    Notes: This paper argues that current forms of agricultural biotechnology have significant potential for developing countries; the challenge is to realize this potential. We develop a conceptual model that explains why the yield effects of GMVs (genetically modified varieties) tend to be significant and reduce chemical use, contributing to human welfare, and present results from empirical studies that support these findings. We demonstrate that the adoption of GMVs might not necessarily lead to elimination of many varieties. Instead, crop biodiversity may be enhanced. Finally, we discuss how IPR constraints can be addressed, and new institutions that are already emerging may be used to allow developing countries more access to IPRs.

    Notes: Bone deformities represent an increasing, unsolved problem for intensive farming of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar L. To increase insight into nutritional and environmental impacts on bone mineralization, 16 groups of Atlantic salmon parr were fed diets with different levels of menadione sodium bisulphite (MSB), vitamin D3, and calcium (Ca), and exposed to different levels of dissolved carbon dioxide (CO2) based on a multivariate factorial design (24). The composition of the experimental diets was either a high or low level of each of the design variables. In addition, four groups (centre points) were fed a diet with intermediate levels of all dietary parameters and exposed to an intermediate level of dissolved CO2 to record the variation among tanks. After 6 weeks in fresh water, fish were marked according to group, transferred to a common net pen in sea water and fed commercial feed for another 11 weeks. High levels of CO2 decreased fish growth both in fresh water and sea water. No visible bone deformities were recorded at any time. Dry matter, protein and ash compositions of bone and concentrations of Ca, phosphorus (P) and magnesium (Mg) in bone were not significantly affected by any of the design variables. Minor effects were observed in clinical parameters recording health performance, stress and plasma Ca homeostasis. The mean level of vitamin D3 measured as cholecalciferol in fish organs increased significantly during the freshwater period and reflected dietary vitamin D3, whereas the level decreased when fish were fed commercial feed in sea water. The level of menaquinone in liver increased significantly in response to high dietary levels of MSB, indicating that dietary MSB was converted to menaquinone in salmon.

    Notes: The transport properties of modulation, shifted modulation, and uniformly doped Al0.20Ga0.80N/GaN superlattices are presented. The modulation-doped sample is doped only in the AlGaN barriers. The shifted-modulation-doped sample has its dopants shifted by one-quarter period. Measurements reveal a strong improvement in mobility and resistivity for the modulation-doped and shifted-modulation-doped structures versus the uniformly doped structure. The modulation-doped sample has a mobility of 9.2 and 36 cm2/V s at 300 and 90 K respectively and a very low resistivity of 0.20 and 0.068 Ω cm at 300 and 90 K, respectively. Capacitance–voltage profiling shows multiple two-dimensional hole gases. The results are consistent with a reduction of neutral impurity scattering for modulation-doped structures as compared to uniformly doped structures. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Carbon nanostructures of different kinds have been synthesized by chemical vapor deposition. By modifying the deposition temperature, the catalyst material, and the hydrocarbon, nanofibers with herringbone structure, multi-walled nanotubes with tubular structure, and single-walled nanotubes were deposited. The nanostructures were purified with different treatment methods. The carbon nanostructures were characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The hydrogen storage capability was investigated for all obtained nanostructures. The measurements show that the storage capacity of hydrogen is very limited in all the carbon nanostructures. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Low-resistance ohmic contacts are demonstrated using thin p-type InGaN layers on p-type GaN. It is shown that the tunneling barrier width is drastically reduced by polarization-induced electric fields in the strained InGaN capping layers resulting in an increase of the hole tunneling probability through the barrier and a significant decrease of the specific contact resistance. The specific contact resistance of Ni (10 nm)/Au (30 nm) contacts deposited on the InGaN capping layers was determined by the transmission line method. Specific contact resistances of 1.2×10−2 Ω cm2 and 6×10−3 Ω cm2 were obtained for capping layer thicknesses of 20 nm and 2 nm, respectively. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The specific contact resistance of two types of ohmic contacts to p-type GaN is analyzed. First, an ohmic contact formed by a metal electrode deposited on a highly doped p-type GaN layer. Second, an ohmic contact formed by a metal electrode deposited on a thin GaN layer with an internal electric field caused by polarization effects. It is shown that contacts mediated by polarization effects can result, for typical materials parameters, in low contact resistances comparable or better than contacts mediated by dopant-induced surface fields. A type of contact is proposed and demonstrated. These contacts employ polarization charges to enhance tunneling transport as well as high doping. Experimental results on Ni contacts to p-type AlxGa1−xN/GaN doped superlattices are presented. The contacts have linear current–voltage characteristics with contact resistances of 9.3×10−4 Ω cm2, as inferred from linear transmission-line method measurements. The influence of annealing at temperatures ranging from 400 to 500 °C on the contact resistance is studied. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) fry were reared on a fishmeal-based diet with three different levels of vitamin D3 (0.2, 5 and 57 mg vitamin D3 kg–1 feed, ww) from first-feeding for 14 weeks. No significant differences were recorded in weight, length, specific growth rate, mortality, or kidney calcium concentration between the different dietary groups. No skeletal malformations or histopathological changes were recorded in any of the dietary groups. These results suggest Atlantic salmon fry to be highly tolerant of megadoses of vitamin D3 over a limited period of time.

    Notes: Atlantic salmon fry were reared on a fishmeal based diet with increasing levels of vitamin A (VA) (6, 122 and 938 mg retinol kg–1 dry feed) from startfeeding and for 14 weeks. Signs of VA stress, such as reduced fat stores, liver size and growth, were found for groups receiving 122 and 938 mg retinol kg–1. Signs of vitamin A toxicity, such as increased mortality, abnormal vertebral growth, and reduced growth, were found for groups receiving 938 mg retinol kg–1. These results suggest that excess VA in the early life stages of Atlantic salmon is deleterious for normal development.

    Notes: To clarify the causal links between financial activity and economic growth, a series of path models is estimated. It is shown that during the 1970s and 1980s finance was predominantly a supply–leading determinant of economic growth. The data suggest, however, that there has been a structural change and that from about 1975–80, finance was far less beneficial – and possibly even detrimental – to growth.
