Description: The distribution of aluminium (Al) accumulation in the Ericales is surveyed, based on semi-quantitative tests of 114 species and literature data. Al accumulation mainly characterises the families Diapensiaceae, Pentaphylacaceae, Symplocaceae, Ternstroemiaceae, and Theaceae. Al accumulation is consistently present or absent in most families examined, but the character appears to be more variable in a few taxa (e.g., Lecythidaceae, Myrsinaceae). Although the interfamilial relationships within the Ericales require further research, the ability to accumulate high levels of Al appears to show considerable taxonomic significance. While the majority of Al accumulating Ericales includes woody, tropical plants, the feature is remarkably present in several herbaceous Diapensiaceae, which have a distribution in cold to temperate areas. The association of different mycorrhizae types with plant roots is suggested to play a role in the exclusion of high Al levels from the shoot.

Notes: Abstract Since the summer of 1996, scientists from China and Japan have conducted a joint observation of natural cloud-to-ground lightning discharges in the Zhongchuan area that is located close to Qinghai-Xizang (Tibet) Plateau, China. It has been found that the long-duration of intracloud discharge processes, just before the first return stroke, lasted more than 120 ms for 85% of cloud-to-ground flashes in this area, with a mean duration of 189.7 ms and a maximum of 300 ms. We present the results of charge sources neutralized by four ground flashes and two intracloud discharge processes, just before the first return stroke, by using the data from a 5-site slow antenna network synchronized by GPS with 1 μs time resolution. The result shows that the altitudes of the neutralized negative charge for three negative ground flashes were between 2.7 to 5.4 km above the ground, while that of neutralized positive charges for one positive ground flash and one continuing current process were at about 2.0 km above the ground. The comparison with radar echo showed that the negative discharges initiated in the region greater than 20 dBZ or near the edge of the region with intense echoes greater than 40 dBZ, while positive discharge initiated in the weak echo region.

Notes: Abstract  Lignin-degrading manganese (II) peroxidase (MnP) purified from the culture of a wood-rotting basidiomycete, Bjerkandera adusta, was used in the polymerization of guaiacol. MnP was found to catalyze polymerization of guaiacol in 50% aqueous acetone, dimethyl formamide, methanol, ethanol, dioxane, acetonitrile, ethylene glycol and methylcellosolve. Maximum yield of polyguaiacol was achieved in 50% aqueous acetone. The weight average molecular weight (M w) of the polymer was estimated to be 30 300 by gel permeation chromatography. However, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectroscopy (MALDI-TOF-MS) analysis gave a more reliable M w of 1690. IR, 13C-NMR, MALDI-TOF-MS and pyrolysis GC-MS analyses showed the presence of C–C and C–O linkages and quinone structure in polyguaiacol. It was also indicated that polyguaiacol has a methoxy-phenyl group as the terminal moiety. This suggests that polyguaiacol is a branched polymer in which guaiacol units are cross-linked at the phenolic group. Thermal gravimetric and differential scanning calorimetric analyses were also carried out. MnP also catalyzed the polymerization of o-cresol, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol and other phenolic compounds and aromatic amines. M w of these polymers ranged from around 1000 to 1500.

Notes: Abstract A novel selection marker gene for transformation of the white-rot basidiomycete Pleurotus ostreatus was developed by introducing a point mutation in a gene which encodes the iron-sulfur protein (Ip) subunit of succinate dehydrogenase. The mutant gene, Cbx R, encodes a modified Ip subunit with an amino-acid substitution (His239 to Leu) and confers resistance to the systemic fungicide, carboxin. The DNA sequence was integrated ectopically in the chromosome of the transformants. This is the first report of a homologous marker gene which is available for the molecular breeding of an edible mushroom.

Notes: A nondissipative drift kinetic simulation scheme, which rigorously satisfies the time-reversibility, is applied to the three-mode coupling problem of the ion temperature gradient (ITG) instability. It is found from the simulation that the three-mode ITG system repeats growth and decay with a period which shows a logarithmic divergence for infinitesimal initial perturbations. Accordingly, time average of the mode amplitude vanishes, as the initial amplitude approaches zero. An exact solution is analytically given for a class of initial conditions. An excellent agreement is confirmed between the analytical solution and numerical results. The results obtained here provide a useful reference for basic benchmarking of theories and simulations of the ITG modes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Feeding experiments were conducted to determine the bioavailability of new types of manganese (Mn) supplement to rainbow trout fingerlings. Two levels of Mn (7 and 14 mg kg−1 diet) were supplemented to diets using either manganese sulphate (Mn-S), glass-embedded Mn (Mn-Gl), or amino acid-chelated Mn (Mn-Am); more than one acid was used to chelate the metal. Rainbow trout weighing 1.30 g on average were fed the experimental diets for 12 weeks. Absorption of Mn from various compounds was evaluated using larger fish (105 g on average) fed the experimental diets. Growth was higher in the group supplemented with Mn-Am at both levels. Whole-body Mn content in fish fed the diet supplemented with Mn-Am was significantly higher than the other sources. Bone Mn accumulation was significantly higher in treatments with 14 mg Mn kg−1 diet from all sources, except Mn-Gl. At 7 mg kg−1, absorption from Mn-Am was significantly higher than from Mn-Gl and Mn-S. Mn retention from both levels of Mn-Am supplementation was significantly higher (P 〈 0.05) than the rest. The results indicated that amino acid-chelated Mn provided more bioavailable nutrient than Mn-S and Mn-Gl. Further, availability of Mn from Mn-Gl is equivalent to that of Mn-S.

