Notes: We can improve our political and economic systems by redesigning our use of informational intermediaries (infomediaries). Examples of infomediaries are political parties, the news media, proxy voting advisory firms and auditors. An infomediary's source of funding influences the information it produces –“follow the money”. Political campaign finance reform is one approach to redesigning our infomediary systems. This paper proposes another approach: starting a few companies with a new corporate bylaw structure designed to enhance management accountability to shareowners. Shareowners would vote annually to hire an infomediary (paid with corporate funds) to advise them on proxy voting. If this system proves effective, it can spread to existing corporations and then to the political arena.

Notes: The criterion-related and construct validity of the situational interview (SI) was examined. Both the SI and cognitive ability had predictive validity for the academic performance of managers and professionals (n=75) in an executive MBA course. Only the SI predicted teamplaying behavior assessed by peers (r=.32, p〈.05). The correlation between the SI and cognitive ability was not significant. Emotional intelligence completely mediated the relationship between the SI and teamplaying behavior.

Notes: The combined finite-discrete element method has been used to simulate the gravitational depositions of packs containing particles of cubical shape. This approach to the generation of particle packs is based on the simulation of the dynamics of pack formation including interaction among individual particles, inertia and gravitational forces. The results of such an approach are compared to the experimental results to evaluate both feasibility and accuracy of the combined finite-discrete element simulation of packing problems.

Notes: The post-Mao reform era in China has seen the demise of utopianism. Where once the rhetoric of an unfolding socialist utopia worked to spur on the masses in their subjugation to a national cause, since the 1980s the rhetoric has entailed varying degrees of hedonism with the proliferation of consumerism, individualism, self-reliance and personal responsibility devolved to the individual or family. This has produced Chinese worlds increasingly riven with anachronisms represented by the apparent contradictions of a “planned market” or “socialist market” economy. The realm of media production in the 1990s has found itself caught in the middle of this sphere of social and rhetorical contention, engendering its own contradictions. Indeed the contradictions exhibited there may be more exaggerated than elsewhere; most notably in how Party control of the media has continued alongside increasing pressures on media organizations to compete for readerships, audiences and advertisers on an open market. Characteristic of this situation has been the emergence of new forms of media populism.

Notes: [Auszug] Correlated firing among neurons is widespread in the visual system. Neighbouring neurons, in areas from retina to cortex, tend to fire together more often than would be expected by chance. The importance of this correlated firing for encoding visual information is unclear and controversial. ...

Notes: It is now widely recognised that particle shape plays an important role in the behaviour of grand scale discontinua systems and may be partially responsible for some of the unexplained phenomena of particulate physics. It is therefore very important that a virtual discontinua modelling workbench includes a library comprising a large spectrum of shapes including real-shaped particles of interest to scientists and engineers. In this context a question of selecting a particle from such a library arises. In this paper, a particular selection procedure based on shape selection chart is proposed.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis of pure silica ZSM-5 has been modified to produce highly crystalline material in the protonated form, necessary for catalytic activity, directly from a low water fluoride gel. Tetrahedrally co-ordinated divalent species of nickel and copper have been synthesised as salts of large organic cations and increasing mole fractions incorporated into the zeolite gels. The products have been analysed and characterised using simultaneous thermogravimetric and derivative thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTG). The thermal decomposition under nitrogen of the metal associated cations, tetraethylammonium (TEA+), occluded within the zeolite channels is indicative and characteristic of the incorporation of heteroatoms into the zeolite framework. Anomalous losses in the systems can be explained by Jahn–Teller distortions. The mass losses increased with increased metal loading and were consistent with those reported in full water system, analysis also confirmed that the material was hydrophobic and thermally stable. Analysis by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) has confirmed the reliability of TG-DTG as a diagnostic tool. The maximum levels of substitution achieved were (mass%) Ni 3.93 and Cu 4.38.
