Notes: Competitive market pressures within today's contemporary business environments have encouraged the partnership of many supply chain members. Of particular interest is the development of successful relationships between firms in an effort to gain product and service quality and efficiency that would otherwise go left unclaimed. This research specifically identifies the need for supply chain members to foster healthier relationships within the firm in order to realize more fully success and obtain the benefits associated with external partnerships. The concept of internal relationship marketing is employed and a model is proposed to aid companies in identifying the variables associated with marketing to the internal customer. The motor carrier industry provides an appropriate service setting for the analysis, and implications for retaining the very best customer-conscious frontline employees are outlined.

Notes: Over the past decade, there have been a number of studies that examined either shipper or carrier selection and evaluation factors. However, there has been little comparison between how these two groups perceive these factors with regard to their partners. This study examines the similarities and differences with the rankings of factors between shipper and carrier groups. Furthermore, the results highlight the various levels of satisfaction between the two groups.

Notes: A consumer model of environmentally responsible purchase behaviour was tested using covariance structural analysis. The model successfully predicted the purchase of environmentally responsible and non-responsible product alternatives. A hierarchial relationship from values to product specific attitudes to purchase intention to purchase behaviour was confirmed. Individual consequences, which take the personal implications of consumption into account, were found to be just as important in predicting intention as the environmental consequences of a product. The study empirically tested a values typology as a basis to explain attitude formation.

Notes: A lethal thiamine deficiency, termed Cayuga Syndrome (CS), affects larval landlocked Atlantic salmon Salmo salar in several of New York's Finger Lakes. This syndrome has been linked to a maternal diet of alewife Alosa pseudoharengus that have high thiaminase concentrations within them and were not endemic to the Finger Lakes. We evaluated thiamine bath treatments at a range of concentrations for remediation of the syndrome (CS) by treating eggs during water-hardening or sac-fry at the onset of CS when clinical signs such as yolk sac and cerebral edema, vascular and mandibular abnormalities, and in particular when abnormal swimming, lethargy and yolk sac oppacities, first became evident. Concentrations of thiamine in sac-fry from both treatments were elevated by a single 1-h exposure of eggs or sac-fry in a thaimine bath. Thiamine concentrations of at least 1,000 mg/L. during water hardening, or 10,000 mg/L if treated as moribund sac-ky, were necessary to almost eliminate syndrome-related mortality. When post-treatment total thiamine tissue concentrations (i.e., the sum of thiamine pyrophosphate, thiamine mono-phosphate and free thiamine) approached or exceeded a threshold of 0.8 nmol/g sac-fry in the sac-fry, mortality due to CS was significantly reduced. Earlier treatment at the egg hardening stage may provide a greater likelihood of avoiding long term effects of the deficiency.

Notes: Recent treatments of flute-mode-type turbulence in closed magnetic flux surface geometry align the coordinates to the magnetic field, leaving the field with one nonvanishing contravariant component. Magnetic shear leads to strong deformation of coordinate cells in the plane perpendicular to the field, impacting the results. To remedy this one can apply shifts in the drift angle coordinate, the one which remains purely periodic. All operations involving polarization and nonlinear advection are then performed locally on an orthogonal grid, allowing arbitrarily sheared and shaped magnetic geometries in computations. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Low frequency tokamak edge turbulence is modelled numerically using gyrofluid equations for electrons and ions on an equal footing. The electrons are electromagnetic, and arbitrarily strong finite gyroradius effects are included for the ions. Computations are in a globally consistent truncation of flux surface geometry arising from ideal tokamak equilibria. The turbulence is similar to that in the fluid model in steep gradient regimes, for which the electron transit frequency is comparable to that of the turbulence. The nonlinear drift wave instability is shown to be caused by E×B self-advection, and is similar for both two-and three-dimensional models. The turbulence always has drift wave mode character for the parameter regime of interest, except when the ideal ballooning threshold is reached. Turbulence interacts strongly with E×B shear flows, but does not build the flow shear to significant levels by itself. On the other hand, an imposed shear layer arising from the neoclassical equilibrium of the edge region does have the necessary properties and scaling to eventually result in a credible edge transport transition scenario. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Efficient uptake of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis into cultured mammalian cells is the result of high-affinity binding of invasin to β1 chain integrins. We demonstrate here that uptake requires Rac1 and Arp 2/3 function. Bacterial uptake was stimulated by GTPγS, but was inhibited in mammalian cells transfected with the interfering Rac1-N17 derivative. Rac1 was found to be activated in response to integrin engagement by invasin, whereas Rac1 and Arp 2/3 were found to be intensely localized around phagosomes bearing bacteria, indicating a specific role for Rac1 signalling from the nascent phagosome to downstream effectors. To determine whether the Arp 2/3 complex was a component of this proposed pathway, cells overproducing various derivatives of Scar1/WAVE1, an Arp 2/3-binding protein, were analysed. Sequestration of Arp 2/3 away from the phagocytic cup as a result of Scar1/WAVE1 overproduction dramatically inhibited uptake. To determine whether signalling from Rac1 to Arp 2/3 occurred via N-WASP, uptake was analysed in a cell line lacking expression of WASP and N-WASP. Uptake was unaffected by the absence of these proteins, indicating that β1 integrin signalling from Rac1 to Arp 2/3 can occur in the absence of N-WASP function.

Notes: Abstract Virtually every cell type in metazoan organisms produces heparan sulfate. These complex polysaccharides provide docking sites for numerous protein ligands and receptors involved in diverse biological processes, including growth control, signal transduction, cell adhesion, hemostasis, and lipid metabolism. The binding sites consist of relatively small tracts of variably sulfated glucosamine and uronic acid residues in specific arrangements. Their formation occurs in a tissue-specific fashion, generated by the action of a large family of enzymes involved in nucleotide sugar metabolism, polymer formation (glycosyltransferases), and chain processing (sulfotransferases and an epimerase). New insights into the specificity and organization of the biosynthetic apparatus have emerged from genetic studies of cultured cells, nematodes, fruit flies, zebrafish, rodents, and humans. This review covers recent developments in the field and provides a resource for investigators interested in the incredible diversity and specificity of this process.
