Notes: Methyl-p-aminobenzoate(NH3)1 complex, henceforth MAB(NH3)1, prepared in a pulsed supersonic expansion, has been examined by laser mass-selective spectroscopies and density functional theory calculations, aiming to ascertain its isomer number, structures, identification, ionization energies, and vibrational assignments. Resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization and hole burning spectra of the species in supersonic beams show two 000 transitions redshifted by −715 and −709 cm−1 from that of bare MAB band origin and are plausibly associated with two different isomers, whereas ab initio calculations indicate the likely existence of five stable isomer structures. Identification of the experimental isomer spectra with the calculated structures is reported and, in particular, several isomer vibrational bands are identified by contrast with the calculated modes. Properties and features of the MAB(NH3)1 are compared with those of the MAB/water complexes. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Methyl-p-aminobenzoate(H2O)1 complex, henceforth MAB(H2O)1, prepared by pulsed supersonic expansion, has been examined by a broad range of laser based spectroscopic, mass and isomer selective techniques and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in order to identify its isomer structures, ionization energies, and vibrational frequencies. The experimental techniques used include laser induced fluorescence (LIF), mass resolved excitation spectroscopy (MRES) either with one (REMPI) or two laser colors (R2PI), laser excited dispersed emission (DE), high resolution MRES, pressure controlled R2PI, hole burning (HB) spectroscopy, and photoion fragmentation threshold (PIFT). Experimental results have been interpreted, rationalized and extended with density functional theory (DFT) computations at the B3LYP/6-31G and B3LYP/6-31+G* levels. Although bare MAB molecule have four possible solvation sites, prone to yielding hydrogen bonds with the water molecule, LIF, R2PI, and HB spectroscopy of MAB(H2O)1 only pick out the presence of three blue shifted isomers, each accompanied by a number of vibrational features extending to (approximate)500 cm−1. The high intensity bands have been demonstrated to originate in three isomers and their ionization energies, dispersed emission, vibrational spectra, and photoion fragmentation threshold have been measured and characterized. Isomer shifts and structures are discussed in the light of experimental and theoretical results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract. Remediation techniques for soil pollution have been studied in the aftermath of a tailing spill from a pyrite-mine holding pond in Aznalcóllar (southwest Spain). Given the extent of the accident and the characteristics of the affected area, we conclude that, after the removal of the tailings, the only feasible remediation measure involves chemical immobilization of the pollutants. The best treatment tested proved to be liming in combination with amendment materials such as soils rich in iron oxides and clay. Monitoring for 3 years has demonstrated that the system is effective for reducing the solubility of the most mobile forms of the main pollutant elements, although further monitoring is recommended.

Notes: Ion acoustic and electron plasma waves, associated with backward-propagating stimulated Brillouin scattering and stimulated Raman scattering, have been diagnosed in a long-scale-length, nearly homogenous plasma with transverse flow. Thomson scattered light from a probe beam is employed to show that these waves are well localized in space and for a time much shorter than the laser pulse duration. These plasma conditions are relevant to hohlraum design for the National Ignition Facility inertial confinement fusion laser system. [R. Notes: Single hot spot experiments offer several unique opportunities for developing a quantitative understanding of laser-plasma instabilities. These include the ability to perform direct numerical simulations of the experiment due to the finite interaction volume, isolation of instabilities due to the nearly ideal laser intensity distribution, and observation of fine structure due to the homogeneous plasma initial conditions. Experiments performed at Trident in the single hot spot regime have focused on the following issues. First, the intensity scaling of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) for classically large damping regimes (kλD=0.35) was examined, and compared to classical SRS theory. SRS onset was observed at intensities much lower than expected (2×1015 W/cm2), from which nonclassical damping is inferred. Second, Thomson scattering was used to probe plasma waves driven by SRS, and structure was observed in the scattered spectra consistent with multiple steps of the Langmuir decay instability. Finally, scattering from a plasma wave was observed whose frequency and phase velocity are between an ion acoustic wave and an electron plasma wave. The presence of this wave cannot be explained by linear Landau theory, and it is shown to be consistent with a BGK-type mode due to electron trapping. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Fingering instabilities involving fluids confined between two plates sometimes give rise to a typical wavelength λ proportional to the gap h. This unexplained behavior is investigated for the case of the Rayleigh–Taylor instability between two liquids of the same viscosity. Using qualitative scaling arguments and linear stability analysis for a simplified model of hydrodynamics, we show that, in the miscible case, h becomes a natural cut-off when diffusion is negligible, i.e., when the Péclet number Pe=h3Δρg/(ηD) is large (η viscosity, g gravitational acceleration, D diffusivity, Δρ density difference). The same result holds in the immiscible case for large capillary number Ca=h2Δρg/(12γ) (γ surface tension). In this saturation regime, the dominant wavelength is given by λ(approximate)2.3h, while in the opposite limit (low Pe or low Ca) λ scales, respectively, as h/Pe or h/Ca1/2. These results are in agreement with a recent experimental study. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The photoluminescence characteristics (peak intensity, peak wavelength and full width at half maximum of the emission band) of p-type porous silicon have been measured as a function of the etching time. Experimental data are discussed in the light of a pore nucleation and growth mechanism recently proposed by the authors. The steps of the formation of the porous layer are clearly apparent in the photoluminescence characteristic evolution. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The interactions among the yeast stalk components (P0, P1α, P1β, P2α and P2β) and with EF-2 have been explored using immunoprecipitation, affinity chromatography and the two-hybrid system. No stable association was detected between acidic proteins of the same type. In contrast, P1α and P1β were found to interact with P2β and P2α respectively. An interaction of P0 with P1 proteins, but not with P2 proteins, was also detected. This interaction is strongly increased with the P0 carboxyl end, which is able to form a pentameric complex with the four acidic proteins. The P1/P2 binding site has been located between residues 212 and 262 using different C-terminal P0 fragments. Immunoprecipitation shows the association of EF-2 with protein P0. However, the interaction is stronger with the P1/P2 proteins than with P0 in the two-hybrid assay. This interaction improves using the 100-amino-acid-long C-end of P0 and is even higher with the last 50 amino acids. The data indicate a specific association of P1α with P2β and of P1β with P2α rather than the dimerization of the acidic proteins found in prokaryotes. In addition, they suggest that stalk assembly begins by the interaction of the P1 proteins with P0. Moreover, as functional interactions of the complete P0 were found to increase using protein fragments, the data suggest that some active sites are exposed in the ribosome as a result of conformational changes that take place during stalk assembly and function.

Notes: Abstract A field experiment was conducted to examine the effect of drip irrigation using wastewater from a table olive industry on physiological, nutritional and yield parameters of olive trees (Olea europaea L.). Very limited information, if any, exists, on the potential of recycling this kind of wastewater in agriculture. Two types of wastewater were used in the experiment, the first with SAR and EC values of 12–56 and 3.5–4.2 dS m−1, respectively, and the second 73–90 and 4.3–6.0 dS m−1. In general, this kind of wastewater has a highly variable composition and SAR values that are too high for agricultural purposes. Olive trees rapidly responded to wastewater application. Compared to the control (fresh water), the more saline wastewater caused important decreases in leaf water potential, stomatal conductance to H2O and the photosynthesis rate after only 15 days of irrigation, the reduction being more pronounced after 2 months of irrigation. This treatment also caused a rapid, significant reduction in leaf N concentration, as compared with the N level in the trees before irrigation. Both types of wastewater significantly reduced olive yield, compared to that obtained in the control. These results indicate that this kind of wastewater is unsuitable for application to olive orchards under irrigation.
