Notes: Neither market orientation nor the possible link to performance is easily achieved and in various countries companies may organize differently to cope with the information-processing and customer-responding challenges. Nationwide surveys in banks in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden indicate that a path to performance involves innovations such as "supported empowerment" though there are differences in the antecedents of market orientation. Thus the most distinct Scandinavian ways to improvements may be found in Sweden. Especially Swedish banks and to a lesser extent Finnish banks are upfront in their use of "the technology of customer-focusing". Nevertheless, the overall analyses based on rigorous structural equation modeling lead to the estimation of a model reflecting causal relationships which seem to be independent of nationality.

Notes: Aquaculture is an important factor in the fishery of Laguna de Bay in the Philippines; fish-pens and net-cages covered ≈10% of the lake surface in the late 1990s. The present study was carried out to assess the possible influences of aquaculture on a wild fish species, silverperch, Terapon plumbeus Kner, with a special emphasis on the feeding ecology of this fish. For the purposes of the investigation, 24-h samples were taken at 2-month intervals close to a fish-pen as well as in open water over a one-year period to acquire more information on this species. Significant differences in standard length and total weight were found between stations and sampling months. In open water, a mean standard length of 53.6 mm and a mean total weight of 4.2 g were found, whereas close to the fish-pen, the corresponding values were 57.6 mm and 5.4 g, respectively. The maximum mean standard length was attained around December 1996 and February 1997 (59.5 mm in open water; 66.1 mm close to the fish-pen), and the minimum was found in June 1996 (49.1 mm in open water; 46.2 mm close to the fish-pen). Noticeable differences were found in the food spectrum between the two sampling stations. Zooplankton, the major food source at both stations, was more important in the stomach content of fish in open water. The same was true for insects (i.e. chironomid larvae), although these did not make up such a large fraction of the diet. On the other hand, close to the fish-pen, aufwuchs-algae, phytoplankton and fish were more important. Generally, benthic organisms were consumed more frequently close to the fish-pen. Zooplankton was more important in the diet of smaller fish. In all size groups, the importance of zooplankton decreased during the rainy season.

Notes: 3(R)-Hydroxyoxylipins are produced via an aspirin-sensitive pathway in Candida albicans, an abundant pathogen in vulvovaginal candidiasis. In the present study, we have investigated the effect of aspirin on vaginal isolates of C. albicans from patients with recurrent candidiasis. Aspirin alone and with clotrimazole, a commonly used drug, strongly suppressed growth of C. albicans. 3(R)-Hydroxyoxylipins, which were selectively located in hyphae and other filamentous structures, but not in free blastospores, were almost totally suppressed by aspirin. Moreover, C. albicans stimulated prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) production in HeLa cells. PGE2 is a stimulus for germ tube formation in C. albicans. We conclude therefore that the administration of aspirin should be beneficial in the treatment of vulvovaginal candidiasis by dual ways: (i) by inhibition of 3(R)-hydroxyoxylipin formation, and (ii) by inhibition of PGE2 formation in the infected host tissue.

Notes: Spawning by Antarctic fish is generally considered to be seasonal and restricted to a brief period during the autumn and winter. Arising from this it has been assumed that the gonadal maturation cycle is also closely associated with the time of year. The gonad maturation cycle of the mackerel icefish Champsocephalus gunnari was investigated using data collected during research surveys and from sampling the commercial fishery. Spawning appears to occur at the same time each year, but the timing of gonadal development is subject to a considerable inter-annual variation. The implications of this variation are discussed with respect to feeding conditions.

Notes: The carboxyvinyl transfer from phosphoenolpyruvate to UDP-N-acetylglucosamine is the first committed step in the pathway of peptidoglycan formation. This crucial reaction for bacterial cell growth is catalysed by the MurA enzymes. Gram-negative bacteria carry one murA gene, whereas in a subgroup of Gram-positive bacteria two separate paralogues, MurAA and MurAB, exist. This study provides evidence that in the Gram-positive bacterium Bacillus subtilis, the MurAA protein is specifically degraded by the ClpCP protease. This Clp-dependent degradation is especially enhanced upon entry into stationary phase, thus ensuring an immediate growth arrest due to stalled murein biosynthesis. The MurAA protein can therefore be addressed as a target of Clp-dependent regulatory proteolysis such as the transcriptional regulators CtsR, ComK, Spx in B. subtilis, CtrA in Caulobacter crescentus or RpoS in Escherichia coli. Taking into account all other known regulatory targets of ATP-dependent proteases, MurAA of B. subtilis represents the first example of a metabolic enzyme which is a unique regulatory substrate of Clp-dependent proteolysis. Its function as a regulatory metabolic checkpoint resembles that of homoserine trans-succinylase (MetA) in E. coli which is similarly ATP-dependently degraded.

Notes: Mackerel icefish have a widespread distribution in the Atlantic and Indian Ocean sectors of the low-Antarctic region. Biological characteristics differ considerably between populations in the southern Scotia Arc and those living further to the north. Fish living in the north mature 1 year earlier than in the south. They have a much shorter life span and die after they have spawned two to three times. The number of eggs produced per gram of body mass is higher in the north. Stocks have declined in most parts of the distributional range due to the impact of fishing and due to natural causes. Increases in populations of Antarctic fur seals at South Georgia and parts of the Indian Ocean appear to have led to increased predation on stocks of icefish. Shifts in hydrological regimes in the northern part of the distributional range have either started to lead or will lead to deteriorating living conditions for mackerel icefish in the near future. Fish stock assessment needs to take these constraints into consideration when providing advice on total allowable catches for fisheries management.

