Notes: Abstract. Cells from ten human meningiomas were electrophysiologically characterized in both living tissue slices and primary cultures. In whole cells, depolarization to voltages higher than +80 mV evoked a large K+ outward current, which could be blocked by iberiotoxin (100 nm) and TEA (half blocking concentration IC50= 5.3 mm). Raising the internal Ca2+ from 10 nm to 2 mm shifted the voltage of half-maximum activation (V 1/2) of the K+ current from +106 to +4 mV. Respective inside-out patch recordings showed a voltage- and Ca2+-activated (BK Ca ) K+ channel with a conductance of 296 pS (130 mm K+ at both sides of the patch). V 1/2 of single-channel currents was +6, −12, −46, and −68 mV in the presence of 1, 10, 100, and 1000 μm Ca2+, respectively, at the internal face of the patch. In cell-attached patches the open probability (P o ) of BK Ca channels was nearly zero at potentials below +80 mV, matching the activation threshold for whole-cell K+ currents with 10 nm Ca2+ in the pipette. Application of 20 μm cytochalasin D increased P o of BK Ca channels in cell-attached patches within minutes. These data suggest that the activation of BK Ca channels in meningioma cells does not only depend on voltage and internal Ca2+ but is also controlled by the cytoskeleton.

Notes: This paper is focused on the cost of raising capital in Germany. A cross-sectional analysis of flotation cost data for 117 IPOs over the years 1993–1998 is presented. We find average flotation costs to be 7.77 percent of gross proceeds, while underwriting fees average 5.01 percent. Our results extend the literature in two important directions. First, contrary to the conventional economies of scale view we find marginal spreads to be rather constant in gross proceeds and to be higher for more risky and more complex offerings. Fixed costs amount to 5 to 9 percent of underwriting fees. Second, by applying a principal component analysis we find issue size, an issuer risk factor, and an offering method complexity factor to have an economicaly meaningful impact on underwriting fees.

Notes: The thermoresistant gluconate kinase GntK from Escherichia coli, an essential enzyme in gluconate metabolism, has been expressed, purified and crystallized. For crystallization, the hanging-drop vapour-diffusion method was used with polyethylene glycol (PEG) 6000 and lithium chloride as precipitants. Three crystal forms belonging to the monoclinic space group C2 or the orthorhombic space groups P212121 and P21212 were obtained. The unit-cell parameters are a = 75.0, b = 79.3, c = 70.2 Å, β = 105.3° (C2), a = 52.0, b = 79.3, c = 89.8 Å (P212121) and a = 70.1, b = 74.1, c = 78.9 Å (P21212). In all three crystal forms, there are two molecules in the asymmetric unit; the different forms occur in the same crystallization drop. The crystals diffract to at least 2.0 Å using synchrotron radiation.

Notes: This article analyzes whether unemployment has an effect on the splitting of a marital relationship. The study uses 40 000 observations on unemployment spells and marital status during the period from 1987 to 1996. Random effects probit and conditional likelihood logit models for panel data are applied. Using several control variables, it was confirmed that unemployment does actually lead to a higher probability of the separation of married couples.

Notes: We have investigated the irradiation induced interface mixing in ZnO/SiO2 (α-quartz) and Sb/Ni/Si thin layer systems under swift heavy ion irradiation in the electronic stopping power regime. The irradiations were carried out at 77 K using 100 MeV Ar, 260 MeV Kr, and 200 MeV Xe ions. For the ZnO/SiO2 system experiments were also carried out at lower ion energies (300, 600, and 900 keV, respectively) where nuclear stopping dominates. The alterations of the interface concentration profiles were determined by means of Rutherford backscattering spectrometry performed subsequently at the irradiated and the nonirradiated parts of the samples. While for the semimetal/metal Sb/Ni interface almost no mixing could be found after high-energy irradiation (mixing efficiency for Xe ions: k/Se〈0.02 nm5/keV) the ceramic system ZnO/SiO2 strongly reacts upon high energy ion irradiation (Xe: k/Se=2.1 nm5/keV). The Ni/Si interface shows an intermediate effect (Xe: k/Se=0.2 nm5/keV). The mixing behavior found at high ion energies is in contrast to that found in the nuclear stopping regime, where Sb/Ni shows very strong mixing and phase formation while ZnO/SiO2 exhibits only weak ballistic mixing. As was previously observed for the formation of ion tracks, interface mixing due to electronic energy deposition also sets in only if the electronic stopping power exceeds a threshold value. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this paper we present some counterexamples to show that an uncritical application of the usual methods of continuous-time portfolio optimization can be misleading in the case of a stochastic opportunity set. Cases covered are problems with stochastic interest rates, stochastic volatility, and stochastic market price of risk. To classify the problems occurring with stochastic market coefficients, we further introduce two notions of stability of portfolio problems.

Notes: This article explains the challenges faced when management-practitioners decide to enter the academic environment and teach. The authors speak from the perspective of their own experiences with respect to transitions into the academic field and also highlight prominent literature on the subject. The framework for the paper begins with the explanation of a basic model associated with cultural transition. They identify three success factors for transition: task success; social interaction; and cultural understanding and awareness and develop strategies for each. The dual themes of the article are to reinforce the usefulness of practitioners into academia and to help smooth the environmental transition for practitioner-academicians (PAs) by developing strategies for success.

Notes: Abstract The 3-D density field of a round, neutrally buoyant turbulent jet is obtained using a finite-fringe, shearing interferometer. A He–Ne laser beam (λ=632.8 nm) is subdivided into six beams of equal intensity, which intersect a helium–argon jet flowing from a vertical nozzle. Two-dimensional projection data of the jet are captured simultaneously from six viewing directions distributed over 140°. The desired phase is removed from the spatial carrier using the Fourier transform method. A tomographic reconstruction technique, using a truncated Fourier–Bessel expansion is performed to obtain the complete 3-D density field. The Reynolds number, based on the exit mean velocity and the nozzle diameter, is 5890.
