Notes: The configurations of oligomers of polyimide and polyetherketone polycyclic polymers in the melt are predicted by a new hybrid pivot Monte Carlo (PMC)/molecular dynamics (MD) single-chain sampling technique restricted to a limited number of near-neighbor interactions. These are then compared to configurations obtained for the same models by running MD simulations on the corresponding multichain systems in the bulk melt. A new phantom-atom technique is introduced which avoids interlocking rings during construction of the bulk melt samples. Similar to earlier work carried out on polyethylene, polyvinylchloride and uncharged polyethylene oxide, both theoretical and bulk melt sampled conformational and configurational properties are found to be in very good agreement. This confirms that the new hybrid PMC/MD sampling is a promising and cost-effective technique for preparing polymer samples prior to subsequent MD simulations of the bulk amorphous phase. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A novel closed loop track based multi-head robot has been developed to increase the material handing throughput. This robot allows waves of autonomous robot heads to move materials in to the working path by eliminating the traditional return path. Two distributed control architectures were developed using a system comprising of desktop, embedded and single board PC's some linked by wireless communications. This paper discusses the design and impact of such control architectures, and looks at some performance boundaries.

Notes: The crystal structure of diphenyl(3-phenylpropyl)phosphine, C21H21P, has been determined at 180 (1) K. The molecules may be considered to be linked into chains running along screw diads in space group P21/c, with molecules adjacent in these chains associated via face-to-face and edge-to-face interactions between phenyl rings. Edge-to-face interactions also exist between chains giving rise to centrosymmetric fourfold motifs.

Notes: Although ground water discharge-can limit plume migration and transfer contaminants to streams, interactions among ground water, rivers, and tributaries in contaminated watersheds have received relatively little attention. We used multiple methods to delineate seepage along Little Bayou and Bayou Creeks, tributaries to the Ohio River in McCracken County, Kentucky, from July 1996 through July 1998. The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant (PGDP) lies between the creeks. Trichloroethene (TCE) and technetium-99 plumes within the underlying Regional Gravel Aquifer (RGA) extend several kilometers from PGDP toward the river. Both creeks tend to gain flow where they are incised into the RGA or contiguous strata in the Ohio flood plain. Bayou Creek also gains flow upstream of PGDP; other reaches of both creeks tend to lose flow. Local storms, river floods, and seasonal dry periods caused temporary changes in seepage rates and reversals in hydraulic gradients. Gaining conditions were indicated by seeps, springs, and boils, by upward hydraulic gradients from bank wells and bed piezometers to the stream, and by mixing models using chloride and oxygen-18. Mixing models and downward hydraulic gradients from the stream to wells indicated losing conditions. Annual ranges of stream, bed, and bank temperatures tended to be narrower, bed and bank temperatures in summer and early autumn tended to be cooler, and maximum values of specific discharge measured by seepage meters were greater along gaining than along losing reaches. Estimates of specific discharge from stream gauging and one-dimensional flow-modeling did not conclusively identify losing and gaining reaches, but absolute values of those estimates fell within the range of seepage-meter measurements. Contaminants discharging to Little Bayou Creek were diluted downstream by uncontaminated ground water. Volatilization, biodegradation, or sorption probably removed TCE from stream water. These results indicate that discharge to tributaries can limit seepage of contaminants to rivers.

Notes: The spo0A genes of Clostridium beijerinckii NCIMB 8052 and Clostridium cellulolyticum ATCC 35319 were isolated and characterized. The C-terminal DNA-binding domains of the predicted products of spo0A from these two organisms, as well as 16 other taxonomically diverse species of Bacillus and Clostridium, show extensive amino acid sequence conservation (56% identity, 65% similarity over 104 residues). A 12-amino-acid motif (SRVERAIRHAIE) that forms the putative DNA recognition helix is particularly highly conserved, suggesting a common DNA target. Insertional inactivation of spo0A in C. beijerinckii blocked the formation of solvents (as well as spores and granulose). Sequences resembling Spo0A-binding motifs (TGNCGAA) are found in the promoter regions of several of the genes whose expression is modulated at the onset of solventogenesis in Clostridium acetobutylicum and C. beijerinckii. These include the upregulated adc gene, encoding acetoacetate decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.4), and the downregulated ptb gene, encoding phosphotransbutyrylase (EC 2.3.1.c). In vitro gel retardation experiments using C. acetobutylicum adc and C. beijerinckii ptb promoter fragments and recombinant Bacillus subtilis and C. beijerinckii Spo0A suggested that adc and ptb are directly controlled by Spo0A. The binding affinity was reduced when the 0A boxes were destroyed, and enhanced when they were modified to conform precisely to the consensus sequence. In vivo analysis of wild-type and mutagenized promoters transcriptionally fused to the gusA reporter gene in C. beijerinckii validated this hypothesis. Post-exponential phase expression from the mutagenized adc promoter was substantially reduced, whereas expression from the mutagenized ptb promoter was not shut down at the end of exponential growth.

Notes: [Auszug] The linker histone H1 is believed to be involved in chromatin organization by stabilizing higher-order chromatin structure. Histone H1 is generally viewed as a repressor of transcription as it prevents the access of transcription factors and chromatin remodelling complexes to DNA. ...

Notes: We conduct an analysis of public financial offerings of equity Real Estate Investment Trusts (REITs), with a focus on liability structure effects and whether or not firms target longer-run debt ratios. Our major findings are that (1) proceeds from equity offers are more likely to fund investment, whereas public debt offer proceeds are typically used to reconfigure the liability structure of the firm; (2) public debt issuers are often capital constrained and target total leverage ratios to retain an investment grade credit rating; and (3) the preoffer liability structure affects the issuance choice decision, in that firms with higher preoffer levels of secured (unsecured) debt tend to issue equity (public debt). Other notable findings are that the market for public REIT debt is integrated with the broader debt markets and that higher credit quality firms issue longer-maturing bonds.

Notes: This paper models a commercial real estate project where a wealth-constrained manager uses outside debt financing to purchase a project who’s return depends on future economic conditions and the manager’s investment in the project. It is shown that it is inefficient to finance the project with callable debt. This prediction is consistent with observed real estate financing practice. I also model the outcome of financial distress allowing for (1) debt forgiveness, (2) equity in exchange for debt forgiveness, and (3) foreclosure. The model motivates (1) why commercial real estate loans are often foreclosed, and (2) why lenders foreclose assets at fire-sale prices.
