    Notes: US exports grew at 10.3% per year from 1987 to 1992, far faster than the economy as a whole. This paper examines sources of the manufacturing export boom, including entry, firm expansion, and export intensity. Most of the increase in exports came from increasing export intensity at existing exporters rather than from new entry into exporting. The small role of entry relative to export intensity offers support for the importance of sunk costs in the export market. Changes in exchange rates and rises in foreign income drove most of the export increase, while plant productivity increases played a smaller role.

    Notes: Three quantitative trait loci (QTL) for scald resistance in barley were identified and mapped in relation to molecular markers using a population of chromosome doubled-haploid lines produced from the F1 generation of a cross between the spring barley varieties ‘Alexis’ and ‘Regatta’. Two field experiments were conducted in Denmark and two in Norway to assess disease resistance. The percentage leaf area covered with scald (Rhynchosporium secalis) ranged from 0 to 40% in the 189 doubled-haploid (DH) lines analysed. One quantitative trait locus was localized in the centromeric region of chromosome 3H, Qryn3, using the MAPQTL program. MAPQTL was unable to provide proper localization of the other two resistance genes and so a non-interval QTL mapping method was used. One was found to be located distally to markers on chromosome 4H (Qryn4) and the other, Qryn6, was located distally to markers on chromosome 6H. The effects of differences between the Qryn3, Qryn4 and Qryn6 alleles in two barley genotypes for the QTL were estimated to be 8.8%, 7.3% and 7.0%, respectively, of leaf covered by scald. No interactions between the QTLs were found.

    Notes: About 320 European spring barley varieties and about 40 spring barley lines were tested in the field for reaction to a local population of the spot form of the net blotch fungus Pyrenophora teres forma maculata with the imperfect stage Drechslera teres. The European barley varieties showed a wide range of disease reactions, from nearly resistant to very susceptible. At least three groups of genetically related barley varieties could be distinguished: (0)‘Agneta’ and ‘Clermont’, (2)‘Nordal’ and ‘Arve’, and (3)‘Tellus’,‘Pamina’, ‘Albert’ and ‘Birka’. The parentages of these three groups of barley are mutually distantly related and may thus constitute three different sources of resistance to the pathogen population used. The range of disease reaction is similar in varieties from different European countries but it differs among different breeding stations. The relatively high level of resistance is fairly uniformly distributed in contemporary barley varieties all over most of Western Europe. Over time, from about 1830-1982, the average level of resistance varied around 4.0 (scale value) (from 2.8 to 4.8). However, since about 1940 the variation in disease reaction has become much wider (from 108 to 6.9) for unknown reason(s).

    Notes: We have achieved a record high ratio (19) of the Rabi splitting (3.6 meV) to the polariton linewidth (190 μeV), in a semiconductor λ microcavity with a single 25 nm GaAs quantum well at the antinode. The narrow polariton lines are obtained with a special cavity design which reduces the exciton broadening due to scattering with free charges and has a very low spatial gradient of the cavity resonance energy. Since the static quantum-well disorder is very small, the polariton broadening is dominantly homogeneous. Still, the measured linewidths close to zero detuning cannot be correctly predicted using the linewidth averaging model. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: This paper uses the Longitudinal Research Database (LRD),a unique, detailed, plant-level database that covers the entire U.S. manufacturing sector in five-year intervals to examine how the manufacturing sector in Appalachia has evolved over the past thirty years (from 1963 to 1992). The research focuses on three questions:1) Is the Appalachian Region attracting new manufacturing plants at the same rate as the rest of the country? 2) Does Appalachian manufacturing employment exhibit low wage, low productivity characteristics, compared with the rest of the country? 3) Is Appalachia still heavily reliant on branch plants? The results show the manufacturing base of Appalachia in 1992 looks very much the same as it did in 1967. Compared to the rest of the country, Appalachian manufacturing is still more reliant on branch plants and is characterized by lower wage and lower productivity establishments. This result is not due to a lack of entry—manufacturing plant entry rates and manufacturing job formation associated with entrants in Appalachia are only slightly lower than for the U.S. as a whole. Job destruction rates caused by exits are actually lower than in the U.S. as a whole.

    Notes: Abstract To assess differences between object and pixel-based reservoir modeling techniques, ten realizations of a UK Continental Shelf braided fluvial reservoir were produced using Boolean Simulation (BS) and Sequential Indicator Simulation (SIS). Various sensitivities associated with geological input data as well as with technique-specific modeling parameters were analyzed for both techniques. The resulting realizations from the object-based and pixel-based modeling efforts were assessed by visual inspection and by evaluation of the values and ranges of the single-phase effective permeability tensors, obtained through upscaling. The BS method performed well for the modeling of two types of fluvial channels, yielding well-confined channels, but failed to represent the complex interaction of these with sheetflood and other deposits present in the reservoir. SIS gave less confined channels and had great difficulty in representing the large-scale geometries of one type of channel while maintaining its appropriate proportions. Adding an SIS background to the Boolean channels, as opposed to a Boolean background, resulted in an improved distribution of sheetflood bodies. The permeability results indicated that the SIS method yielded models with much higher horizontal permeability values (20–100%) and lower horizontal anisotropy than the BS versions. By widening the channel distribution and increasing the range of azimuths, however, the BS-produced models gave results approaching the SIS behavior. For this reservoir, we chose to combine the two methods by using object-based channels and a pixel-based heterogeneous background, resulting in moderate permeability and anisotropy levels.