Notes: Aerobic glucose-limited chemostat cultivations were conducted with Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains NRRL Y132, ATCC 4126 and CBS 8066, using a complex medium. At low dilution rates all three strains utilised glucose oxidatively with high biomass yield coefficients, no ethanol production and very low steady-state residual glucose concentrations in the culture. Above a threshold dilution rate, respiro-fermentative (oxido-reductive) metabolism commenced, with simultaneous respiration and fermentation occurring, which is typical of Crabtree-positive yeasts. However, at high dilution rates the three strains responded differently. At high dilution rates S. cerevisiae CBS 8066 produced 7–8 g ethanol L−1 from 20 g glucose L−1 with concomitant low levels of residual glucose, which increased markedly only close to the wash-out dilution rate. By contrast, in the respiro-fermentative region both S. cerevisiae ATCC 4126 and NRRL Y132 produced much lower levels of ethanol (3–4 g L−1) than S. cerevisiae CBS 8066, concomitant with very high residual sugar concentrations, which was a significant deviation from Monod kinetics and appeared to be associated either with high growth rates or with a fermentative (or respiro-fermentative) metabolism. Supplementation of the cultures with inorganic or organic nutrients failed to improve ethanol production or glucose assimilation. Notes: Abstract The composition of the coastal fish fauna around Elephant Island (northern South Shetland Islands) was investigated during seven bottom trawl surveys of FRV “Walther Herwig”, FV “Polarstern” and FRV “Yuzhmorgeologiya” from 1981 to 1998. Low-Antarctic (or lesser or peri-Antarctic) fish species were the predominant element of the coastal fish fauna. Large-scale fishing from 1978 to 1981 reduced stock sizes of the most abundant species Champsocephalus gunnari and Notothenia rossii to the extent that only a small fraction of the initial stock remained. After the period of intensive fishing, Gobionotothen gibberifrons became the most abundant species around the island. The by-catch species, which had probably been less affected by harvesting, recovered by the end of the 1980s/beginning of the 1990s. Fish biomass was highest in the 100- to 400-m depth range. An MDS plot revealed the existence of five groups of species that overlapped in their distribution to some extent. One important factor that separated the five groups was depth. Other factors that might have been important in structuring the vertical distribution of the fish fauna, such as bottom topography and sediment type, could not be investigated. Species composition was dominated by a few abundant low-Antarctic species. In four of the five groups, G. gibberifrons was by far the most abundant species, after C. gunnari and N. rossii had been largely eliminated due to fishing. Only in the 100- to 200-m depth range was C. gunnari more abundant than G. gibberifrons. In the 400- to 500-m depth stratum, a high-Antarctic species, Chionodraco rastrospinosus, and Lepidonotothen squamifrons, a species of Patagonian origin which lacks antifreeze glycopeptides, gained some importance. Species richness showed a positive trend with increasing depth. Evenness and Hill's N1 index were highest in the shallowest and deepest depth strata. Hill's N2 index was lowest in depth strata 3 and 4, which had the most even distribution of the abundant fish species.

Notes: Abstract The steady-state residual glucose concentrations in aerobic chemostat cultures of Saccharomyces cerevisiae ATCC 4126, grown in a complex medium, increased sharply in the respiro-fermentative region, suggesting a large increase in the apparent ks value. By contrast, strain CBS 8066 exhibited much lower steady-state residual glucose concentrations in this region. Glucose transport assays were conducted with these strains to determine the relationship between transport kinetics and sugar assimilation. With strain CBS 8066, a high-affinity glucose uptake system was evident up to a dilution rate of 0.41 h−1, with a low-affinity uptake system and high residual glucose levels only evident at the higher dilution rates. With strain ATCC 4126, the high-affinity uptake system was present up to a dilution rate of about 0.38 h−1, but a low-affinity uptake system was discerned already from a dilution rate of 0.27 h−1, which coincided with the sharp increase in the residual glucose concentration. Neither of the above yeast strains had an absolute vitamin requirement for aerobic growth. Nevertheless, in the same medium supplemented with vitamins, no low-affinity uptake system was evident in cells of strain ATCC 4126 even at high dilution rates and the steady-state residual glucose concentration was much lower. The shift in the relative proportions of the high and low-affinity uptake systems of strain ATCC 4126, which might have been mediated by an inositol deficiency through its effect on the cell membrane, may offer an explanation for the unusually high steady-state residual glucose concentrations observed at dilution rates above 52% of the wash-out dilution rate.

Notes: Abstract Research on the distribution of oxylipins (3-hydroxy fatty acids) in flocculant strains of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae led to the uncovering of a novel ‘ghosting’ phenomenon observed during assumed lectin-mediated aggregation. We found that intracellular oxylipin-containing osmiophilic layers migrate through yeast cell walls in a ‘ghostlike’ fashion without visually affecting the cell wall structure or the layers. This migration resulted in the binding of these layers to cell walls of adjacent cells. Consequently, ‘ghosting’ seems a prerequisite for flocculation to occur. However, ‘ghosting’ alone may not be sufficient to ensure flocculation.
