    Notes: The Saccharomyces cerevisiae VPS23 (STP22) gene is implicated in the control of vesicle movement and quality of plasma membrane proteins. VPS23 mutants have defects either in removing defective membrane proteins such as α-mating factor receptor and arginine permease. The human ortholog TSG101 and its variants, isolated from tumor cells, do not substitute VPS23 in its ability to rescue the phenotype of defective plasma membrane proteins.

    Notes: This research examines and compares perceptions held by laypeople and ecologists about risks to ecosystems, particularly risk from global climate change (GCC). A survey elicited perceptions of 31 risk characteristics for 13 GCC and 12 non-GCC risks to ecosystems. Factor analysis was used to examine the structure of layperson and expert risk perceptions. Both experts and laypeople tend to perceive GCC risks to ecosystems as less avoidable and more acceptable than risks from other causes. Compared to laypeople's perceptions, though, experts perceived GCC risks to have slightly lower impacts, be less avoidable, more acceptable, and less understandable than non-GCC risks to ecosystems. These findings may help guide efforts to communicate with laypeople about ecological risks from climate change.

    Notes: The growth, survival and trypsin, lipase and amylase activities of red drum larvae were measured in two experiments. For the first trial, a group was fed live prey only (L) and another group was fed a combination of a microparticulate diet (MPD) and live food (L-MP). For the second growth trial a group fed the MPD only (MP) and a starvation group (ST) were examined in addition to the L and L-MP treatments. Enzyme activities of live prey were measured to estimate their possible contribution to larval digestion. No significant (P 〉 0.05) differences in final size and survival were observed between treatments L and L-MP. Larvae subjected to starvation or fed the MPD diet alone were smaller than treatments fed live prey and did not survive past days 5 and 14, respectively. Trypsin, lipase and amylase activities were detectable at hatching. No significant differences (P 〉 0.05) in total enzyme activities among treatments were observed before day 14. Specific activity of trypsin, lipase and amylase peaked on day 3 (prior to first feeding) and subsequently decreased. For trypsin, the percentage of enzyme activity potentially attributable to ingested prey increased with age to a maximum of 17%. For lipase and amylase this fraction was less than 5% throughout the study, except on day 8 (12% and 24%, respectively). The lack of significant differences observed in the activity of digestive enzymes among treatments suggests that dietary regime, availability of prey and possible effects of exogenous enzymes did not significantly influence enzyme activity. Therefore, the lower growth rate observed in the L-MP, MP and starved treatments cannot be attributed to low digestive enzyme production of the enzymes measured. It is more likely that the MPD failed to supply the required nutrients for adequate development.

    Notes: The construction cost of fine roots was studied in 23 woody species and two grassland communities, growing under natural conditions in southern Spain. Calculation of the energy (glucose) required for their synthesis was based on the quantification of chemical components present in tissues. Despite considerable differences in the chemical composition of the three life forms studied (trees, shrubs and herbaceous), detected differences in construction cost were non-significant (mean value: 1·64 ± 0·13 g glucose g−1). However, shrubs and herbaceous plants growing in more fertile habitats expended significantly less energy on root synthesis (1·58 ± 0·06 and 1·41 ± 0·05 g glucose g−1, respectively) than those growing in less fertile areas (1·80 ± 0·06 and 1·57 ± 0·1 g glucose g−1, respectively), because they contained smaller amounts of either waxes (shrubs) or lignins (herbaceous), both expensive to synthesize, and, proportionately, more cellulose; which is inexpensive to synthesize. Deciduous and evergreen tree species also differed mainly with regard to wax and cellulose contents, giving rise to a significantly higher construction cost in evergreens (1·57 ± 0·07 g glucose g−1 versus 1·78 ± 0·02 g glucose g−1). The differences observed in construction cost appeared to be due more to habitat-induced differences in chemical composition than to any intrinsic difference between the species studied.

