    Notes: The effect of sub-inhibitory concentrations of trovafloxacin, a recently developed fluoroquinolone molecule, on the capability of Escherichia coli cells to maintain three different types of plasmids has been investigated by a number of approaches, including the quantification of the loss of plasmid-borne functions and of plasmid DNA by quantitative PCR. The results obtained demonstrate that at concentrations ranging from the MIC to 1/8 of the MIC, trovafloxacin induces a clear, albeit incomplete, ‘episome-curing’ effect which was observed with plasmids differing in copy number, size and nature of the replication origin of the episome. This effect was most likely not due to an alteration of DNA supercoiling.

    Notes: Abstract. Osteoporosis is a common complication in children with chronic rheumatic diseases (CRD). Although dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is increasingly being used to determine bone mineral density (BMD) in children, it exposes the subject to ionizing radiation and does not provide a measure of true bone density; in fact, in growing bones the increase in BMD is mainly caused by the increase in bone size. In recent years, quantitative ultrasound techniques (QUS) have been used in radiation-free assessment of bone density and ``bone quality'' by measurement of the ultrasound waves attenuation by bone (BUA). In the present study we made a direct comparison of BUA in the calcaneum, determined by the pediatric contact ultrasound bone analyzer (CUBA) with lumbar BMD measured by DXA, in a group of 6–18-year-old patients with CRD. The study group consisted of 53 patients affected with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (n = 29), systemic lupus erythematosus (n = 13), and juvenile dermatomyositis (n = 11). Mean age was 13.02 ± 2.69 years. In 22 patients (19 girls, 3 boys) both DXA and CUBA were repeated after 1 year in order to assess the mean percentage rate of BMD and BUA change over this time. Both lumbar spine BMD and calcaneal BUA measurements were lower in the CRD patients compared with a control group (P 〈 0.001). Calcaneal BUA was significantly correlated (r = 0.83, P 〈 0.001) with lumbar spine BMD. Age and sex correction (Z-score) did not change the relationship between BUA and BMD (r = 0.80, P 〈 0.001). A significant correlation between the mean percentage of variation (Δ%) of BMD and BUA (r = 0.76, P 〈 0.001) was also demonstrated in the 22 patients who were evaluated prospectively. Portability, ease of use, lower cost, and absence of radiation make CUBA a promising means of evaluating BMD in children.

    Notes: Abstract. Several studies have demonstrated that bone has the power of regeneration and repair. BMPs (bone morphogenetic proteins) are involved in the determination of osteoblast phenotype and bone turnover, therefore genes coding for these proteins, like BMP-4, could be considered potential candidate genes for osteoporosis. We investigated the association of BMP-4 gene polymorphism with osteoporosis in a cohort of 72 osteoporotic, postmenopausal women and 82 unrelated controls. We failed to detect any significant association between this genetic marker and the disease.

    Notes: Abstract: A model is investigated where a monochromatic, spatially homogeneous laser field interacts with an electron in a one-dimensional periodic lattice. The classical Hamiltonian is presented and the technique of stroboscopic maps is used to study the dynamical behavior of the model. The electron motion is found to be completely regular only for small field amplitudes, developing a larger chaotic region as the amplitude increases. The quantum counterpart of the classical Hamiltonian is derived. Exact numerical diagonalizations show the existence of universal, random-matrix fluctuations in the electronic energy bands dressed by the laser field. A detailed analysis of the classical phase space is compatible with the statistical spectral analysis of the quantum model. The application of this model to describe transport and optical absorption in semiconductor superlattices submitted to intense infrared laser radiation is proposed.

    Notes: Abstract The variation within a collection constituted by 36 populations of common bean (Phaseolus vulgarisL.) recently collected in Basilicata region (Southern Italy) was studied. These populations are cultivated in marginal areas of the region mainly for farms' self-consumption. An appreciable variation of seed shape, colour and type of pattern was observed; 34 populations are of climbing growth habit. The frequency of the phaseolin types within the collection was investigated. C, T and S phaseolin types were observed, the type C being predominant (18 of 36 landraces); intra-population variation was detected only for two landraces. Local populations were compared with 28 commercial cultivars widely grown in the Basilicata region and accounting for 80–90% of common bean production. Significant divergences in growth habit and frequency of phaseolin types were observed: 22 cultivars had bush growth habit and 20 showed T phaseolin type. These results stress the urgency of actions devoted to the safeguard of this local germplasm. In fact, the diffusion of alloctonous and not typical germplasm is the first step towards the erosion of useful or valuable genes present in those established local populations.

    Notes: Abstract: Rotationally resolved spectral lines in the C - X (1, 0) band of carbon monoxide are investigated under high resolution using a coherent vacuum ultraviolet laser source, continuously tunable near 107 nm. Transition frequencies are determined by calibrating against a reference standard of iodine lines, recorded with saturation spectroscopy in the visible range, yielding an absolute accuracy of 0.003 cm-1 in the vacuum ultraviolet. Improved molecular constants for the excited state are derived and no effects of perturbation are found at the present level of accuracy. Line broadening measurements result in information on the excited state lifetime of the C 1 Σ + , v = 1 state for five natural isotopomers of carbon monoxide: τ( 12 C 17 O ) = 280 ps, τ( 12 C 18 O ) = 210 ps, τ( 13 C 16 O ) = 295 ps, τ( 13 C 17 O ) = 160 ps, and τ( 13 C 18 O ) = 150 ps. Within the accuracy of the present measurements no effects of J-dependent lifetimes were observed, for neither of the isotopomers. In addition direct time domain measurements of the lifetime of the C 1 Σ + , v = 0 and v = 1 states of the main isotopomer are performed in a pump-probe experiment using a picosecond VUV-laser, yielding τ( 12 C 16 O ) = 1780 ps for v = 0 and τ( 12 C 16 O ) = 625 ps for v = 1. For C 1 Σ + , v = 0 in 12C16O and 13C16O the same lifetime is found; this lifetime matches experimental values of the oscillator strength and hence supports previous results showing pure radiative decay in this state; the error margins however do not exclude some low level of predissociation. The measurements indicate that the C 1 Σ + , v = 0 state of the 13C18O isotopomer is predissociated with an estimated yield of 17% (i.e. above the level of predissociation for 12C16O.) From the combined data predissociation yields upon excitation of the C 1 Σ + , v = 1 state are derived, lying in the range 0.84-0.91 for the five less abundant isotopomers; for the main 12C16O isotopomer a strongly deviating predissociation yield of 0.65 is deduced.
