    Notes: The area under study covers 3500 km2 in the upstream part of the closed catchment basin of the salt crust of Uyuni. This crust is a remnant of the saline Lake Tauca, which covered the area about 15,000 years ago. In the downstream part of the aquifer, the Cl concentration of ground water and Cl content in the unsaturated zone exceed 20 meq/L and 18 kg/m2, respectively. With the present hydrological conditions under semiarid conditions, the ground water residence time in the study area exceeds 3000 years. Transient simulations over 11,000 years were made using initial conditions as the retreat of Lake Tauca and taking into account a low recharge during the arid mid-Holocene period. The modeling simulates ground water flow, Cl transport, and ground water residence time. It includes the evaporation from the aquifer that leads to the accumulation of chloride in the unsaturated zone. Results of the modeling are consistent with the observations if it is assumed that the Cl previously accumulated in the unsaturated zone was flushed back into the aquifer around 2000 years B.P., contemporaneously with the end of the arid period.

    Notes: Abstract The field of neuroscience has, after a long period of looking the other way, again embraced emotion as an important research area. Much of the progress has come from studies of fear, and especially fear conditioning. This work has pinpointed the amygdala as an important component of the system involved in the acquisition, storage, and expression of fear memory and has elucidated in detail how stimuli enter, travel through, and exit the amygdala. Some progress has also been made in understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underlie fear conditioning, and recent studies have also shown that the findings from experimental animals apply to the human brain. It is important to remember why this work on emotion succeeded where past efforts failed. It focused on a psychologically well-defined aspect of emotion, avoided vague and poorly defined concepts such as "affect," "hedonic tone," or "emotional feelings," and used a simple and straightforward experimental approach. With so much research being done in this area today, it is important that the mistakes of the past not be made again. It is also time to expand from this foundation into broader aspects of mind and behavior

    Notes: The strong visible photoluminescence (PL) of nanostructured silicon, such as porous Silicon and silicon nanocrystals, is studied as a function of the power and the wavelength of the excitation laser source. The position of the PL peak is a function of the fluence: when the incident fluence is increased, the PL peak is blueshifted, and it is redshifted to its initial position when the fluence is decreased back. The PL yield is strongly attenuated with the increasing fluence and this decrease is partially irreversible. The behavior is also found to be a function of the wavelength of excitation: the shorter the excitation wavelength, the stronger the fluence effect. The PL temporal behavior has also been studied and appears to be weakly sensitive to the fluence. Fluence effects are compared to temperature effects and both are noticeably different, proving the absence of heating effects in our experiment for a wide range of incident power. Auger effect and state filling are discussed in order to understand the experimental results in the framework of the quantum confinement process. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Silicon nanocrystals were prepared by laser pyrolysis of silane in a gas flow reactor and deposited on substrates by cluster beam deposition. The evolution of the photoluminescence was measured as a function of the time the samples were exposed to air. With gradual air exposure and oxidation, the photoluminescence increases in intensity and its peak wavelength shifts to the blue. At the same time, the photoluminescence band becomes wider. To remove the oxide layer, the samples were exposed to hydrofluoric acid (HF) vapor. The HF attack has no influence on the band position but leads to a smaller width. The observations can be explained in terms of quantum confinement as the origin of the photoluminescence. Only for the smallest Si nanocrystals, an interface state seems to limit the maximum photoluminescence energy to 2.1 eV. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper relates the hydrology of a volcano to its eruptive activity, which seem to be correlated. Based on the groundwater pattern previously determined by hydrologic and thermal modelling, we formulate hypotheses for the mechanisms linking rainfall and volcanic eruptions. We focus on: mechanical loading by the weight of the infiltrated rain, which might favour magma overpressure or slope instability on the eastern volcanic flank; unloading of the infiltrated water, discharged toward the ocean, which could increase the tangential tensile stress above the magma chamber. We test the sensitivity of the model to the magma chamber geometry and the rainfall distribution. The mechanical unloading of the infiltrated water is the mechanism most likely to trigger eruptions. However, the presence of a sliding surface and rainfall loading could favour the development of tensile stress in the ‘shell’ surrounding the magma chamber but with a lower intensity than in the previous case.

    Notes: Abstract. We develop several applications of the Brunn—Minkowski inequality in the Prékopa—Leindler form. In particular, we show that an argument of B. Maurey may be adapted to deduce from the Prékopa—Leindler theorem the Brascamp—Lieb inequality for strictly convex potentials. We deduce similarly the logarithmic Sobolev inequality for uniformly convex potentials for which we deal more generally with arbitrary norms and obtain some new results in this context. Applications to transportation cost and to concentration on uniformly convex bodies complete the exposition.
