Description: A reconnaissance study of alkenone stratigraphy for the past 35 m.y. in the northern South China Sea (SCS) using sediments from Sites 1147 and 1148 of Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 184 has been completed. Alkenones were not detected in sediment samples older than ~31 Ma. However, C37:2 appeared in the sedimentary record between ~8 and 31 Ma and both C37:2 and C37:3 were present between 0 and 8 Ma. These changes in alkenone occurrences may signal a response to global-scale Neogene cooling as well as to monsoon intensification and sea level changes over time as a result of Himalayan uplift and the opening of the SCS. Alternatively, they may be related to an evolutionary record of the development of temperature control on alkenone production in coccolithophores. The Uk'37 index for 0-8 Ma produces sea-surface temperatures (SST) of 19°-26°C, which are in the range of previously determined glacial-interglacial values for the northern SCS. Before the late Pleistocene (~1.2 Ma), the SST range is between 23° and 26°C with less variation. This change in variability may signify the early stage of intensified winter monsoons where cold wind and waters from the north may not yet have had a significant effect on SST or it may be the evolutionary link between the early development of unsaturated alkenones in coccolithophores and modern temperature control of alkenone production. We believe a long-term alkenone record is useful for further understanding of global-scale neogene cooling, the development of the East Asian monsoon system, and the evolutionary development of temperature control on alkenone unsaturation. Our data indicate that a high-resolution Uk'37 record for at least the last ~8 Ma is feasible for the northern SCS.

Notes: The notion of consumer sovereignty is not a new concept. However to effectively use it as a tool to improve food hygiene standards, proprietors of eating-places must know what customers look for to assess those standards. It is also important that customers demonstrate their unwillingness to buy from unhygienic premises. This article summarises research, using the "Delphi Technique", backed up by semi-structured interviews which has established a body of new knowledge about the subject. Conclusions are drawn about the relevance of food hygiene standards to running an effective business and the need for a public education campaign. The results also challenge current views about the importance of food hygiene standards to customers.

Notes: Transformation of Streptococcus gordonii DL1 by free DNA was studied in human saliva. Competent S. gordonii could be transformed in vitro with plasmid DNA that had been taken into the human mouth. Transformation also occurred with a plasmid that cannot replicate in S. gordonii, but that has a region of chromosomal homology, by integration into the bacterial chromosome, although linearised plasmid DNA gave no transformants. Linear chromosomal DNA fragments did however transform S. gordonii/Tn916 efficiently in saliva when regions of homology with the recipient chromosome flanked the marker gene. These findings are discussed in relation to the potential for acquisition of DNA sequences, including genetically modified DNA, by gut and oral bacteria.

Notes: An integration vector was constructed to allow introduction of the gfp gene into the chromosomes of Gram-positive bacteria. Integration depends on homologous recombination between a short 458-nt sequence of the tet(M) gene in the vector and a copy of Tn916 in the host chromosome. Strains of Lactococcus lactis IL1403, Enterococcus faecalis JH2-SS, and Streptococcus gordonii DL1 stably marked with single chromosomal copies of the gfp were readily visualised by epifluorescence microscopy. The marked L. lactis strain survived poorly in a continuous culture system inoculated with human faecal flora, while the laboratory E. faecalis strain was lost at approximately the dilution rate of the fermenter.

Notes: [Auszug] About 30% of human tumours carry ras gene mutations. Of the three genes in this family (composed of K-ras, N-ras and H-ras), K-ras is the most frequently mutated member in human tumours, including adenocarcinomas of the pancreas (∼70–90% incidence), colon (∼50%) and lung ...

Notes: The results of a study on the thermal shock behavior of a high-temperature refractory ceramic that is used as a furnace liner in the melting of steels are presented in this paper. The experimental studies show that thermal shock damage initiates by edge cracking after the first shock cycle. Subsequent subcritical crack growth occurs by the incremental extension of dominant cracks until catastrophic failure occurs. The observations of the crack profiles also reveal the formation of viscoelastic bridges that promote crack-tip shielding/toughening via crack bridging. Following a brief discussion of the respective mechanisms of fracture and thermal shock damage at different temperatures and temperature ranges, the implications of the results are discussed for refractory ceramics that are toughened by viscoelastic crack bridging.

Notes: A complete analysis of an English sentence includes syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic components. Presupposition belongs to the pragmatic component. How to determine the presuppositions of multiple-clause sentences has been the focus of much work. Projection of clausal presuppositions is one method to determine the presuppositions of multiple-clause sentences. In this paper we present a new approach to the projection problem. Drawing heavily on the theoretical techniques originating with Montague semantics, our system maps sentences of a category-based grammar into a set of expressions of intensional logic: one expression corresponding to the literal interpretation of the sentence and the remaining expressions corresponding to the presuppositions of the sentence. The new approach correctly predicts the presuppositions of a larger range of multiple-clause sentences than previous projection approaches.

Notes: SLICE™ (active ingredient 0.2% emamectin benzoate (EMB)), a feed premix developed by Schering-Plough Animal Health for the control of sea lice on cultured salmonids, is registered for use in several countries and is being prescribed on an emergency basis in Canada and the United States. The concentration of EMB in feed administered to farmed salmon ranges from 1 to 25 μg g−1. To determine the acute toxicity of the compound to juvenile and adult American lobster (Homarus americanus), commercial salmon feed was coated with SLICE™ at a range of concentrations and provided to the animals for 7 d in the laboratory. The LC50 is estimated to be 644 μg g−1 (95% CI=428, 1275) for adult lobsters and 〉589 μg g−1 for stage V and VI juvenile lobsters. The consumption of medicated pellets by adult lobsters decreased significantly with increasing concentration of EMB. Adult lobsters that died during the study had a significantly greater concentration of emamectin B1a in their muscle tissue than those that survived. These results support the conclusion that salmon feed medicated with EMB at the concentrations used by the aquaculture industry is unlikely to pose an acute lethal threat to adult and small juvenile American lobsters.

Notes: This article examines how a research partnership between a university-based research centre and a regional health authority operated as a context for promoting and examining continuous learning in the workplace. The article identifies and explores the issues and questions that emerged in the effort to establish a stable and supportive research environment that made use of others' talents and insights while attempting to flatten knowledge bases and to sustain critical dialogue. The article concludes that while the research partnership between university and workplace can operate effectively, those embarking on such partnerships might well consider the following questions. How does one cultivate shared ownership? How does one create and sustain communities of inquiry? How does one work difference? How does one maintain a sense of partnership beyond individual projects?
