Notes: Abstract In many plants lipids represent up to 80% of dry weight of storage tissues. In seeds, lipids accumulate as triacylglycerols (TAGs), which are formed by an extension of the membrane-lipid biosynthetic pathway common to all plant tissues. In contrast to the conserved fatty acid (FA) composition of membrane lipids, the observed divergence in seed oil acyl chains among different species is very high. The acyl groups of seed TAGs can vary in their chain length (from 8 to 24) as well as in their degree of unsaturation. In addition to methylene-interrupted double bonds, many seeds contain TAGs that have unusual functional groups in their FAs, such as hydroxyl, oxirane, or acetylene groups. All of the major steps in the biosynthetic pathway to TAG are now known and sequence information for genes encoding most of the enzymes involved is available. Here we present the current knowledge of the metabolic mechanisms involved in the divergence from the membrane-lipid biosynthetic pathway during storage lipid formation.

Notes: [Auszug] A remarkable mystery of the copper oxide high-transition-temperature (Tc) superconductors is the dependence of Tc on the number of CuO2 layers, n, in the unit cell of a crystal. In a given family of these superconductors, Tc rises with the number of ...

Notes: Laboratory experiments were conducted to test interactive effects of calcium (Ca2+) content and the presence of humic substance (HS) on malachite green (MAG)-induced toxicity in fish embryos and larvae by means of a semistatic 144-h-embryo-larval-test with zebrafish (Danio rerio). Two kinds of reconstituted water samples were used to produce the test media by mixing salts into deionized water resulting in either hard water (↑Ca − HS), or soft water (↓Ca − HS). By adding HS two additional test media were produced (↑Ca + HS, ↓Ca + HS). MAG was tested in concentrations of 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20, 0.25 mg L−1. The toxicity ranking of MAG (mg L−1) to embryos based on 96-h-LC50 in the different test water samples is: ↑Ca − HS (0.061) 〉 ↑Ca + HS (0.123) = ↓Ca − HS (0.12) ≥ ↓Ca + HS (0.134) and on 144-h-LC50 to larvae is: ↑Ca − HS (0.038) 〉 ↑Ca + HS (0.06) 〉 ↓Ca − HS (0.077) = ↓Ca + HS (0.077). Mortality of all the groups was significantly different (P 〈 0.05). Increased Ca2+ concentrations did not protect zebrafish embryos and larvae from MAG-induced toxicity. At high Ca2+ conditions, the mortality of the embryos as well as of the larvae is reduced in the ↑Ca + HS group relative to the ↑Ca − HS group. Thus, at high Ca2+ conditions the HS does affect the MAG-induced mortality. The mechanism which causes the higher toxicity of MAG in the presence of higher Ca2+ concentrations is poorly understood. A probable explanation could be the stimulation of the calcium-binding protein calmodulin as well as the calmodulin kinase II in cell membranes in the presence of high Ca2+ concentrations.

Notes: [Auszug] Here we describe a procedure for cloning pigs by the use of in vitro culture systems. Four healthy male piglets from two litters were born following nuclear transfer of cultured somatic cells and subsequent embryo transfer. The initiation of five additional pregnancies demonstrates the ...

Notes: Summary The spectra of the mercury injection lamp can be determined by microphotometric analysis. It is shown that small quantities of additives vary the spectral distribution. This paper presents spectra and their interpretation.

Notes: Summary The fine structure of the notochord of two tunicate species — Dendrodoa grossularia and Oikopleura diowa — was investigated with the electron microscope. In Dendrodoa, the notochord consists of a cord of solid glycogen-rich cells, which contain numerous big yolk droplets. These cells, which are otherwise poor in cytoplasmic organelles, are surrounded by a layer of fibrils, to which the muscle cells of the tail are firmly attached. In Oikopleura the notochord consists of peripheral flat epitheliumlike cells, which surround a single central rodlike vacuole filled with elastic material. The cytoplasm of the notochordal cells contains loosely distributed Golgi apparatus, smooth and granulated endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondria of the tubular type and empty-appearing vacuoles. The two muscle tracts of the tail are laterally attached to the fibrous sheath of the notochord. The dorsal and ventral fin of the tail exhibit in both animals a completely different ultrastructure.
