Notes: Abstract. We discuss the problem of capturing media streams which occur during a live lecture in class or during a telepresentation. Instead of presenting yet another method or system for capturing the classroom experience, we introduce some informal guidelines and show their importance for such a system. We derive from these guidelines a formal framework for sets of data streams and an application model to handle these sets so that a real-time replay becomes possible. The Authoring on the Fly system is a possible realization of a framework which follows these guidelines. It allows the capture and real-time replay of data streams captured during a (tele)presentation, including audio, video, and whiteboard action streams. This article gives an overview of the different AoF system components for the various phases of the teaching and learning cycle. It comprises an integrated text and graphics editor for the preparation of pages to be loaded by the whiteboard during the presentation phase. The recording component of the system captures various data streams of the live presentation. They are postprocessed by the system so that they become instances of the class of media for whose replay the general application model was developed. From a global point of view, the Authoring on the Fly system allows one to merge three apparently distinct tasks – teaching in class, telepresentation, and multimedia authoring – into one single activity. The system has been used routinely for recording telepresentations over the MBone net and has already led to a large number of multimedia documents which have been integrated automatically into Web-based teaching and learning environments.

Notes: The effect of electron cyclotron resonance plasma cleaning on the contact resistance between a superconducting Nb layer and a two-dimensional electron gas in a strained InxGa1−xAs/InP heterostructure is investigated. Cleaning by a He/H plasma results in a rough semiconductor surface and a high interface resistance. In contrast, by using a pure He plasma a smooth semiconductor surface with a considerably lower interface resistance is obtained. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The potential of near-field photocurrent spectroscopy for direct imaging of mode profiles of submicron-sized waveguides in optoelectronic devices is demonstrated. The technique combines the submicron spatial resolution of near-field optics with tunable laser excitation, allowing for selective investigation of the waveguide properties of the device structure. Experiments on InGaAs/AlGaAs high-power laser diodes with different waveguide designs provide direct visualization of the effect of the waveguide design on (i) the number of guided modes and (ii) the spatial profile of both fundamental and higher-order modes. The technique thus provides a sensitive tool for nondestructive in situ analysis of waveguide properties in optoelectronic devices. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The sequence variation of three exons of the major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) was examined in a lake whitefish Coregonus sp., population from the Swiss lake of Hallwil. DNA sequences from the Mhc class I A1, A2 and class II B1 exons, corresponding to the α1, α2 and β1 domains of the Mhc glycoproteins, were obtained by the polymerase chain reaction followed by cloning and sequencing. The numbers of variable sequences detected for each exon were 15 (A1), 11 (A2) and 20 (B1). Levels of nucleotide similarity ranged from 82 to 99% for the A1 exon, 58–96% for the A2 and 88–99% for the B1 exon. At the A1 and B1 exons, the nonsynonymous substitution rates (dn) exceeded synonymous substitution rates (ds) greatly within the peptide binding regions, indicating the effect of balancing selection. Sequence diversity at the A2 exon did not seem to be maintained by balancing selection (ds 〉 dn). Phylogenetic comparison of whitefish Mhc sequences with sequences from other salmonid species and more distantly related teleosts indicated shared ancestral (trans-species) polymorphism.

Notes: Abstract Two fluorescent dyes were incorporated into sol-gel derived SiO2 matrices. The dye was added to SiO2 precursors of different degrees of pre-condensation and the spectroscopic properties of the immobilized dye were measured at various aging and drying stages of the resulting gels. The significant influence of the processing parameters on the spectroscopic properties is manifested in the relative intensity of a second red shifted emission band (550–560 nm), which was observed besides the typical coumarin emission band (495 nm). The appearance of this long wavelength emission might be attributed to dye aggregation or to other reactions with the ambient matrix forced by micro porosity phenomena.

Notes: Abstract Calcium and phosphorus storage in a thin layer of titanium surface was achieved by ion implantation. We study the reactivity of this surface in response to a hydrothermal treatment. The incipient implanted species are observed to convert to Ca2+ and PO4 3-, the precursors for generating calcium phosphate polymorphs. Hydroxyapatite is formed from these precursors by an interface-liquid mediated mineralization preceded by the hydrolysis of oxygen compounds of Ca and P from the solid phase. The morphology and organization of apatite mineral is controlled by the fluid dynamics reflecting the surface remodeling to adapt to the available local environment. Exposed to calcium and phosphate ion containing solution, the hydrothermally treated surface templates hydroxyapatite deposition. Ca and P implanted Ti surface was shown to be chemically and morphologically actively involved in the interfacial reactions. ©2000 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Notes: Abstract The present paper is concerned with the determination of the measuring position of a laser-Doppler anemometer (LDA) relative to a wall. The proposed method is based on the finding that the output of a hot-wire anemometer increases when the wire, which is mounted in quiescent air parallel to the wall, is brought closer than 800 μm to the wall. For given hot-wire anemometer parameters, the hot-wire anemometer output voltage depends on the wall material and the wire distance from the wall. After suitable calibration for the wall material of the test section, the anemometer reading in a test rig can be used to find the wire position. Moving the measuring volume of a LDA-system across the wire yields an output voltage variation of the LDA-photomultiplier showing a Gaussian shape. When the maximum output voltage is reached, the centre of the measuring control volume is located at the centre of the wire and, hence, the location of the LDA-measuring position is known. All position measurements for the LDA-system are then taken relative to this point using the scale of the LDA-traversing system. If optical effects of transparent test section walls are eliminated by employing refractive index matched liquids, there are other ways to find the measuring position of a laser-Doppler anemometer relative to a wall. One such method and its application to the study of the turbulent near wall flow in a pipe is described in this paper.

Notes: Abstract  To analyze differences in flower longevity and ethylene sensitivity, we isolated Rosa hybrida gene fragments with sequence similarity to the Arabidopsis thaliana ethylene receptor gene-family. A rose gene (RhETR1) highly similar to AtERS1 had been previously sequenced. Here, we report the isolation of three additional partial rose genes (RhETR2–4) belonging to different sub-groups of ethylene receptor genes. RhETR2 clusters with AtETR1, RhETR4 with AtERS1 and RhETR1, whereas RhETR3 shows high sequence similarity to AtETR2 and AtERS2. Expression analysis of RhETR2 and RhETR3 revealed that they are differentially expressed. RhETR2 is expressed at a constitutive level throughout flower development whereas RhETR3 expression increases in senescing flowers of the cultivar Bronze which has a short floral life while it remains at low levels in the long-lasting flowers of the cultivar Vanilla. Expression of both genes was increased by ABA and ethylene treatment, but transcript abundance differed between rose cultivars with different postharvest performance. These results indicate that differences in flower life among rose cultivars could be due to differences in receptor levels.

Notes: Abstract On single crystals of the single-layer (n = 1) high-T c superconductor Bi2Sr2−x La x CuO6+δ at optimal doping (x = 0.4), the electron spectroscopies x-ray absorption (XAS) and high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) were performed. The XAS gives the intensity of the so-called prepeak of the O 1s line what is due to the unoccupied part of the Zhang–Rice (ZR) singlet band. For ARPES, the advantages of single-layer material are the absence of bilayer effects and the possibility to study the electronic properties of the normal state at a sample temperature where the thermal broadening is extremely small (〈10 meV). The controlled variation of the polarization vector of the synchrotron radiation made it possible to resolve a distinct fine-structure of the occupied part of the ZR singlet band at the Fermi level. These observations have enormous consequences for line shape analyses and the determination of pseudogaps, and thus the mechanism of high-T c superconductivity.
