Notes: Beta-carotene producers and food manufacturers have collated information about the usage of beta-carotene as a colourant and in fortified foods and food supplements. These data have been combined with food consumption data from some European countries consuming higher amounts of processed foods, to generate estimates of high-level intake to compare with official advice. Intake estimates of beta-carotene from food colour uses for German, French and British adults ranged from 0.4 to 1.9 mg/day. Pack dosage directions and beta-carotene content were used to estimate intakes from supplements, which could range from less than 1 mg/day to 100 mg/day. However, for the majority of products recommended daily doses were less than 10 mg/day. Theoretical intakes from fortified drinks could exceed 5 mg/day, but this level of intake is unlikely to be maintained in the longer term. The most important sources of intake appeared to be from food supplements and fortified foods. Intakes of isolated beta-carotene were comparable to intakes of natural beta-carotene from the diet.

Notes: Outlines the key areas which manufacturing organisations should consider in order to improve the effectiveness of training programmes for production operators. The authors carried out a study of UK-based manufacturing companies to identify current evaluation methods, and identify the predominant barriers to the implementation of effective training programmes. The research concluded that most of the companies believed that their training programmes did not realise the full potential in terms of higher productivity, better on-the-job performance, and improved quality. Causal factors were found to be inadequate training objectives and evaluation mechanisms, which stem from a number of barriers. Proposes a training programme measurement model, which has been adapted from existing concepts, and could be applied by manufacturing organisations as a framework for carrying out appropriate evaluation activities. Concludes with some recommendations for future policy, and areas of further research in the implementation of training programmes in manufacturing organisations.

Notes: Yersinia enterocolitica strains of biotype 1A lack the known virulence determinants of strains in other categories, including the Yersinia virulence plasmid (pYV), and several chromosomal markers of pathogenicity. For this reason, and also because Y. enterocolitica strains of biotype 1A are frequently isolated from the environment or asymptomatic individuals, these bacteria are often assumed to be avirulent. On the other hand, there is a considerable body of clinical, epidemiological and experimental evidence to indicate that at least some strains of Y. enterocolitica biotype 1A are able to cause gastrointestinal symptoms which resemble those caused by pYV-bearing strains. The availability of a number of experimental systems, including cell culture and animal models of infection, provides an opportunity to identify and characterise the essential virulence determinants of biotype 1A strains.

Notes: The paper presents the development of a continuous improvement process for the customer relations department at Severn Trent Water in the UK. In-company research was carried out to identify the main barriers to continuous improvement in the areas of leadership, training, communication, motivation, teamwork, and change management. The study concluded that the company should develop an organisational culture and management style to support continuous improvement of daily working processes, and that change should be managed against the achievement of appropriate quality targets. A continuous improvement process was developed based on a structured problem-solving model incorporating the application of established quality tools, to be applied by problem solving teams from the customer relations department. It was recommended that the team members should be trained in the problem solving process, and the related quality tools and techniques. Also, management should lead and support this approach by concentrating on team (rather than individual) performance achievement.

Notes: Hoshin Kanri has been described as one of the core aspects of Japan's management system, for integrating the principles of total quality management (TQM) within the organisation's business strategy. Although most of the published case studies have involved large multinational manufacturers, the authors believe that Hoshin Kanri can be applied in any type or size of organisation. This paper describes how the quality and reliability (Q&R) team of the Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG) at the University of Warwick has applied Hoshin Kanri to create a deeper understanding of customer requirements, a team vision and strategic goals. Deployment has led to achievement of team consensus and commitment to delivering and reviewing the plan, and has demonstrated that the technique works well in a small team within the service sector.

Notes: Abstract. A greenhouse experiment was conducted evaluating the effects of water stress on uptake and accumulation of selenium (Se) as well as on uptake of calcium (Ca), potassium (K), and magnesium (Mg) in tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb). Also, this study has documented changes in soil Se inventory of Se-contaminated field soil. The findings of this experiment suggest that low soil moisture and plant water stress had a positive effect on plant tissue Se concentration. However, the negative effect of water stress on plant growth superimposed the increase of plant tissue Se concentration. Therefore, Se accumulation and soil Se removal by tall fescue became largely dependent on plant dry weight production. Strategies utilizing for remediation of Se-contaminated soils should maximizing the growth rates of tall fescue by maintaining soil moisture levels above water-stress conditions (greater than −1.0 MPa). The results of this study also suggest that the relative sensitivity of net uptake of Se and the three macronutrients to reduced soil moisture is: Ca uptake 〈 Se uptake 〈 Mg uptake 〈 K uptake.

Notes: Abstract We report Mössbauer milliprobe measurements on small single-crystals of a magnesium-rich hedenbergite, approximate composition CaFe0.54Mg0.46 (SiO3)2, in which each of the electric-field gradient and mean-squared displacement tensors for Fe2+ in the M1 site of the crystal are precisely determined. Each tensor has in common, as required of crystal symmetry, the twofold axis of the monoclinic unit cell, but the principal directions of the two tensors in the perpendicular plane are non-coincident. The mean-squared displacements determined in the Mössbauer experiment exceed those determined from the X-ray vibration ellipsoids for Fe2+/M1 by a factor of 1.6; the anisotropy in the mean-squared displacement tensor from the Mössbauer measurements exceeds that from X-ray by a factor of around 5. The ramifications of these differences are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The milliprobe technique has expanded the number of potential applications of Mössbauer spectroscopy, including the study of single crystals. Recent work has reported determination of the electric field gradient and mean-squared displacement tensors in hedenbergite, a member of the pyroxene mineral group. Results are used to assess Mössbauer data collected from clinopyroxene single crystals that occur as inclusions in diamond.
