    Notes: We report the chemical stability of the hybrid Fe/ZnSe/GaAs heterostructure prepared by molecular-beam epitaxy. Analyses of photoemission spectra show a remarkable chemical stability of the Fe/ZnSe(001) interface up to 380 °C, where the effective disruption of the heterostructure occurs, together with the appearance of Ga atoms near the film surface. This suggests that the ZnSe/GaAs interface is surprisingly less stable than the Fe/ZnSe one. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Two fundamental aspects of frequency analysis shape the functional organization of primary auditory cortex. For one, the decomposition of complex sounds into different frequency components is reflected in the tonotopic organization of auditory cortical fields. Second, recent findings suggest that this decomposition is carried out in parallel for a wide range of frequency resolutions by neurons with frequency receptive fields of different sizes (bandwidths). A systematic representation of the range of frequency resolution and, equivalently, spectral integration shapes the functional organization of the iso-frequency domain. Distinct subregions, or "modules," along the iso-frequency domain can be demonstrated with various measures of spectral integration, including pure-tone tuning curves, noise masking, and electrical cochlear stimulation. This modularity in the representation of spectral integration is expressed by intrinsic cortical connections. This organization has implications for our understanding of psychophysical spectral integration measures such as the critical band and general cortical coding strategies.

    Notes: A balloon-borne mass spectrometer system has been flown successfully to determine the chemical composition of polar stratospheric aerosols over northern Scandinavia. The experiment combines an aerodynamic lens which collimates the aerosols into a narrow beam, a small sphere in which they evaporate, and a mass spectrometer for gas analysis. High-speed differential pumping by two liquid helium pumps effectively lowers the presence of ambient gases without affecting the particles of the beam. Field measurements and aerosol studies inside a large cryo-chamber have shown that the concept of particle focusing, evaporation and subsequent mass spectrometric gas analysis is a reliable technique to determine the molecular composition of aerosols especially in polar stratospheric clouds. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is a frequent cause of bacterial sepsis and meningitis in neonates. During the course of infection, GBS colonizes and invades a number of host compartments, thereby interacting with different host proteins. In the present report, we describe the isolation of the fbsA gene, which encodes a fibrinogen receptor from GBS. The deduced FbsA protein is characterized by repetitive units, each 16 amino acids in length. Sequencing of the fbsA gene from five different GBS strains revealed significant variation in the number of repeat-encoding units. The deletion of the fbsA gene in the genome of GBS 6313 completely abolished fibrinogen binding, suggesting that FbsA is the major fibrinogen receptor in this strain. Growth of the fbsA deletion mutant in human blood was significantly impaired, indicating that FbsA protects GBS from opsonophagocytosis. In Western blot experiments with truncated FbsA ­proteins, the repeat region of FbsA was identified as mediating fibrinogen binding. Using synthetic peptides, even a single repeat unit of FbsA was demonstrated to bind to fibrinogen. Spot membrane analysis and competitive binding experiments with peptides carrying single amino acid substitutions allowed the prediction of a fibrinogen-binding motif with the consensus sequence G-N/S/T-V-L-A/E/M/Q-R-R-X-K/R/W-A/D/E/N/Q-A/F/I/L/V/Y-X-X-K/R-X-X.

    Notes: Abstract The restoration and rehabilitation of the native fish communities is a long-term goal for the Laurentian Great Lakes. In Lake Superior, the ongoing restoration of the native lake trout populations is now regarded as one of the major success stories in fisheries management. However, populations of the deepwater morphotype (siscowet lake trout) have increased much more substantially than those of the nearshore morphotype (lean lake trout), and the ecosystem now contains an assemblage of exotic species such as sea lamprey, rainbow smelt, and Pacific salmon (chinook, coho, and steelhead). Those species play an important role in defining the constraints and opportunities for ecosystem management. We combined an equilibrium mass balance model (Ecopath) with a dynamic food web model (Ecosim) to evaluate the ecological consequences of future alternative management strategies and the interaction of two different sets of life history characteristics for fishes at the top of the food web. Relatively rapid turnover rates occur among the exotic forage fish, rainbow smelt, and its primary predators, exotic Pacific salmonids. Slower turnover rates occur among the native lake trout and burbot and their primary prey—lake herring, smelt, deepwater cisco, and sculpins. The abundance of forage fish is a key constraint for all salmonids in Lake Superior. Smelt and Mysis play a prominent role in sustaining the current trophic structure. Competition between the native lake trout and the exotic salmonids is asymmetric. Reductions in the salmon population yield only a modest benefit for the stocks of lake trout, whereas increased fishing of lake trout produces substantial potential increases in the yields of Pacific salmon to recreational fisheries. The deepwater or siscowet morphotype of lake trout has become very abundant. Although it plays a major role in the structure of the food web it offers little potential for the restoration of a valuable commercial or recreational fishery. Even if a combination of strong management actions is implemented, the populations of lean (nearshore) lake trout cannot be restored to pre-fishery and pre-lamprey levels. Thus, management strategy must accept the ecological constraints due in part to the presence of exotics and choose alternatives that sustain public interest in the resources while continuing the gradual progress toward restoration.
