Description: The low solubility of fullerenes in aqueous solution limits their applications in biology. By appropriate substitution, the fullerenes can be transformed into stabilized anions that are water soluble and can form large aggregated structures. A laser light scattering study of the association behavior of the potassium salt of pentaphenyl fullerene (Ph5C60K) in water revealed that the hydrocarbon anions Ph5C60- associate into bilayers, forming stable spherical vesicles with an average hydrodynamic radius and a radius of gyration of about 17 nanometers at a very low critical aggregation concentration of less than 10(-7) moles per liter. The average aggregation number of associated particles in these large spherical vesicles is about 1.2 x 10(4).〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Zhou, S -- Burger, C -- Chu, B -- Sawamura, M -- Nagahama, N -- Toganoh, M -- Hackler, U E -- Isobe, H -- Nakamura, E -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2001 Mar 9;291(5510):1944-7.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Chemistry, State University of New York, Stony Brook, NY 11794, USA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/11239150" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Diatoms are unicellular algae with plastids acquired by secondary endosymbiosis. They are responsible for approximately 20% of global carbon fixation. We report the 34 million-base pair draft nuclear genome of the marine diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana and its 129 thousand-base pair plastid and 44 thousand-base pair mitochondrial genomes. Sequence and optical restriction mapping revealed 24 diploid nuclear chromosomes. We identified novel genes for silicic acid transport and formation of silica-based cell walls, high-affinity iron uptake, biosynthetic enzymes for several types of polyunsaturated fatty acids, use of a range of nitrogenous compounds, and a complete urea cycle, all attributes that allow diatoms to prosper in aquatic environments.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Armbrust, E Virginia -- Berges, John A -- Bowler, Chris -- Green, Beverley R -- Martinez, Diego -- Putnam, Nicholas H -- Zhou, Shiguo -- Allen, Andrew E -- Apt, Kirk E -- Bechner, Michael -- Brzezinski, Mark A -- Chaal, Balbir K -- Chiovitti, Anthony -- Davis, Aubrey K -- Demarest, Mark S -- Detter, J Chris -- Glavina, Tijana -- Goodstein, David -- Hadi, Masood Z -- Hellsten, Uffe -- Hildebrand, Mark -- Jenkins, Bethany D -- Jurka, Jerzy -- Kapitonov, Vladimir V -- Kroger, Nils -- Lau, Winnie W Y -- Lane, Todd W -- Larimer, Frank W -- Lippmeier, J Casey -- Lucas, Susan -- Medina, Monica -- Montsant, Anton -- Obornik, Miroslav -- Parker, Micaela Schnitzler -- Palenik, Brian -- Pazour, Gregory J -- Richardson, Paul M -- Rynearson, Tatiana A -- Saito, Mak A -- Schwartz, David C -- Thamatrakoln, Kimberlee -- Valentin, Klaus -- Vardi, Assaf -- Wilkerson, Frances P -- Rokhsar, Daniel S -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2004 Oct 1;306(5693):79-86.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉School of Oceanography, University of Washington, Seattle, WA 98195, USA. armbrust@ocean.washington.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15459382" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: The magneto-optical and optical properties of GdFe single layer films, which are covered with a thin Si3N4 layer, were studied in the visible wavelength region. A Kerr rotation peak and a reflectivity drop were observed near 4.1 eV in GdFe alloyed films and attributed to the Gd element. Compared with the single thick GdFe film, the Kerr effect of SiN/GdFe bilayers was enhanced, due to the optical interference between Si3N4 and GdFe. The Kerr rotation of GdFe films showed a nonlinear function of the compositions in the whole measured wavelength range. Magneto-optical measurements directly evidence the spin–flip in the GdFe films as the Gd content increased from 20.7 to 24.2 at. %, which showed advantages over conventional magnetometry. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Macroscopic domain structures have been realized in wedged-permalloy (Py)/uniform-FeMn bilayers during magnetization reversal. When the exchange anisotropy is established perpendicular or parallel to the wedge direction, two macroscopic domains are observed. Separating these domains are a 180° wall in the perpendicular geometry and an intermediate band containing large density of stripe-type microdomains in the parallel geometry. While the exchange field remains practically the same in both geometries, the coercivity and squareness of the loop are much less in the parallel geometry. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A paramagnetic–ferromagnetic transition has been observed in detail by electron-spin resonance (ESR) around the Curie temperature in a series of Nd0.7(Ca, Sr, Ba)0.3MnO3 with a fixed A-site mean radius 〈rA〉=1.21 Å. As A-site cation disorder σ2 increases, the ESR linewidth increases and the activation energy obtained from the ESR decreases, suggesting an increase of the local lattice distortions and a weakening of the ferromagnetic correlations with increasing σ2. ESR signals reveal that the A-site cation disorder causes the local microscopic inhomogeneity of the Mn oxidation state, which leads to the broad paramagnetic–ferromagnetic transition. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: For sputtered Co57Mn43/Si film samples with different ferromagnetic thickness, the spectra of the complex magneto-optical polar Kerr rotation and optical constants were ex-situ measured. For 5 nm-thick Co57Mn43 film, the Kerr rotation around 4.3 eV was enhanced by a factor of about 10 times with lower loss of the signal intensity as compared to the thick film. Numerical calculations show that the enhancement effect is attributed to an interplay between optical properties of Co57Mn43 and substrate Si that has a strong interband transition (E2) near 4.3 eV. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Due to a weaker exchange coupling, the coercivity in permalloy/Cr82Al18 bilayers of thicknesses tFM and tAF, respectively, has been found to vary as 1/tFM3/2 at room temperature, a behavior previously only observed at low temperatures. At room temperature, the exchange field decreases when tAF is less than 40 nm and vanishes at 25 nm. Switching in wedged-permalloy/Cr82Al18 bilayers consists of two macroscopic domains with one domain wall moving along the wedge direction. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract: Properties of single- Λ and double- Λ hypernuclei for even-N Ca isotopes ranging from the proton dripline to the neutron dripline are studied using the relativistic continuum Hartree-Bogoliubov theory with a zero-range pairing interaction. Compared with ordinary nuclei, the addition of one or two Λ-hyperons lowers the Fermi level. The predicted neutron dripline nuclei are, respectively, 75 ΛCa and 76 2ΛCa, as the additional attractive force provided by the Λ-N interaction shifts nuclei from outside to inside the dripline. Therefore, the last bound hypernuclei have two more neutrons than the corresponding ordinary nuclei. Based on the analysis of two-neutron separation energies, neutron single-particle energy levels, the contribution of continuum and nucleon density distribution, giant halo phenomena due to the pairing correlation, and the contribution from the continuum are suggested to exist in Ca hypernuclei similar to those that appear in ordinary Ca isotopes.
