Notes: Line-oriented two-dimensional grammars (LOTDGs), region-oriented two-dimensional grammars (ROTDGs) and parallel productions are introduced. The relationships between LOTDGs and ROTDGs are stated. Examples of LOTDGS for generating all possible 45° right-angled triangles, all possible squares, all possible 45° isosceles trapezoids, and all possible 45° parallelograms using parallel productions are presented. A new concise representation of a derivation chain is also introduced and illustrated by examples. LOTDGs and ROTDGs are compared. Generally speaking, LOTDGs require less terminal variables and non-terminal variables, require less storage space, and require less derivation steps. Seven challenging problems for future research are also included. In addition, parallel production is an effective tool to model parallel computers as well as parallel processing. The results have useful applications in robot vision interpretation, robot pictorial communication, artificial intelligence, visual languages, software engineering, medical expert systems, and fuzzy logic functions.

Notes: Pictures are natural and effective means of communication among people, computers, and robotics. A pictorial database is a collection of sharable pictorial data encoded in various formats. During the past several years, pictorial databases have attracted growing attention as an important component in building pictorial information systems as well as intelligent information systems. Eight research tasks are presented. They are comparing the numerical and the linguistic variable approaches, examining new linguistic hedges, studying the similarity of various similarity measures, investigating pictorial data compression techniques, performing pictorial data compression using array grammars, applying the entity-relationship (ER) model to picture description; further investigating the relationship hierarchy for picture representation using ER diagrams, and extracting pictorial knowledge from pictorial databases. The research results may have a major impact on the development of object-oriented pictorial databases.

Notes: The grade of membership function for fuzzy monotone functions is defined and investigated. An algorithm for finding the membership value is presented. A minterm even function and minterm odd function are defined and studied. It is found that these two functions are the two most alternation functions. The relationships with threshold functions are also presented. In addition, three ways to implement a fuzzy monotone increasing function are investigated. Applications to function representation, data compression and error detection are illustrated. The results have useful applications in fuzzy logic, expert systems, fuzzy expert systems, and also management of uncertainty.

Notes: Human beings are highly visual creatures. The neural nets in our brains are good at recognizing and retrieving visual patterns. An interesting aspect of human vision is that a neural net may be recognizing a pattern that does not exist. In this paper, a triangle illusion with explanations is presented.

Notes: Four approaches (relational, network, hierarchical, entity-relationship) to integrated-circuit chip database design are presented with illustrative examples. Integrated-circuit chip databases appear to be a fertile field for further study. In addition, the study of integrated-circuit chip databases may contribute to finding more effective and more efficient ways to design large-scale digital systems, computers, and intelligent robots.

Notes: A fuzzy symmetric threshold (ST) function is defined to be a fuzzy set over the set of functions. All ST functions have full memberships in this fuzzy set. For n variables, there are (2n+2) ST functions. A distance measure between a nonsymmetric threshold function and the set of all ST functions is defined and investigated. An explicit expression for the membership function of a fuzzy ST function is defined through the use of this distance measure. An algorithm for obtaining this distance measure is presented with illustrative examples. It is also shown that any function and its complement always have the same grade of membership in the class of fuzzy ST functions. Applications to concise function representation and simple function implementation are also presented with examples. In addition, most inseparable unsymmetric functions are defined and investigated. Fuzzy ST functions are relevant to the development of practical applications of fuzzy methods and might contribute to the state of the art in the implementations of fuzzy methods in the areas requiring utilization of ST functions.

Notes: Boolean algebra, Karnaugh map method and Quine-McClusky algorithm are usually the tools used for minimizing logic functions using gates. However, with the advent of IC chips, the criteria for implementing a low-cost circuit have been changed from logic gate reduction to IC chip reduction. In this paper, the IC chip reduction problem is systematically analyzed and illustrated by examples. More specifically, the direct mapping method, the IC chip diagram, the IC chip usage table, the reduced IC chip usage table and the reduced IC chip diagram are created and used for IC chip reduction. The reduction process is illustrated step by step with examples. In addition, six substitution rules for reducing the IC chip usage table are also presented. The IC chip reduction problem is both theoretically challenging and practically useful. The results may have useful applications in picture description reduction, picture semantic network reduction as well as in other related areas. It illustrates the effectiveness of a cybernetic approach.

Notes: Abstract The current study confirmed earlier conclusions regarding differential ozone (O3) tolerances of two soybean cultivars, Essex and Forrest, and evaluated antioxidant enzyme activities of these two varieties based on their performance under environmentally relevant, elevated O3 conditions. The experiment was conducted in open-top chambers in the field during the 1994 and 1995 growing seasons. Exposure of plants to moderately high O3 levels (62.9 nl l−1 air, 2-year seasonal average) caused chlorophyll loss and increased membrane permeability when compared to control plants grown in charcoal filtered air (24.2 nl l−1 air). The other effects of O3 treatment were decrease in seed yield, loss of total sulfhydryl groups, reduction of soluble protein content, and increase in guaiacol peroxidase activity in leaves of both cultivars. The O3-induced increase in guaiacol peroxidase activity was much smaller in cv. Essex leaflets. Cv. Essex had less leaf oxidative damage and smaller reduction in seed yield than cv. Forrest under elevated O3 conditions. During ozonation, mature leaflets of the more O3 tolerant cv. Essex had higher levels of glutathione reductase (30%), ascorbate peroxidase (13%), and superoxide dismutase (45%) activity than did mature leaflets of cv. Forrest. Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase, which represented 95% of total superoxide dismutase activity in the two cultivars, appeared to be increased by O3 exposure in the leaflets of O3 tolerant cv. Essex but not in those of cv. Forrest. Cytosolic ascorbate peroxidase activity was also higher in leaflets of cv. Essex than in cv. Forrest regardless of O3 level. Stromal ascorbate peroxidase and Mn-superoxide dismutase activity did not appear to be involved in the O3 tolerance of the two soybean cultivars.
