    Description: This paper investigates the motion response of a floating body in time domain under the influence of small amplitude regular waves. The governing equations of motion describing the balance of wave-exciting force with the inertial, damping, and restoring forces are transformed into frequency domain by applying Laplace transform technique. Assuming the floating body is initially at rest and the waves act perpendicular to the vessel of lateral symmetry, hydrodynamic coefficients were obtained in terms of integrated sectional added-mass, damping, and restoring coefficients, derived from Frank's close-fit curve. A numerical experiment on a vessel of19190ton displaced mass was carried out for three different wave frequencies, namely,0.56rad/s,0.74rad/s, and1.24rad/s. The damping parameters (ςi) reveal the system stability criteria, derived from the quartic analysis, corresponding to the undamped frequencies (βi). It is observed that the sway and yaw motions become maximum for frequency0.56rad/s, whereas roll motion is maximum for frequency0.74rad/s. All three motions show harmonic behavior and attain dynamic equilibrium for timet〉100seconds. The mathematical approach presented here will be useful to determine seaworthiness characteristics of any vessel when wave amplitudes are small and also to validate complex numerical models.

    Description: Concerted observational and modelling programmes are underway to determine the mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet, and therefore help predict its response to future climatic change. We present results of meteorological modelling based on ERA-40 reanalysis data from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). Our novel surface-mass-balance history of the ice sheet for 1958-2003, is based on accumulation (snowfall minus evaporation/sublimation) modelling and a new monthly melt-water runoff model by Janssens & Huybrechts (Huybrechts 2002). These techniques combined yield valuable insights into the past and present state and variability of the Greenland ice mass and links with climate. Aspects of the validation of the new accumulation, runoff and SMB series are discussed. There was considerable interannual variability in snow accumulation, runoff and mass balance over the last 46 years. By comparing with long-term temperature, precipitation and accumulation records from the meteorological stations and ice cores, we discuss possible climatic factors forcing the ice in this period. There are distinct signals in runoff and SMB following three major volcanic eruptions. Runoff losses from the ice sheet were 280(±28) km^3 yr^-1 in 1961-90 and 391(±39) km^3 yr^-1 in 1998-2003. Significantly rising runoff since the 1990s has been partly offset by more precipitation. However, our best estimate of overall mass balance declined from -3(±53) km^3 yr^-1 in 1961-90 to -65(±61) km^3 yr^-1 in 1998-2003. Additional dynamical factors that cause an acceleration of ice flow near the margins, and possible enhanced iceberg calving, may have led to a more negative mass balance in the past few years than suggested here. The implication is a significant and accelerating recent contribution from the ice sheet, about 0.22 mm yr^-1 over the last six years, to global sea-level rise. Runoff and thinning of the ice-sheet margins increased substantially since the 1990s. However, massive snow accumulation over south-east Greenland during winter 2002/03, well shown in our analysis, led to unprecedented thickening in recent NASA aircraft LIDAR surveys. Do these recent changes indicate more extreme weather conditions including warming over the Ice Sheet, more storminess and higher accumulation events, due to global warming?

    Notes: We report a low-pump-threshold, all-solid-state subpicosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for the mid-infrared based on periodically poled LiNbO3 and synchronously pumped by a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. Using a semimonolithic cavity design and hemispherical focusing, pump power thresholds of 17 mW and mid-infrared idler powers of 64 mW have been obtained in the 3.9–6 μm spectral range in a simple, practical, and compact configuration at pulse repetition rates of up to 322 MHz. The OPO delivers a signal output power of up to 280 mW at ∼35% extraction efficiency and can provide transform-limited signal pulses with durations of 0.4 ps over the spectral range of 1.00–1.14 μm. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A common feature that stimulates modelling efforts across the various physical sciences is that complex microscopic behaviour underlies apparently simple macroscopic effects. Mathematical formulations attempt to capture the initial and evolving microstructural entities either implicitly or explicitly and link their effects to measurable macroscopic variables such as load or stress by averaging out any microscopic fluctuations. The implicit formulations that ignore the inherent spatial heterogeneity in the deforming domain form the basis of constitutive models forinput to finite element (FE) systems. On the other hand, explicit formulations to capture and link microstructural entities rely on narrowing down the size of each finite element, thereby increasing the number of finite elements in the deforming domain, an effect accompanied by a rapid growth in computational time. The model described here, Cellular Automata based Finite Elements (CAFE), utilises the Cellular Automata technique to represent initial and evolving microstructural features(e.g., dislocation densities, grain sizes, etc.) in C-Mn steels at an appropriate length scale by linking the macro-scale process variables obtained using an overlying finite element mesh. Differences will be illustrated between single and two-pass hot rolling experiments

    Notes: Abstract. A folding potential describing the $\alpha$ -scattering on 16O over a broad energy range 25.8-146.0 MeV is constructed on the basis of $\alpha$ -like cluster and unclustered-nucleon configurations of 16O. The resulting potential does not need any renormalization to fit the angular distribution of elastic cross-sections. The effects of the repulsive part of $\alpha$ - $\alpha$ and $\alpha$ -nucleon interactions are investigated. The analysis suggests that both the $\alpha$ - $\alpha$ repulsive potential and the unclustered nucleonic configuration in the target are important to describe the scattering data over a broad range of incident energies. The root-mean-square radius for the 16O nucleus is deduced.

Nanoparticles of zinc substituted Mg-ferrite with compositions Mg(1-x)Zn x Fe2O4 (x = 0.15, 0.30 and 0.50) having particle sizes in the range 6.4 nm to 21.4 nm prepared by the co-precipitation method were characterized by 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffratometry and AC magnetic susceptibility measurements. Mössbauer measurements at room temperature and down to 20 K clearly indicate presence of superparamagnetic particles in all the samples. AC magnetic susceptibility data show lowering of blocking temperature with decrease of particle size. Superparamagnetic relaxation was observed for larger particle size in samples with higher Zn content, which is attributed to the weakening of A-B exchange interaction in ferrite lattice due to replacement of Fe3 + in tetrahedral site by Zn2 + ions.

    Notes: Abstract With a view to develop light weight, low cost and abrasion resistant material cast aluminium alloy composites dispersed with granite particles were prepared and their properties were evaluated. Natural mineral granite was crushed and treated prior to its incorporation in the aluminium alloy. Liquid metallurgy techniques was used to prepare composites involving the following steps: melting of aluminium alloy in graphite crucible, stirring of the melt, addition of granite particles and reactive metal in the melt and pouring the composite melt into permanent moulds. Physical, mechanical, tribological and metallographic properties of composites were studied. It was observed that there was reasonably uniform dispersion of granite particles in the matrix. Hardness and tribological (abrasive wear) properties of the base alloy improved considerably due to addition of the granite particles into it. This clearly indicates that these cast aluminium alloy based composites can be used as wear resistant materials.

    Notes: Abstract Deposition temperature and annealing conditions have pronounced effects on the structure and electrical properties of LPCVD silicon thin films. Films grown at 580°C are amorphous whereas those grown at 620°C are microcrystalline. All thin films are subjected to phosphorous diffusion followed by different annealing treatments. Annealing of amorphous films at 1000°C results in large grains with no favoured orientation and with a relatively high mobility value. Annealing treatment at 1000°C of the microcrystalline sample results in moderate grain growth with a relatively low mobility which presumably is due to some favoured grain orientation.
