Notes: This work addresses the construction of slow manifolds for chemically reactive flows. This construction relies on the same decomposition of a local eigensystem that is used in formation of what are known as Intrinsic Low Dimensional Manifolds (ILDMs). We first clarify the accuracy of the standard ILDM approximation to the set of ordinary differential equations which model spatially homogeneous reactive systems. It is shown that the ILDM is actually only an approximation of the more fundamental Slow Invariant Manifold (SIM) for the same system. Subsequently, we give an improved extension of the standard ILDM method to systems where reaction couples with convection and diffusion. Reduced model equations are obtained by equilibrating the fast dynamics of a closely coupled reaction/convection/diffusion system and resolving only the slow dynamics of the same system in order to reduce computational costs, while maintaining a desired level of accuracy. The improvement is realized through formulation of an elliptic system of partial differential equations which describe the infinite-dimensional Approximate Slow Invariant Manifold (ASIM) for the reactive flow system. This is demonstrated on a simple reaction-diffusion system, where we show that the error incurred when using the ASIM is less than that incurred by use of the Maas-Pope Projection (MPP) of the diffusion effects onto the ILDM. This comparison is further done for ozone decomposition in a premixed laminar flame where an error analysis shows a similar trend. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Looks at Harrah's casino business and how it is run, with the aid of analytics: accessing; aggregating; and analysing large amounts of data from many sources. States Harrah's converts data into knowledge to enhance its ability to make effective business decisions. Lists out five "rules of the road" with descriptions of them in full. Concludes that advances in analytics are breathing new life into companies' efforts in creating new businesses and line extensions.

Notes: : A computer program was developed to determine the effect of fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficient (hfp) on microbial and nutrient destruction during aseptic processing of fluid-particle mixtures. According to the simulation results, an increase in hfp did not improve the nutrient retention even though it reduced the time of heating required to reach a target lethality. It was found that even if the process were designed using the most conservative hfp, one would still obtain a high product quality for particles of small sizes. Quality losses were found to be more pronounced for larger particles. Ensuring a narrow residence time distribution of particles within the holding tube can minimize overheating and unnecessary loss of nutrients.

Notes: [Auszug] The subventricular zone (SVZ) is a principal source of adult neural stem cells in the rodent brain, generating thousands of olfactory bulb neurons every day. If the adult human brain contains a comparable germinal region, this could have considerable implications for future neuroregenerative ...

Notes: [Auszug] Glycolysis and apoptosis are considered major but independent pathways that are critical for cell survival. The activity of BAD, a pro-apoptotic BCL-2 family member, is regulated by phosphorylation in response to growth/survival factors. Here we undertook a proteomic analysis to assess whether ...

Notes: We study trading models when the distribution of signals such as costs or values is not known to traders or the mechanism designer when the profit-maximizing trading procedure is designed. We present adaptive mechanisms that simultaneously elicit this information (market research) while maintaining incentive compatibility and maximizing profits when the set of traders is large (market design). First, we study a monopoly pricing model where neither the seller nor the buyers know the distribution of values. Second, we study a model with a broker intermediating trade between a large number of buyers and sellers with private information about their valuations and costs. We show that when the set of traders becomes large our adaptive mechanisms achieve the same expected profits for the monopolist and the broker as when the distribution of signals is common knowledge.

Notes: The oxidation behavior of SiCN–ZrO2 fibers and SiCN at 1350°C are compared. The as-measured parabolic rate constants for the two materials are nearly the same (15–20 × 10−18 m2/s). However, after implementing a correction for the difference in the compositions, the rate constant is 13.2 × 10−18 m2/s for the fiber, and 29.4 × 10−18 m2/s for SiCN. The lower oxidation rate of the fiber is ascribed to the lower carbon content in the fiber material.

Notes: We show that the rheology of a silazane-based precursor for a silicon carbonitride ceramic can be radically altered by reacting it with an alkoxide precursor. This modified precursor can be drawn into fibers by a simple process. The fiber-friendly rheology of the modified precursor is ascribed to the creation of linear polymer chains by a reaction between silazanes and alkoxides. The ceramic fibers made by this process have excellent mechanical properties, reaching tensile strengths of 2.8 GPa. Their structure is amorphous.

Notes: The synthesis, characterization, and bulk and lattice thermal expansions of a series of compounds with general composition Ce1–xYxO2–x/2 (0.0 ≤x≤ 1.0) are reported. The XRD pattern of each product was refined to learn the solid solubility limit and the homogeneity range. The solid solubility limit of YO1.5 in CeO2 lattice, under the conditions of slow cooling from 1400°C, is represented as Ce0.55Y0.45O1.775 (i.e., 45 mol% of YO1.5). The subsequent compositions were biphase. There was no solubility of CeO2 into the lattice of YO1.5. The bulk thermal expansion measurements from ambient to 1123 K, as investigated using a dilatometer, revealed that the αl (293–1123 K) values, within the homogeneity range, decreased on increased Y3+ content. A similar trend was observed for average lattice thermal expansion coefficient, αa (293–1473 K), as investigated using high-temperature XRD. No ordered phases were obtained in this system under the used conditions. These studies on Ce1–xYxO2–x/2 (0.0 ≤x≤ 1.0) system can be used to simulate the phase relation and thermal expansion behavior of Pu1–xYxO2–x/2 (0.0 ≤x≤ 1.0), because CeO2 is widely used as a surrogate material for PuO2.
