Notes: Current land-cover classifications used for global modelling portray Arctic tundra as one or two classes. This is insufficient for analysis of climate–vegetation interactions. This paper presents a simple three-level vegetation-map legend system useful for modelling at global, regional, and landscape scales. At the highest level (global scale: 107−108 km2) the Tundra Zone is divided into four subzones based on vegetation response to temperature along the latitudinal temperature gradient from north to south: (1) Cushion-forb, (2) Prostrate Dwarf-shrub, (3) Erect Dwarf-shrub, and (4) Low Shrub subzones. The boundaries follow a modification of Yurtsev's phytogeographic subzones. Parent material and topography are also major considerations at global, regional, and landscape scales. Soil pH is a key variable for many ecosystem responses, and a division into acidic (pH 5.5 or less) and nonacidic soils is used. A conceptual mesotopographic gradient is used to characterize the influence of soil-moisture and snow regimes. The example legend framework focuses on the Northern Alaska floristic subprovince, and could be expanded to other floristic provinces using local expert knowledge and available literature. Dominant plant functional types within each habitat type within the four subzones are also presented. Modellers could include or ignore different levels of resolution depending on the purpose of the model. The approach resolves conflicts in terminology that have previously been encountered between the Russian, North American, and Fennoscandian approaches to Arctic zonation.

Notes: A technique for removing surface contaminants from a sounding rocket spherical Langmuir probe is presented. Contamination layers present on probe surfaces can skew the collected data, resulting in the incorrect determination of plasma parameters. Despite following the usual probe cleaning techniques that are used prior to a launch, the probe surface can become coated with layers of adsorbed neutral gas in less than a second when exposed to atmosphere. The laboratory tests reported here show that by heating the probe from the interior using a small halogen lamp, adsorbed neutral particles can be removed from the probe surface, allowing accurate plasma parameter measurements to be made. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report the fabrication and characterization of AlxGa1−xN photodiodes (x∼0.70) grown on sapphire by low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition. The peak responsivity for −5 V bias is 0.11 A/W at 232 nm, corresponding to an internal quantum efficiency greater than 90%. The device response drops four orders of magnitude by 275 nm and remains at low response for the entire near-ultraviolet and visible spectrum. Improvements were made to the device design including a semitransparent Ni/Au contact layer and a GaN:Mg cap layer, which dramatically increased device response by enhancing the carrier collection efficiency. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: During the last eighty years, Essex and Suffolk Water has had to resort to various innovative water-storage and river-transfer schemes to satisfy increasing demands for water in the driest part of the UK. Recently, a series of droughts has emphasised the need for more water. To help meet this need, the company intends to recycle 35 MI/d of Chelmsford treated wastewater, using an £8 million plant to reduce pollutants. In April 2000, the company was granted discharge and abstraction licences by the Environment Agency for the recycling scheme. This paper includes (a) some of the results from several years of pre-impact baseline data, (b) an outline of pilot trials of the recycling processes, and (c) a brief description of the public consultation which was necessary to promote the scheme.

Notes: During the 1995–97 drought, serious difficulties were experienced by Essex and Suffolk Water in obtaining sufficient water to meet demand. As an emergency measure, a consent to discharge up to 30 Ml/d of ultraviolet disinfected treated wastewater into a raw-water reservoir was obtained from the Environment Agency. Performance of the ultraviolet plant and results of monitoring are reported, reporting procedures are outlined, and the reaction of media and water consumers are described.

Notes: Research into possible endocrine disrupters and their effects, which is necessary to prove the safety of recycling schemes, is described. The research concentrated on the analysis of three steroid oestrogens and on trout bioassay (vitellogenin). The work was carried out in (a) experimental fish tanks using various mixtures of river water and treated wastewater, (b) pilot plants for wastewater and potable water treatment, and (c) monitoring the oestrogenic effects of discharging disinfected treated wastewater into Hanningfield reservoir during the 1995–98 drought. The overall conclusion is that the presence of minute traces of oestrogens in wastewater is not an insurmountable problem because they can be removed by dilution and self-purification in rivers and reservoirs, by activated carbon and ultraviolet radiation in the recycling plant, and by ozone and activated carbon in water-treatment plants.

Notes: A complementary pair of rapid methods for the energy calibration of solid-state detectors have been developed. Each method requires only a single measurement from either (i) a glass sample containing elements chosen to produce fluorescence lines over a suitable energy range when exposed to a polychromatic beam of X-rays, or (ii) a powder diffraction standard in the presence of diffraction slits. The fluorescent glass method has the advantage of allowing simultaneous energy calibration of a number of detectors without requiring diffraction slits. There is the potential for the glass material to be incorporated into virtually any sample holder to allow a continuous in situ calibration. Complementary observations of a powder diffraction standard allow simultaneous calibration of diffraction 2θ and monitoring of the detector for drift.
