Notes: We investigate the thickness dependent properties of manganite films characterized by colossal negative magnetoresistance. Ultrathin, wedge-type films (0–120 Å) of La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 were deposited by laser ablation onto SrTiO3 and LaAlO3 substrates. The films were patterned into strips of different thickness and magneto-transport measurements were performed at temperatures between 5 and 290 K and in magnetic fields up to 5 T. Atomic force- and transmission electron microscopy were done to correlate the microstructure with the transport data. The resistivity of the films increases slightly with decreasing thickness due to substrate-induced compressive strain. Below 50 Å, the resistivity rises abruptly indicating a crossover to discontinuous and finally island-like film growth as confirmed by the microstructural techniques. At thicknesses slightly above the threshold for percolative conduction ((approximate)30 Å), an enhanced low-field magnetoresistance was observed as a signature of spin-dependent tunneling. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We show that a microfabricated field-effect sensor located at the terminus of a freestanding cantilever can detect surface potential changes resulting from the adsorption of charged molecules in an aqueous environment. The charge sensitive region, defined by lightly doped silicon, is embedded within the heavily doped silicon cantilever. Since both the electrical trace and sensitive region are passivated with thermally diffused silicon dioxide, the entire cantilever can be immersed in buffer solutions and cleaned with strong acids without degrading its electrical response. As an example, we demonstrate that the device can reproducibly detect adsorption of positively charged poly-L-lysine (PLL) on silicon dioxide. We also demonstrate that PLL adsorption and pH can be measured in discrete solutions by scanning the cantilever through parallel, distinct streams within a microfluidic channel array. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: We test the influence of the Coulomb interaction on the thermodynamic and cluster generation properties of a system of classical particles described by different lattice models. Numerical simulations show that the Coulomb interaction produces essentially a shift in temperature of quantities like the specific heat but not qualitative changes. We also consider a cellular model. The thermodynamic properties of the system are qualitatively unaltered.

Notes: Abstract: Anticipation in traffic means that drivers estimate their leaders' velocities for future timesteps. In the article a specific stochastic car-following model with non-unique flow-density relation is investigated with respect to anticipatory driving. It is realized by next-nearest-neighbour interaction which leads to large flows and short temporal headways. The underlying mechanism that causes these effects is explained by the headways of the cars which organize in an alternating structure with a short headway following a long one, thereby producing a strong anti-correlation in the gaps or in the headways of subsequent cars. For the investigated model the corresponding time headway distributions display the short headways observed in reality. Even though these effects are discussed for a specific model, the mechanism described is in general present in any traffic flow models that work with anticipation.

Notes: Abstract: The Krauss-model is a stochastic model for traffic flow which is continuous in space. For periodic boundary conditions it is well understood and known to display a non-unique flow-density relation (fundamental diagram) for certain densities. In many applications, however, the behaviour under open boundary conditions plays a crucial role. In contrast to all models investigated so far, the high flow states of the Krauss-model are not metastable, but also stable. Nevertheless we find that the current in open systems obeys an extremal principle introduced for the case of simpler discrete models. The phase diagram of the open system will be completely determined by the fundamental diagram of the periodic system through this principle. In order to allow the investigation of the whole state space of the Krauss-model, appropriate strategies for the injection of cars into the system are needed. Two methods solving this problem are discussed and the boundary-induced phase transitions for both methods are studied. We also suggest a supplementary rule for the extremal principle to account for cases where not all the possible bulk states are generated by the chosen boundary conditions.

Notes: Abstract: We have studied the temperature dependent resistivity ρ( T ) of La2-xSrxCuO4 epitaxial thin films in the doping range 0.045 ⩽ x ⩽ 0.25 in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T. The zero-field resistivity ρ( T ) of these samples in the pseudogap regime, can be scaled onto one single universal curve in a broad temperature range by using a linear transformation of both temperature and resistivity. The high field data ρ( T ) reveal a metal to insulator transition (MIT) at low temperatures, well into the overdoped regime. For samples having k F l 〈 1, with kF the Fermi wave vector and l the mean free path, this low temperature insulating behavior of the resistivity is described by the variable range hopping conductivity (VRH). For samples with k F l 〉 1, the divergence follows ρ( T ) ∼ ln (1/ T ) or a power law, depending upon the Sr-content. We further found that the residual conductivity at the minimum in ρ( T ), appearing due to the MIT, follows a linear behavior with respect to the Sr-content. It is argued that the unusual MIT in compounds with k F l 〉 1, is most probably associated with the pseudogap and the behavior of charge stripes at low temperatures.

Notes: Abstract: This paper introduces a car following model where the driving scheme takes into account the deficiencies of human decision making in a general way. Additionally, it improves certain shortcomings of most of the models currently in use: it is stochastic but has a continuous acceleration. This is achieved at the cost of formulating the model in terms of the time derivative of the acceleration, making it non-Newtonian. However, the recipe for construction of bounded rational driver models proposed in this paper seems to be very general and can be applied to most, if not all of the traditional car-following models.

Notes: Abstract: Final states indicating the presence in the reaction of three-body fragmentation processes has been observed in 32S+59Co and 32S+63Cu dissipative collisions at 5.6 A · MeV. Besides the already observed sequential binary process, data analysis reveals the presence of prompt ternary break-up of the composite system. Indications on the system configuration at the scission have been deduced by analyzing the event shape in the momentum phase space. The decay appears to occur in a collinear configuration, one of the produced fragments originating from the neck which connects the other two. In spite of the large energy dissipation, structure effects in the charge partition seem to affect part of events.

Notes: Abstract. A new type of noised induced phase transitions is proposed. It occurs in noisy systems with dynamical traps. Dynamical traps are regions in the phase space where the regular “forces” are depressed substantially. By way of an example, a simple oscillatory system $\{x,v = \dot{x}\}$ with additive white noise is considered and its dynamics is analyzed numerically. The dynamical trap region is assumed to be located near the x-axis where the “velocity” v of the system becomes sufficiently low. The meaning of this assumption is discussed. The observed phase transition is caused by the asymmetry in the residence time distribution in the vicinity of zero value “velocity”. This asymmetry is due to a cooperative effect of the random Langevin “force” in the trap region and the regular “force” not changing the direction of action when crossing the trap region.
