Description / Table of Contents: Abstract. Application programming interfaces (API) for database systems should preserve both the strengths of the database management system and of the programming languages. In addition to this general objective, innovative concepts of both domains as well as requirements of advanced application areas like CAD and software development must be observed. Our approach of generated call-level-interfaces is supposed to contribute to bringing closer together the type systems of object-relational database systems and object-oriented programming languages. Besides generating interfaces it supports application-specific configuration for optimization purposes. In this article, we describe generation/configuration of (generated) call-level-interfaces as well as their exploitation. Furthermore, we give some empirical results, showing possible performance gains. The latter can be achieved by application-specific use of early bindings (of data manipulation operations) as well as of pointer swizzling and prefetching mechanisms.
Notes: Zusammenfassung.

Notes: To strengthen their position in today's highly-competitive and fast-paced business environment, supplier firms often engage in relationships with their customers. Recent advances in information technology offer new ways of managing inter-organizational relationships. In this paper, a model conceptualizing the impact of information technology deployment on inter-organizational buyer-seller relationships is developed. Using an empirical study of 61 German firms engaged in customer-supplier relationships, this paper also gives some empirical evidence for the developed framework. With regard to relationship management, intra- and inter-organizational information technology deployment has different effects on relationship atmosphere and on the relationship's value creation. The findings give new insight into the role of information technology in value-creation in business-to-business relationships. Managerial implications and future research questions in this area are also discussed.

Notes: Suppliers do not only maintain relationships with customers for the customers' benefits but also for their own sake. Various important value-creating functions of business relationships with customers have been identified in the past. However, the preconditions of this inter-organizational value-creation have not been addressed in depth. Drawing upon a database of over 200 customer-supplier relationships, adaptations, trust and commitment are identified as key drivers for value creation. The results of this study have considerable consequences for the management of inter-organizational relationships and networks regarding the process of how value could be created in business markets.

Notes: Many studies have shown that market orientation is important for firms because it has a positive impact on performance. However, several studies have indicated that the relation between a firm's market orientation and its success is sometimes weak and that moderating variables need to be considered at least under certain circumstances. As such the overall message from the market orientation studies is not clear. The usefulness of the market orientation concept must also be questioned when looking at the realities of business markets. In most if not all cases the firms' "surroundings" should be seen as a network of inter-organizational relationships rather than an anonymous market. Therefore, in this paper the notion of market orientation is explored with particular focus on inter-organizational relationships. Hereby, it is argued that the relationships are important and that the overall market orientation of firms needs to be translated to a relationship level in order to be effective. It is further argued that market orientation on a relationship level can be interpreted in terms of a firm's employed resources and executed activities dedicated to relational exchange processes.

Notes: Argues that the ability of a firm to develop and manage relations with key suppliers, customers and other organizations and to deal effectively with the interactions among these relations is a core competence of a firm - one that has a direct bearing on a firm's competitive strength and performance. This is referred to as a firm's network competence. In the first part of the paper work in Germany that has led to the development and calibration of a scale to measure a firm's network competencies is described. In the second part the results of preliminary studies designed to develop and test the validity of the scale in an English-speaking context are reported. The results show that the measurement of network competence is valid and that the same relations between network competence and performance measures found in the German research hold. It is further shown that the measure of network competence is empirically and conceptually distinct to that of the market orientation scale.

Notes: The knowledge of the molecular structure of LDL, a large lipoprotein complex, is of great interest for medical investigations. Currently available LDL crystals do not diffract to high resolution and do not allow the application of standard crystallographic techniques. Additional difficulties arise because of a very dense crystal packing and the presence of several components with quite different mean densities. Several ab initio phasing methods previously reported by the authors have been successfully applied to find a crystallographic image of LDL at a resolution of 27 Å. The most promising results have been obtained using direct phasing with a connectivity analysis of the electron-density maps. The current image makes it possible to discern a single particle covered by a layer of relatively high density that is asymmetrically distributed on the particle surface. It shows a partition of high and low densities inside the particle and, in particular, strips of varying density in the lipid core.
