    Notes: Abstract  A leaky aquifer system occurs in the coastal plain near Beihai, China. Seawater intrusion into the confined aquifer took place along the northern coast. Chloride concentrations at some observation wells increased steadily from 1988 and were at their peak in 1993. A quasi-three-dimensional element model has been developed to simulate the spatial and temporal evolution of hydraulic heads and chloride concentrations of the groundwater near the northern coast. The simulation model was based on the transition zone approach, which requires simultaneous solution of the governing water flow and solute transport equations. An irregular grid of a quadrangle was used to discretize the flow domain. Various aquifer parameters were verified with the numerical model in order to obtain satisfactory matches between computed values and observed data from an investigation. Three pumpage schemes were designed to use the calibrated model for prediction of future changes in water levels and chloride concentrations in groundwater in the study area. Results show that seawater intrusion would worsen in the confined aquifer if the current rates of groundwater pumpage continue. The alternative, to eliminate pumpage in the intruded area and to moderate pumpage rates from water supply wells far from the seashore, may limit seawater intrusion significantly and is considered attractive in the area.

    Notes: Abstract By analyzing the results of the numerical simulations of nonlinear propagation of three Gaussian gravity-wave packets in isothermal atmosphere individually, the nonlinear effects on the characteristics of gravity waves are studied quantitatively. The analyses show that during the nonlinear propagation of gravity wave packets the mean flows are accelerated and the vertical wavelengths show clear reduction due to nonlinearity. On the other hand, though nonlinear effects exist, the time variations of the frequencies of gravity wave packets are close to those derived from the dispersion relation and the amplitude and phase relations of wave-associated disturbance components are consistent with the predictions of the polarization relation of gravity waves. This indicates that the dispersion and polarization relations based on the linear gravity wave theory can be applied extensively in the nonlinear region.

    Notes: Raman scattering has been performed on single crystal hydrogenated silicon and germanium surfaces to investigate the temperature dependence of their vibrational spectral profiles. Based on a single-mode dephasing model for pure vibrational dephasing, the frequency shift and line broadening were analyzed to extract the following dephasing parameters: exchange mode frequency, coupling strength, and friction parameter. The exchange modes for the XH stretches on hydrogenated X(100) surfaces (X=Ge, Si, and C) are found to match their respective bending frequencies. The corresponding ones for hydrogenated X(111) surfaces, on the other hand, are located within the bulk phonon. This surface dependence of the exchange mode in surface vibrational dephasing dynamics is correlated with the structural relaxation and its associated symmetry variation at surfaces. It is further confirmed by the experiments performed on deuterated semiconductor surfaces. A site-symmetry induced representation method is exploited to analyze the symmetry properties of the surface vibrations on these two surfaces. This group-theoretical analysis has revealed the selection rules of choosing the dominant exchange modes on hydrogenated semiconductor surfaces. We have identified the exchange modes in the surface phonon spectra of these surfaces according to their symmetry properties. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The various contributions to the configurational entropy, Sconf, and heat capacity have been calculated within the precepts of the polymer chain statistics in the lattice-hole model for a liquid undergoing isothermal polymerization and remaining in an equilibrium state. Out of the five contributions from (i) the fractional occupancy of holes, (ii) coordination number or number of nearest neighbors, (iii) extent of polymerization, (iv) bond flexibility, and (v) entropy of mixing of entities, all but (i) shows a maximum in their plots against the extent of reaction, and of these only (i) and (iv) are temperature dependent. Thus the net Sconf and configurational heat capacity of a polymerizing liquid show a maximum in their plots against the extent of reaction. This maximum varies with the temperature of polymerization. If the polydispersity of a high temperature equilibrium state is frozen-in upon quenching the system to 0 K, the temperature-independent parts of the entropy persists at 0 K, as for isotopic mixtures of elements and chemical compounds. In real systems, this may occur if the liquid is impure or its molecules interact with its container's wall, thus preventing the formation of an infinitely long chain in the equilibrium state near 0 K. Calculations are also done for the monodispersed system and modifications made to the approximations used in the earlier calculations. These lead to a decrease in Sconf to zero at 0 K for a system with an infinite long polymer chain. The conclusions agree with the experimental finding that the net heat capacity of a polymerizing liquid at a fixed temperature first increases slowly, and then decreases rapidly, thus showing a broad maximum, before configurational freezing vitrifies the melt. It is predicted that if polymerization is done at a sufficiently high temperature so that the ultimately polymerized state is a liquid, the plots of the experimental heat capacity against the extent of polymerization will show a broad asymmetric maximum. Implications of these findings for our current understanding of vitrification and energy landscape models are discussed. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: RuO2(110) surfaces were prepared by exposing Ru(0001) to 107 L of O2 at 700 K. Postexposure of O2 at 300 K resulted in an additional oxygen species (O-cus) adsorbed on coordinatively unsaturated Ru atoms (Ru-cus). The surface was then exposed to CO at 300 K and studied by thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS). It is demonstrated that CO is oxidized at 300 K through reaction with both the O-cus as well as with surface O-atoms held in bridge positions (O-bridge). Although—at room temperature—CO adsorbs intermediately on the Ru-cus atoms, it is stable only at the Ru atoms underneath the O-bridge after the latter has been reacted off. At room temperature only surface oxygen takes part in the CO oxidation and the oxygen-depleted surface can be restored by O2 exposure, so that under steady-state flow conditions an oxygen-deficient surface will exist whose stoichiometry will be determined by the ratio of partial pressures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The current practice of maintenance on fishing vessels varies according to the operating policies of the owner/operator. On most occasions, the crew does not carry out regular maintenance while at sea. As such, all maintenance work is completed while the vessel is at the discharging port. The time between discharge ports can be as long as three to six months, which allows for failures on the machinery propagating and leading to a catastrophic breakdown. Discusses the possibility of avoiding such events by means of implementing an inspection regime based on the delay-time concept. Operating and failure data that have been gathered from a fishing vessel are used to demonstrate the proposed approach. The outcome of the model is incorporated into the existing maintenance policy of the fishing vessel to assess its effectiveness.

