    Notes: The current and plasma flows driven by ponderomotive forces are calculated for tokamak plasmas, using a kinetic code in the Alfvén range of frequencies. The rf (radio frequency) ponderomotive force is expressed as a sum of a gradient part and of a wave momentum transfer force, which is proportional to wave dissipation (electron Landau damping and transit time magnetic pumping). Finally, the rf force is balanced by the viscous force in the fluid momentum response to the rf fields in the plasma. The relative magnitudes of the different forces for kinetic and global Alfvén waves with low phase velocities are explicitly calculated. It is shown that, dissipating in electrons, Alfvén waves can drive ion flow via the gradient force, which is dominated in m=0-sideband harmonic resonance induced by toroidal mode coupling. Estimates of power requirements to drive substantial poloidal flow in the Tokamak Chauffage Alfvén wave heating experiment in Brazil (TCABR) [L. Ruchko, M. C. Andrade, R. M. O. Galva˜o, Nucl. Fusion 30, 503 (1996)] are made. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Understanding how exogenous and endogenous factors control the distribution, production and mortality of fine roots is fundamental to assessing the implications of global change, yet our knowledge of control over fine root dynamics remains rudimentary. To improve understanding of these processes, the present study developed regression relationships between environmental variables and fine root dynamics within a northern hardwood forest in New Hampshire, USA, which was experimentally manipulated with a snow removal treatment. Fine roots (〈 1 mm diameter) were observed using minirhizotrons for 2 years in sugar maple and yellow birch stands and analyzed in relation to temperature, water and nutrient availability. Fine root dynamics at this site fluctuated seasonally, with growth and mortality peaking during warmer months. Monthly fine root production was strongly associated with mean monthly air temperature and neither soil moisture nor nutrient availability added additional predictive power to this relationship. This relationship exhibited a seasonal temperature hysteresis, which was altered by snow removal treatment. These results suggest that both exogenous and endogenous cues may be important in controlling fine root growth in this system. Proportional fine root mortality was directly associated with mean monthly soil temperature, and proportional fine root mortality during the over-winter interval was strongly related to whether the soil froze. The strong relationship between fine root production and air temperature reported herein contrasts with findings from some hardwood forest sites and indicates that controls on fine root dynamics vary geographically. Future research must more clearly distinguish between endogenous and exogenous control over fine root dynamics in various ecosystems.

    Notes: Nitrogen retention in soil organic matter (SOM) is a key process influencing the accumulation and loss of N in forest ecosystems, but the rates and mechanisms of inorganic N retention in soils are not well understood. The primary objectives of this study were to compare ammonium (NH4+), nitrite (NO2−), and nitrate (NO3−) immobilization among soils developed under different tree species in the Catskill Mountains of New York State, and to determine the relative roles of biotic or abiotic processes in soil N retention. A laboratory experiment was performed, where 15N was added as NH4+, NO2−, or NO3− to live and mercury-treated O horizon soils from three tree species (American beech, northern red oak, sugar maple), and 15N recoveries were determined in the SOM pool. Mercuric chloride was used to treat soils as this chemical inhibits microbial metabolism without significantly altering the chemistry of SOM. The recovery of 15N in SOM was almost always greater for NH4+ (mean 20%) and NO2− (47%) than for NO3− (10%). Ammonium immobilization occurred primarily by biotic processes, with mean recoveries in live soils increasing from 9% at 15 min to 53% after 28 days of incubation. The incorporation of NO2− into SOM occurred rapidly (〈15 min) via abiotic processes. Abiotic immobilization of NO2− (mean recovery 58%) was significantly greater than abiotic immobilization of NH4+ (7%) or NO3− (7%). The incorporation of NO2− into SOM did not vary significantly among tree species, so this mechanism likely does not contribute to differences in soil NO3− dynamics among species. As over 30% of the 15NO2− label was recovered in SOM within 15 min in live soils, and the products of NO2− incorporation into SOM remained relatively stable throughout the 28-day incubation, our results suggest that NO2− incorporation into SOM may be an important mechanism of N retention in forest soils. The importance of NO2− immobilization for N retention in field soils, however, will depend on the competition between incorporation into SOM and nitrification for transiently available NO2−. Further research is required to determine the importance of this process in field environments.

