    Notes: The behavior of the Colle–Salvetti (CS) correlation functional based on the Hartree–Fock (HF) second-order density matrix is investigated in the case of the He atom. The analysis of the correlation hole and energy contributions show that correlation effects are not taken into account appropriately due to the missing kinetic correlation. The CS final simplified energy expression also has some problems. To address these problems, we have constructed a new correlation functional based on the HF second-order density matrix including the effects of not only electron–electron interaction but also the kinetic energy by using an adiabatic connection formula. In addition, correlation effects for opposite and parallel spins are treated independently. This functional reproduces accurate correlation energies for H–Ar atoms. Combining it with the Becke 1988 exchange functional, we get reasonable atomization energies for the G2 set. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The formation process of point defect clusters in high-purity (99.999%) iron as a typical bcc metal under the irradiation with low-energy (5 keV)He+ is studied by in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Using conventional TEM techniques, clusters induced by the irradiation are determined to be interstitial-type dislocation loops (I loops) at temperatures ranging from 85 to 770 K and cavities from 300 to 770 K. Most of the I loops are determined to lie on {100} planes, and their Burgers vector are determined to be a[100]. The temporal variation in the volume density of I loops is measured by stereomicroscopy at several temperatures. The volume density of I loops is about two orders of magnitude higher in comparison with the case of high-energy electron irradiation at the same dpa rate; hence, it is deduced that helium atoms have an effect enhancing the nucleation of I loops. The depth distribution of the loop densities becomes broad above around 235 K at which vacancies become thermally mobile, and the dependence of loop formation on He+ beam flux is weak. From these results, it is suggested that helium-vacancy complexes act as trapping sites of self-interstitial atoms and I-loop nucleation is enhanced. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The synthesis and proteolysis of the spore coat proteins, SpoIVA and YrbA, of Bacillus subtilis were analyzed using antisera. Almost no intact full-length proteins of either type were extracted from wild-type spores, while yabG mutant spores contained intact SpoIVA and YrbA proteins. We purified recombinant YrbA and YabG proteins from Escherichia coli transformants and found that YrbA was cleaved to the smaller moiety in the presence of YabG in vitro. These observations indicate that YabG is a protease involved in the proteolysis and maturation of SpoIVA and YrbA proteins, conserved with the cortex and/or coat assembly by B. subtilis.

    Notes: Abstract  The manned submersible Shinkai 2000 investigated yellow patches on the near-summit slope of Shiribeshi Seamount in the Japan Sea. Yellowish patches are often associated with seepage, and the possibility of seepage at Shiribeshi Seamount was tested by the following four lines of observation: (i) high subsurface temperature was measured at a ring-like patch, although no increase in subsurface temperature was observed at other patches; (ii) high gamma ray (γ-ray) intensity from the thorium series was recorded in the patch zone; (iii) the yellowish deposit was composed of calcite, quartz and amorphous iron compound, as seen at the yellowish patches in other seeps and volcanoes; (iv) lipid phosphate, a measure of microbial abundance, in sediments of the ring-like patch was determined, and the recorded microbial abundance was higher inside the patch than outside it. The four lines of observation are explained consistently by postulating that the seepage of warm fluid contained Fe and γ-ray sources. A hydrothermal origin of the yellow patches is not ruled out for the extinct but young (0.9 Ma) arc volcano.

    Notes: The temperature dependence of magneto-optical property in the visible wavelength region has been studied on four-element semimagnetic semiconductor CdMnCoTe films deposited on quartz glass substrates by using MBE equipment. A large dispersion of Faraday rotation was observed, and the peak of the Faraday rotation was shifted to the higher photon energies with increasing Mn concentration at low temperatures. At 180 K, the value of the Faraday rotation observed for the Cd0.647Mn0.34Co0.013Te film on quartz glass was −0.36 deg/cmG at 630 nm. It is equivalent to the value of −0.36 deg/cmG observed at 77 K for the Cd0.52Mn0.48Te film on quartz glass. At 77 K, the Faraday rotation observed for the Cd0.647Mn0.34Co0.013Te film on quartz glass was −0.49 deg/cmG at 610 nm. The value is approximately two times larger than that of the Cd0.52Mn0.48Te film deposited on the same quartz glass substrate. The origin of the enhancement of Faraday rotation in CdMnCoTe films has been discussed in terms of the magnetic susceptibility χ. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
