    Notes: Taylor's theory of relaxed toroidal plasmas (states of lowest energy with fixed total magnetic helicity) is extended to include a vacuum between the plasma and the wall. In the extended variational problem, one prescribes, in addition to the helicity and the magnetic fluxes whose conservation follows from the perfect conductivity of the wall, the fluxes whose conservation follows from the assumption that the plasma-vacuum interface is also perfectly conducting (if the wall is a magnetic surface, then one has the toroidal and the poloidal flux in the vacuum). Vanishing of the first energy variation implies a pressureless free-boundary magnetohydrostatic equilibrium with a Beltrami magnetic field in the plasma, and in general with a surface current in the interface. Positivity of the second variation implies that the equilibrium is stable according to ideal magnetohydrodynamics, that it is a relaxed state according to Taylor's theory if the interface is replaced by a wall, and that the surface current is nonzero (at least if there are no closed magnetic field lines in the interface). The plane slab, with suitable boundary conditions to simulate a genuine torus, is investigated in detail. The relaxed state has the same double symmetry as the vessel if, and only if, the prescribed helicity is in an interval that depends on the prescribed fluxes. This interval is determined in the limit of a thin slab. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: : We tracked vegetation succession on a debris-flow deposit in Oregon's Coast Range to examine factors influencing the development of riparian plant communities following disturbance. Plots were stratified across five areas of the deposit (bank slump, seep, upper and lower sediment wedge, log jam) the first growing season after debris flow. At six times during the next ten years we estimated cover of vascular plants and tallied density of woody plants. Plant colonization occurred within two years. Total cover increased two-to seven-fold on the five areas within three years. Red alder and salmonberry were the dominant species, although weedy herbs persisted where woody species were lacking. Ordination of cover data showed that the five areas remained floristically distinct over time, while undergoing similar shifts related to the increasing dominance of alder and salmonberry. Rapid height growth of alder allowed it to outcompete salmonberry and effectively capture most areas by the tenth year, even where sprouts from transported rhizomes gave salmonberry an early advantage. Our results suggest that successional patterns were influenced by substrate variability, species composition of initial colonizers, propagule sources and their distribution, and species life-history traits such as growth rate, competitive ability, and shade tolerance.

    Notes: Abstract Based on the description of shear horizontal (SH) wave propagation in arbitrarily oriented transversely isotropic media, radiation characteristics of ultrasonic transducers for this wave type are determined. The radiated wavefields are obtained by point source superposition, making use of an analytical relationship for the wave propagation direction as a function of the spatial coordinates. Approximate formulae are given for the radiation characteristics of circular and rectangular transducers in the far-field, which are in a form similar to the isotropic material case. Focusing on transversely isotropic weld metal specimens and unidirectional composites, numerical evaluation is performed for normal-incidence probes as well as for electromagnetic acoustic transducers.

    Notes: Abstract The EDPEPPS toolset is the fruit of a 10 man-year-research development and integrates many modules in order to predict and classify the execution times of C/PVM programs mapped on a cluster of heterogeneous workstations. In this project, a performance characterization tool called Chronos has been developed to model the processor and C instructions. Chronos can be used to characterize a wide range of machines as it is developed round a specialized benchmark. Chronos uses a parameter-based model and characterizes the machine and the program studied. Then, the execution predictor evaluates the time spent in each program block, according to a generic model of cache memory which simulates most of the CPU internal cache memory architecture. Chronos does not need any user's intervention as all the operations are automatic. The performance accuracy of Chronos is highlighted by a real processor-consuming sequential example. This tool can be used by designers to predict the average execution time of their applications quickly. Average percentage errors obtained from this tool are below 10%.

To check the influence of structuralcharacteristics on theirpermeation through the blood—brain barrier (BBB), a set of radioactive[99mTc]chelates bearing amine groups was synthesizedand tested in vitro as well as in vivo. Methods. Compounds with different log P and pKa values wereobtained by complex forming reactions of [99mTc]pertechnetate withvarying substituents. Transport was studied in rats and mice, as wellas in an ECV304 cell culture model. Results. In vitro higher permeation was found for compounds withelectron attracting substituents in β-position to the amine group (pKavalues 7.4 to 8.3) than for those with more basic amine groups (pKavalues 〉 8.9) even for similar log D pH 7.4. In vivo brain uptake between0.8 and 4.8;pc of the injected dose (ID) per organ was found for theformer, whereas 〈0.4% ID were present for the latter. Conclusions. Three structurally diverse classes of [99mTc]chelatesshowed distinct patterns with regard to brain uptake in vivo and BBBpermeability in vitro which could not be predicted by their lipophilicityalone. The close correlation between the data from rats and mice andthose obtained with cell cultures render the ECV304 cells an attractivemodel for the screening of new compounds.

    Notes: Abstract RAPD (randomly amplified polymorphic DNA) analyses were carried out on 21 accessions of Lachenalia bulbifera (Cyrillo) Engl. Five pre-selected primers produced an average of 88% polymorphisms. Fifteen of the 21 accessions could be identified using the five primers. In a pairwise comparison genetic distance values ranging from 0.11 to 1.08 were obtained. These values reveal a high amount of variation within the species. The genetic distance values within the tetraploid and hexaploid groups on the south coast were low, but values were high between the groups on the south coast and those on the west coast. A dendogram was constructed from the RAPD banding profiles, using UPGM cluster analysis. The dendogram clusters certain accessions together. These clusters are supported by their geographical locality and chromosome data. The hexaploid group, tetraploid group and octoploid group on the south coast are respectively clustered together. It is concluded that RAPDs can be used to assess the genetic variation at an intra-specific level in Lachenalia.