    Notes: The growth and chemical composition of most plants are influenced by elevated CO2, but accompanying effects on soil organic matter pools and mineralization are less clearly defined, partly because of the short-term nature of most studies. Herein we describe soil properties from a naturally occurring cold CO2 spring (Hakanoa) in Northland, New Zealand, at which the surrounding vegetation has been exposed to elevated CO2 for at least several decades. The mean annual temperature at this site is ≈ 15.5 °C and rainfall ≈ 1550 mm. The site was unfertilized and ungrazed, with a vegetation of mainly C3 and C4 grasses, and had moderate levels of ‘available’ P. Two soils were present − a gley soil and an organic soil – but only the gley soil is examined here. Average atmospheric CO2 concentrations at 17 sampling locations in the gley soil area ranged from 372 to 670 ppmv.In samples at 0–5 cm depth, pH averaged 5.4; average values for organic C were 150 g, total N 11 g, microbial C 3.50 g, and microbial N 0.65 g kg−1, respectively. Under standardized moisture conditions at 25 °C, average rates of CO2-C production (7–14 days) were 5.4 mg kg−1 h−1 and of net mineral-N production (14 −42 days) 0.40 mg kg−1 h−1. These properties were all correlated positively and significantly (P 〈 0.10) with atmospheric CO2 concentrations, but not with soil moisture (except for CO2-C production) or with clay content; they were, however, correlated negatively and mainly significantly with soil pH. In spite of uncertainties associated with the uncontrolled environment of naturally occurring springs, we conclude that storage of C and N can increase under prolonged exposure to elevated CO2, and may include an appreciable labile fraction in mineral soil with an adequate nutrient supply.

    Notes: Abstract: Serum CrossLaps is a new assay for measuring carboxy-terminal collagen crosslinks (CTX) in serum. This measurement is reported to be more specific to bone resorption than other measurements. However, the utility of this and other markers in monitoring patients on antiresorptive therapy depends on how often changes anticipated with therapy exceed changes attributable to random variability. In a study where subjects received either placebo or pamidronate, we calculated the minimum significant change (MSC), that is, the change that was sufficiently large that it was unlikely to be due to spontaneous variability. We also examined the changes in markers of bone turnover in subjects treated with pamidronate (APD) (30 mg I.V. in 500 ml D5W over 4 hours) to see how often observed changes in turnover after treatment exceeded the MSC. The MSC for serum CTX was 30.2%, and was significantly (P 〈 0.05) lower than the MSC for urinary NTX (54.0%), and not significantly different from the MSC of urinary DPD (20.6%). Ninety percent of subjects treated with APD had a decline in serum CTX that exceeded the MSC, compared with 74% for bone-specific alkaline phophatase (BSAP), 57% for urinary N-telopeptide cross-links (NTX), and 48% for free deoxypyridinoline. Changes in serum CTX correlated reasonably well with changes in spine BMD after 2 years (r = 0.47), but this correlation did not quite reach statistical significance because of the small number of subjects. In conclusion, the serum CTX assay shows greater utility for assessing efficacy of antiresorptive treatment than some previously described markers.

    Notes: Abstract We show that Dirac magnetic monopoles do not satisfy the orientationentanglement (OE) relation and do not return to their initial state after a 4πrotation. This is done in both the formalism using Dirac strings of singularitiesand in the fiber bundle formalism. In the latter we connect the OE relation tothe first homotopy group of the gauge group. We hypothesize that failure tosatisfy the OE relation is the reason Dirac magnetic monopoles have neverbeen seen.

    Notes: Abstract Allozyme electrophoresis of four sibling parthenogenetic Caucasian rock lizards Darevskia unisexualis, D.uzzelli, D.sapphirina, and D.bendimahiensis found seven clones and five variable loci. The data supported the hypothesis that D.raddei and D.valentini are the parental species of all four parthenogens. Variation patterns in Darevskia were summarized. Species that originated from a single F1 typically consisted of one widespread clone with a few rare clones. Species with multiple origins displayed variation only slightly higher than species with a single origin. This is contrary to other genera of parthenogenetic lizards, in which cases massive clonal variations were observed.
