Notizen: The capitalist and socialist societies of the twentieth century assigned firms different roles within their economic systems. Enterprises transforming from socialist to market economies thus face fundamental organizational restructuring. Many former state-owned firms in the transition economies of Central and Eastern Europe have failed at this task. These firms have pursued primarily defensive downsizing, rather than strategic restructuring, as a result of both internal and external constraints on restructuring strategies.Building on the organizational learning and resource-based theories, we analyse strategies available to management in privatized, former state-owned enterprises in transition economies to restructure their organization. Both internal forces promoting or inhibiting the restructuring process, and external constraints arising in the transition context are examined. A model and testable propositions are developed that explain post-privatization performance. Implications of our research point to the ways in which firms should manage and develop their resource base to transform to competitive enterprises.

Notizen: The transformation and integration of acquired businesses is subject to tensions between implementing radical change to match the strategy and corporate culture of the acquirer, and promoting what is valuable in resources and cultural attributes in the acquired organization. Analysts’ disagreement arises from different conceptualizations of the nature of resources. We present an evolutionary perspective that demonstrates not only the merits of competitive selection, but of local adaptation of transferred resources and of stimulating the development of local ones.Evidence from 18 original case studies in Hungary and East Germany shows that a defensive focus on short-term efficiency, i.e. downsizing, may fail to realize the long-term potential of the organization. Acquirers supporting an evolutionary development of their new subsidiary by providing autonomy and complementary resources might well have to tolerate some slack in the short run, but may realize more of the potential contributions of the acquired assets in the long run.

Notizen: . Paramecium tetraurelia, like some other ciliate species, uses an alternative nuclear genetic code where UAA and UAG are translated as glutamine and UGA is the only stop codon. It has been postulated that the use of stop codons as sense codons is dependent on the presence of specific tRNAs and on modification of eukaryotic release factor one (eRFl), a factor involved in stop codon recognition during translation termination. We describe here the isolation and characterisation of two genes, eRF1-a and eRF1-b, coding for eRFl in P. tetraurelia. The two genes are very similar, both in genomic organization and in sequence, and might result from a recent duplication event. The two coding sequences are 1,314 nucleotides long, and encode two putative proteins of 437 amino acids with 98.5% identity. Interestingly, when compared with the eRFl sequences either of ciliates having the same variant genetic code, or of other eukaryotes, the eRFl of P. tetraurelia exhibits significant differences in the N-terminal region, which is thought to interact with stop codons. We discuss here the consequences of these changes in the light of recent models proposed to explain the mechanism of stop codon recognition in eukaryotes. Besides, analysis of the expression of the two genes by Northern blotting and primer extension reveals that these genes exhibit a differential expression during vegetative growth and autogamy.

Notizen: : The influence of different snail species on the quality of spiced-butter preparation was investigated with regard to labeling, using sensory and instrumental methods. Although sensory as well as instrumentally measured quality attributes indicated differences between the compared species, the sensory panel did not express a preference for a particular species. Differences were most significant between Achatina fulica and Helix aspersa, and between these compared to Helix pomatia or Helix lucorum with regard to color (lightness and redness) and texture (hardness and chewiness). Differences between H. pomatia and H. lucorum were insignificant. Consequently, labeling of products prepared from H. lucorum as non-vineyard snails on grounds of scientific reason is not necessary.

Notizen: Alpha-designs have become popular in cultivar trials. Analysis is based on a mixed model. As a result of imbalance, inference tests require approximate methods. This paper investigates the Type I error control of different Satterthwaite approximations for the denominator degrees of freedom of Wald-type F-tests and t-tests in a two-factorial alpha-design with cultivars as the subplot factor and management intensities (fertilization, plant protection) as the main plot factor. Simulation results demonstrate good error control for cultivar comparison at the same intensity, with the need for an approximation which diminishes as the number of cultivars increases. By contrast, a comparison of intensities entails a more substantial departure from the nominal significance level, and this is not entirely offset by any of the approximations. The methods are demonstrated using two real data sets.

Notizen: Determination of aqueous phase diffusion coefficients of solutes through porous media is essential for understanding and modeling contaminant transport. Prediction of diffusion coefficients in both saturated and unsaturated zones requires knowledge of tortuosity and constrictivity factors. No methods are available for the direct measurement of these factors, which are empirical in their definition. In this paper, a new definition for the tortuosity factor is proposed, as the real to ideal interfacial area ratio. We define the tortuosity factor for saturated porous media (τs) as the ratio S/So (specific surface of real porous medium to that of an idealized capillary bundle). For unsaturated media, tortuosity factor (τa) is defined as 2awla (ratio of the specific air-water interfacial area of real and the corresponding idealized porous medium). This tortuosity factor is suitably measured using sorptive tracers (e.g., nitrogen adsorption method) for saturated media and interfacial tracers for unsaturated media. A model based on this new definition of tortuosity factors, termed the interfacial area ratio (IAR) model, is presented for the prediction of diffusion coefficients as a function of the degree of water saturation. Diffusion coefficients and diffusive resistances measured in a number of saturated and unsaturated granular porous media, for solutes in dilute aqueous solutions, agree well with the predictions of the IAR model. A comparison of permeability of saturated sands estimated based on τs and the same based on the Kozeny-Carman equation confirm the usefulness of the τs parameter as a measure of tortuosity.

Notizen: Procyclic forms of Trypanosoma brucei possess a phosphatase activity on their external cell surface. This activity, while it dephosphorylates [32P]phosphocasein, is inhibited weakly by NaF and tartrate but strongly by vanadate. In this work, we describe the presence of an external phosphatase activity in intact bloodstream forms of T. brucei. With p-nitrophenyl phosphate (pNPP) as substrate, these intact cells produced 3–5 nmol pNP min−1 mg−1, linearly for up to at least 30 min. The activity was not significantly increased by Mg2+, Mn2+, Ca2+ and Co2+, but was inhibited by vanadate, NaF, p-chloromercuribenzoate and Zn2+ and was insensitive to okadaic acid. Membrane-enriched fractions of parasites contained an acid phosphatase activity, with a pH optimum in the range of 4.5–5.5. This activity hydrolyzed phosphotyrosine (40 nmol phosphate min−1 mg−1) better than phosphothreonine or phosphoserine. Partial purification of this phosphatase yielded a single activity band following gel electrophoresis, a Km value of 0.29 mM with pNPP and was insensitive to the Fe2+/H2O2/ascorbate system.
