined KFMASH mineral assemblages with consistent topology, and also indicate that sapphirine stabilizes at increasingly higher pressure and temperature as XMg increases. Although coexisting sapphirine and quartz can occur in relatively iron-rich rocks if the bulk chemistry is sufficiently aluminous, the P–T window of stability shrinks with decreasing XMg. An array of mineral assemblages and mineral reaction sequences from natural sapphirine + quartz and other rocks from Enderby Land, Antarctica, are reproducible with calculated pseudosections. That consistent phase diagram calculations involving sapphirine can be performed allows for a more thorough assessment of the metamorphic evolution of high-temperature granulite facies terranes than was previously possible. The establishment of a a-x model for sapphirine provides the basis for expansion to larger, more geologically realistic chemical systems (e.g. involving Fe3+).