    Notes: This paper will review digital ink-jet printing on textiles and the advantages it offers to textile industry and consumers in comparison with conventional printing. The paper also reports on some of the results of a large project, which has been undertaken in the University of Leeds to address a number of issues concerning the problems associated with this technique. One of the important issues associated with digital ink-jet printing on textiles is speed and reliability, as this has commercial implications for the industry. The research carried out in Leeds has addressed this problem and solutions are proposed which will be covered in detail in this paper. Further research has also been carried out to establish the issues surrounding digital ink-jet printing and print quality when different types of designs are being printed. The paper will address the results of this research on quality assessment of digital ink-jet printing on textiles.

    Notes: "The offshore installations and wells (design and construction, etc.) regulations" (DCR) requires that all safety-critical elements in both the system and software domains be assessed and evaluated. In this paper, following a brief review of offshore system (application) safety analysis, offshore software safety analysis is introduced. It is followed by a study of combining offshore system safety analysis with software safety analysis. The typical standards for the development of safety-critical systems in several industrial sectors are discussed with particular reference to formal methods. A generic offshore software safety analysis framework is proposed with discussions. Formal methods for producing safety requirements specifications are then discussed. A case study is used to demonstrate safety requirements modelling for safety-critical software development. Finally recommendations for further development in offshore software safety analysis are given.

    Notes: : Our objectives were to determine the acceptability of irradiated fresh ground beef and to determine whether the acceptability was affected by information about benefits or by identifying the samples. The 218 subjects were separated into 4 groups comprising a 2 × 2 design of benefits and information. All subjects tasted 4 patties: 2 irradiated and 2 control. Ratings of overall liking, toughness, and flavor and texture liking were equal for both. Subjects rated the irradiated beef patties juicier than the nonirradiated. Benefit information and sample identification increased the liking ratings of the patties-because the group with no benefit information and no sample identification generally rated all samples lower.