Notes: This study was carried out to investigate whether readily available paprika can replace astaxanthin as a source of carotenoids in soft-dry pellets for broodstock yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata (Temminck & Schlegel). Five months prior to spawning, 120 fish of average body weight (BW) 6.2 ± 1.5 kg were divided into three groups and fed basal soft-dry pellets (SDP), SDP supplemented with 30 mg/kg astaxanthin (a-SDP), or SDP supplemented with 2% paprika (p-SDP). Feeding was carried out in floating net cages and two spawning trials were performed. Fish were selected (five male and five female per group per trial), injected with human chorionic gonadotropin (600 IU kg−1 fish) and transferred to 100 m3 indoor concrete tanks for spawning. In trial 1, egg production during the first day of spawning was highest for the p-SDP group, followed by the a-SDP and SDP groups. For the p-SDP, a-SDP and SDP groups, fertilization rates were 76.0%, 69.7% and 61.9% and hatching rates were 75.2%, 63.9% and 59.4%, respectively. In trial 2, fertilization rates were 80.9%, 78.0% and 86.8% and hatching rates followed the same trend as in trial 1, at 61.8%, 52.9% and 37.2%, respectively. Moreover, larvae of the p-SDP groups showed better survival at day 3 after hatching. Apart from the darker yellow colour of fertilized eggs of the astaxanthin or paprika supplemented diet groups, analysis showed that carotenoids from paprika were successfully incorporated into the eggs, mainly as zeaxanthin and lutein. Paprika supplementation did not affect the fatty acid and lipid class profiles of eggs and unfed larvae. These results indicate that paprika supplementation in soft-dry pellets is effective for good quality egg production in yellowtail.

Notes: This study focuses on reducing total phosphorus loading (T-P) from carp culture through improved feed formulation. Since phosphorus (P) contained in fish meal (FM) mainly in the form of tricalcium phosphate is not available to carp, which lack a stomach, the reduction of FM from their diets is effective for lowering T-P.Thus in this experiment, six diets (crude protein 〈 35%, digestible energy 〉 3.5 kcal g−1) were designed by substituting FM (10%−25%) with alternate protein ingredients such as poultry feather meal (PFM; 5%−10%), blood meal (BM; 5%−7%) and defatted soybean meal (dSBM; 4%−9%). All diets followed the Kasumigaura ‘Feed Standard’. The total dietary P was 1.0%−1.4% and water extractable P available to carp was 0.66%−0.71%, the levels meeting the dietary requirement of carp. A feeding trial was conducted with juvenile carp (4.6 ± 0.7 g) for 12 weeks at a mean water temperature of 23.7°C. The T-P loading from fish fed the different diets was estimated based on absorption and retention of dietary P.Growth performance corresponded to increasing levels of FM inclusion, being highest in the fish fed 25% FM diet; however, the decrease in T-P was achieved at the lower FM levels. The T-P (based on P retention) ranged from 8.9 to 11.7 kg t−1 production, much lower than that from the commercial diets (9.1–26.4 kg t−1 production). These results indicated that the reduction of FM levels in carp diets to 15%−20% through the combined use of PFM, BM and dSBM effectively lowered T-P. Moreover, the formulated diets were also found to be better than commercial diets in lowering the N loading from carp culture.

Notes: A novel closure model is presented to give a set of fluid equations which describe a collisionless kinetic system. In order to take account of the time reversal symmetry of the collisionless kinetic equation, the new closure model relates the parallel heat flux to the temperature and the parallel flow in terms of the real-valued coefficients in the unstable wave number space. Effects of the closure model on turbulence saturation and anomalous transport are investigated based on kinetic and fluid entropy balances. When the closure model is applied to the three-mode ion temperature gradient (ITG) driven system, the fluid system of equations reproduces the exact nonlinear kinetic solution found by Watanabe, Sugama, and Sato [Phys. Plasmas 7, 984 (2000)]. Oscillatory behaviors and initial amplitude dependence of other numerical kinetic solutions of the three-mode ITG problem can also be accurately described by the fluid system. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Bonding between p-Si and n-InP was performed through the surface activated bonding method at room temperature. Tensile results show that the samples were visibly separated from the bonded interface, indicating a weak bonding strength. The cause of the weak bonding strength was intensively investigated. Consistent results between x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscope investigations show that a weak phase of indium is terminated on the InP due to the depletion of phosphorus in the sputtered surface. Existence of indium layers on the debonded Si surface indicate that the samples were separated from the interface of In/InP, but not across the bonded interface of Si and indium. Typical pn junction current–voltage behavior indicates no high resistance interface layer that can withstand the flow of current through the interface. Remarkably, sputtering time as well as energy dependence on the interface current is found to be due to the accumulation of sputtering induced defects. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.
