Notes: A stability theorem for general quasi-linear symmetric hyperbolic systems (not necessarily conservation laws) is proved in this work. The key assumption is the "stability eigenvalue condition," which requires all the eigenvalues of the constant coefficient system symbol to have negative real part for nonzero Fourier frequency, decaying no faster than |ω|2 when |ω|→0. The decay of the solution to zero, as time grows to infinity, is proved when the space dimension is bigger than or equal to 3. As an application of the general theorem, stability is proved for the equations describing relativistic dissipative fluids. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The reliability of density functional theory and other electronic structure methods is examined for anharmonicities and spectroscopic constants of the ground electronic states of several diatomic molecules. The equilibrium bond length re, harmonic vibrational frequency ωe, vibrational anharmonicity ωexe, rotational constant Be, centrifugal distortion constant D¯e, and vibration-rotation interaction constant αe have been obtained theoretically for BF, CO, N2, CH+, and H2. Predictions using Hartree–Fock, coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD), coupled cluster singles and doubles with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)], and various density functional methods (S-VWN, BLYP, and B3LYP) have been made using the 6-31G*, aug-cc-pVDZ, and aug-cc-pVTZ basis sets and compared to experimental values. Density functional theory predictions of the spectroscopic constants are reliable (particularly for B3LYP) and often perform as well as the more expensive CCSD and CCSD(T) estimates. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This paper analyzes stock returns and volatility relations between the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) and the global market as represented by stock markets in the US, the UK, Japan and Germany. Results from monthly data and multivariate cointegration tests suggest that the ISE became significantly integrated in the global market only in the period following market liberalization in late 1989. We also find evidence based on GARCH estimations that capital liberalization actually mitigated, rather than intensified, volatility in the ISE. Our results further suggest that the Asian crisis in mid-1997 and the consequent Russian economic meltdown in mid-1998 are partly responsible for the recent excessive volatility in the Turkish market. The results also identify the US and the UK markets as dominate sources of volatility spillovers for the ISE, even in the period following the Asian-Russian crises. Consequently, it appears that the two matured markets of the US and the UK shoulder significant responsibility for the stability and financial health of smaller emerging markets like the ISE.

Notes: The metal working fluid industry accounts for approximately 5 per cent of the total world market for lubricant. Cutting fluids are formulated to fulfil one or more different functions. It is becoming increasingly apparent that to provide additions friendly for environment and low costs. This paper studies high performance mixture of anionic/nonionic polymeric surfactants as an additive for metal working fluid, thus the mixture has poly functions such as anticorrosion and emulsifier. The surface tensions of aqueous solutions of anionic/nonionic mixtures were measured as a function of nonionic concentration at 40°C with constant anionic concentration. The surface excesses concentrations, mole fractions, and interaction parameters of binary polymeric mixtures were calculated. Moreover, the critical micelle concentration and adsorption of ANO/ETH mixture on solutions and steel surface were determined. These parameters confirm the synergistic action of ANO/ETH polymeric surfactants for micellization and adsorption at different interfaces.

Notes: A chromium-silicon carbide electrodeposited composite coatings were obtained by suspending silicon carbide (SiC) particles in a trivalent chromium plating solution. This composite was improved by adding the synthesized 1-ethyl-1-cetyl-2-sulfonate-4(hydroxy ethyl)-piprazine (A16) as dispersing agent for SiC. The adsorption of A16 on SiC was determined. The relation between the zeta potential and codeposition of SiC was investigated by studying the effect of the additive (A16) concentration on mobility (dispersion) and the zeta potential of SiC. The results show that the zeta potential of SiC is more positive at critical micelle concentration of the additive and stimulation results from the adsorption of A16 on the SiC particles. Morphology resistance of the coating was determined and compared with free chromium deposits. These results were discussed according to the obtained adsorption isotherm of the additive.

Notes: This paper explores the impact of both the increase in foreign direct investment inflows and the increase in information and communication technology infrastructure investments on exporting in ASEAN nations (the trade bloc of which is known as AFTA) compared with two other major trade blocs: CEFTA and LAIA. The analyses are based on data from a cross section of countries (26 emerging markets from three trade blocs) over time (from 1995 to 2000). The results show that the increase of investments in ICT infrastructure yields positive and significant returns in the national exporting level only for the ASEAN/AFTA and CEFTA sample. Interestingly, the impact of the increase of FDI inflows on export is significant only in the CEFTA and LAIA samples. These results are discussed in the light of the different economic experiences of these trade blocs, noting that variations are typically present between individual countries. Overall, reflecting the results from this study, research concerned with the determinants of national exporting level should be conducted independently, along with regional and national characteristics.

Notes: This study investigates the role of race, family background and education in earnings inequality between whites and the African descendent population in Brazil. It uses quantile Mincer earnings regressions to go beyond the usual decomposition of average earnings gaps. Differences in human capital, including parental education and education quality, and in its returns, account for most but not all of the racial earnings gaps. There appears to be greater pay discrimination at the higher salary jobs for any skill level. Returns to education vary with the gradient of skin color. While returns are similar for white and mixed race workers at the top of the adjusted wage scale, mixed race workers at the bottom are rewarded similar to blacks. Thus, while equalizing access to quality education is key to reduce racial earnings inequality in Brazil, specific policies are also needed to facilitate equal access of non-whites to good quality jobs.

Notes: Discusses the role of women in management in the Nigerian Civil Service (NCS). The number of men in management in the NCS far exceeds the number of women. Women also function in a Nigerian society permeated by gender stereotypes. Tries to answer the question: "Why is a woman less likely to become a senior manager in the NCS?" Data were gathered from a selection of male and female managers who have the required experience and knowledge of women issues. The findings show that the debate about women's roles as managers has prompted a reassessment of the traditional negative stereotype of women as managers. Although women are being given some managerial opportunities, they are severely discriminated against. Thus the range of opportunities available to women is limited and the prospect of a woman being a senior manager is less favourable than for a man. Concludes that women are likely to bring a distinct style of management to the service and the NCS would benefit from more integration of women managers.