    Notes: Root construction and maintenance costs were estimated in four evergreen and three deciduous Quercus species that are typical in the landscape of southern Spain. The cost quantification was based on analysis of the growth–­respiration ratio. Values observed for both construction cost (ranging from 1·17 to 1·29 g glucose g−1 dry weight) and maintenance   cost   (ranging   from   6·22   to   11·71 mg glucose g−1 dry weight d−1) were generally lower than those reported in other studies. The results showed non-significant differences between deciduous and evergreen species. The lack of significant differences between species appeared to be due to the homogeneity of growth conditions. Hydroponic culture, with unrestricted nutrient and water supply, would lead to low tissue carbon content and low respiration rates, leading to the low costs observed. Furthermore, the fact that root organs are clearly importers of organic molecules inevitably entails some underestimation of the respiration associated with growth and, to a lesser extent, with maintenance respiration. This leads in turn to underestimation of the corresponding construction and maintenance costs. All this raises doubts as to the suitability of this method for studying root systems.

    Notes: Abstract Two different sol-gel methods for silica-aluminates have been used for catalyst preparation, one based on inorganic precursors, aluminum nitrate and sodium silicate, and a second based on alkoxides, aluminum tri-sec-butoxide (ATB) and tetra-ethoxy-silane (TEOS). A third element, Y-zeolite was incorporated in both of the gel matrices during the process, in order to alter the acid properties of the catalyst. Although the final compound has approximately the same chemical composition, the crystalline structures of the two catalysts are substantially different. The support made from inorganic precursor yielded a more hydroxylated surface, whereas the support based on organic precursors readily incorporated the metals into the network. The support from organic precursors showed almost total dehydroxylation. The Co-Cu complexes formed at the catalyst surface differ greatly, depending on the preparation method.

    Notes: This article identifies whether top managers in banks' parent companies are highly involved in the design of strategy and examines how management styles influence (or reflect influences) on diversification decisions within bank markets. Alongside this assessment, the research ranks the main concerns to design strategy in banking within an international setting (including the role of information and telecommunication technologies in the design and implementation of banks' diversification strategies). Results emerging from triangulating responses suggested that, on balance, top managers in bank markets are predisposed to integrate around purely strategic rather than purely financial targets or a combination of strategic and financial performance. Management of diversity does not seem to be time invariant. with results suggesting that information technology management played a secondary role in the design of bank strategy but, at the same time, information technology applications were perceived as an important force to modify competition in bank markets.

    Notes: This research considers the way banks have altered their strategies as regulatory change (i.e. deregulation) and information technology (IT) innovations created more opportunities for service delivery and extended the range of potential competitors and forms of competition. These external changes provided new diversification and growth opportunities but also modified prior expectations about the way managers defined and controlled their bank's core capabilities in pursuing current and potential business. The main research instrument used was a one hour, semi-structured interview; and in total 55 managers of commercial banks, investment banks, management consulting firms and regulators from Mexico, Spain and the UK participated. Qualitative and quantitative analysis established that the great majority of banks responded to changes in growth opportunities through diversification moves but with no clear link to core capabilities. IT management played a secondary role in the design of bank strategy but at the same time, IT applications were perceived as an important force to modify competition in bank markets by supporting radical re-engineering of service delivery in ways that undermined previous advantages of scale and scope.

    Notes: Competition in the provision of financial services has intensified as external change (including technological innovation) has created more opportunities for service delivery and extended the range of potential competitors and forms of competition. At the same time, technological innovation and applications of Information Technology in particular led to new and faster ways of sharing information. Financial service organizations, therefore face a paradox between the co-operation needed to benchmark and competitive rivalry. Through case studies, the research explores the penetration of best practice benchmarking in financial services and the role of technological innovations in that process, with an emphasis on online applications. Results suggest that changes in performance benchmarks for service delivery resulting from new technology are associated with greater competitive rivalry among financial service organizations. Results also suggest that technological change can provide new and innovative ways to exchange information but even if that is the case, incentives for internal and external co-operation can remain unchanged.

    Notes: Abstract. We study the nature of one-electron eigen-states in a one-dimensional diluted Anderson model where every Anderson impurity is diluted by a periodic function f(l). Using renormalization group and transfer matrix techniques, we provide accurate estimates of the extended states which appear in this model, whose number depends on the symmetry of the diluting function f(l). The density of states (DOS) for this model is also numerically obtained and its main features are related to the symmetries of the diluting function f(l). Further, we show that the emergence of extended states promotes a sub-diffusive spread of an initially localized wave-packet.
