    Notes: 1. Movements and habitat use by Atlantic salmon parr in Catamaran Brook, New Brunswick, were studied using Passive Integrated Transponder technology. The fish were tagged in the summer of 1999, and a portable reading system was used to collect data on individual positions within a riffle-pool sequence in the early winter of 1999. Two major freezing events occurred on November 11–12 (Ice 1) and November 18–19 (Ice 2) that generated significant accumulations of anchor ice in the riffle.2. Individually tagged parr (fork length 8.4–12.6 cm, n = 15) were tracked from 8 to 24 November 1999. Over this period, emigration (40%) was higher from the pool than from the riffle. Of the nine parr that were consistently located, seven parr moved 〈5 m up- or downstream, and two parr moved more than 10 m (maximum 23 m). Parr moved significantly more by night than by day, and diel habitat shifts were more pronounced in the pool with some of the fish moving closer to the bank at night.3. During Ice 2, there was relatively little movement by most of the parr in the riffle beneath anchor ice up to 10 cm in thickness. Water temperature was 0.16 °C above the freezing point beneath anchor ice, suggesting the existence of suitable habitats where salmon parr can avoid supercooling conditions and where they can have access to low velocity shelters. To our knowledge, these are the first data on habitat use by Atlantic salmon parr under anchor ice.

    Notes: Zero erucic acid germplasm of Ethiopian mustard is characterized by high levels of linolenic acid (about 21%). Two genetic sources of low linolenic acid (N2-4961 and HF-186, about 5%), have been developed in a high erucic acid background. The objectives of this research were to study the genetic relationship between the two low linolenic acid lines and to transfer the trait to zero erucic acid germplasm. F1 seed generations from crosses between both lines had higher average linolenic acid concentration than both parents. F2 seeds segregated for linolenic acid content following a continuous variation from 1.8 to 7.4%, exceeding the limits of the parental distribution ranges. Transgressive recombinants with very low linolenic acid concentration (0.7-2.7%) were confirmed in the F3 seed generation. The results suggested that N2-4961 and HF-186 possess alleles for low linolenic acid at different loci. Transgressive low linolenic acid F3 plants were crossed with plants of a zero erucic acid line and a selection for zero erucic, low linolenic acid was conducted. As a result, a zero erucic acid F3:4 line containing 1.5 ± 0.7% linolenic acid was developed.

    Notes: The present study examined the effects of dry grinding, using ball-milling, on the structure of reference well-crystallized (KGa-1) and poorly crystallized (KGa-2) kaolinite powders from Georgia. Grinding produced a strong structural alteration, mainly along the c axis, resulting in disorder and total degradation of the crystal structure of the kaolinite and the formation of an amorphous product. The surface area increased with grinding time, mainly in KGa-2 (maximum value 50.27 m2/g), a result associated with particle-size reduction. These particles became more agglomerated with grinding, and the surface area decreased after 30 min, as confirmed by scanning electron microscopy and particle-size-distribution analysis. There was a limit to particle-size reduction with grinding time. When grinding time was increased, the original endothermic differential thermal analysis (DTA) effects of dehydroxylation in both samples shifted to lower temperatures, decreased in intensity, then disappeared completely after 120 min of grinding. The temperature of the characteristic first exothermic effect shifted slightly to lower temperatures with grinding, although the DTA effects did not increase with grinding time in either kaolinite sample, at least up to 325 min. The amorphous, mechanically activated kaolinite converted into low-crystalline mullite nuclei at a lower temperature than did the unground samples, as deduced by thermal and X-ray observations. This effect was especially important for the KGa-2 sample. Grinding did not seem to influence the formation of silicon-aluminum spinel from kaolinite. The present results may explain why ground kaolinite samples prepared via different routes—e.g., with differences in grinding—behave differently during high-temperature transformations, as reported in the related literature.

    Notes: Mullite ceramics have been prepared from an aqueous suspension of kaolinite (raw or ground) and aluminum hydroxide. The precursor was coprecipitated in the mixture using hexamethylenediamine (HMDA) or ammonium hydroxide, and a solution of aluminum chloride from acid dissolution of wastes of aluminum metal. The precursor and the resulting materials were characterized and studied by X-ray diffraction, thermal methods, and mechanical strength and porosity measurements. The feasibility of the proposed chemical processing route for mullite preparation was demonstrated, in particular using HMDA as a precipitating agent for aluminum hydroxide instead of ammonium hydroxide, which adversely affects the system reactivity. The use of HMDA, as compared with ammonium hydroxide, and ground kaolinite produces single-phase mullite and enhances the flexural strength (maximum of 49 MPa) of the resultant ceramic porous bodies (porosity ca. 52–45 vol%) fired at 1550–1600°C for 30 min.

    Notes: The zero erucic acid Ethiopian mustard lines developed so far are characterized by an exceptionally high linolenic acid content in the seed oil. The mutant line N2-4961, expressing low linolenic acid content in a high erucic acid background, was developed through chemical mutagenesis. The objective of this research was to study the inheritance of low linolenic acid content in this mutant. Line N2-4961 was reciprocally crossed with its parent line C-101 and the linolenic acid content of the reciprocal F1, F2 and BC1 generations was studied. No maternal, cytoplasmic or dominance effects were detected in the analysis of F1 seeds and F1 plants from reciprocal crosses. Linolenic acid content segregated in 1: 2: 1 ratios in all the F2 populations studied, suggesting monogenic inheritance. This was confirmed with the analysis of the reciprocal backcross generation. The simple inheritance of low linolenic acid content in N2-4961 will facilitate the transference of this trait to zero erucic acid lines of Ethiopian mustard.

    Notes: Abstract In the course of the preparation of WO3 by sol-gel technique we have studied kinetics of its synthesis and the structural changes during gelation. In-situ Raman scattering spectra were obtained for a series of samples during the transition from aqueous solution to gel. The changes in the Raman features were monitored as a function of time during gelation. The removal of water molecules affects the symmetric W=O stretching mode. The Raman spectrum of a gelified sample shows peaks attributed to the O–W–O bending mode and the disappearance of the high-frequency mode attributed to polyanionic species. After two days the gelified sample became a precipitated material, which exhibited the Raman spectrum of a crystalline tungsten oxide hydrate.

    Notes: Abstract The conformational profile of the pentadecapeptide of sequenceAVYYCTRGYHGSSLY, capable of mimicking the group-specific ‘a’ determinant of human hepatitis B surface antigen at both the B- and T-cell level, was assessed using the combined informationprovided by circular dichroism (CD) studies, IR spectroscopy and molecular mechanics. Specifically, the CD spectra of the peptide was recorded in various environments including an aqueous buffer, trifluoroethanol, hexafluoroisopropanol and inmicellar solutions of sodium dodecylsulfate in order to analyzeits conformational profile. Analysis of the results suggests the strong tendency of the peptide to adopt β structures in the different structuring media. Furthermore, the IR spectrumof the peptide recorded in DMSO shows absorptions compatible with a β sheet structure. Finally, molecular mechanics calculations using an iterative simulated annealing protocol to sample the conformational space, supplemented by a moleculardynamics simulation in water, suggest as the most important peptide secondary structure feature the adoption of a hairpinconformation. Accordingly, the combined information provided by the different techniques used in the present work, consistently suggest that the peptide 2F10 exhibits a tendencyto adopt a hairpin conformation in solution.
