    Notes: The transformation from smectite to chlorite has been interpreted as involving either a disequilibrium chlorite/smectite mixed-layering sequence, or an equilibrated discontinuous sequence involving smectite–corrensite–chlorite. Here, analysis of the smectite to chlorite transition in different geothermal systems leads us to propose that the transformation proceeds via three contrasting reaction pathways involving (i) a continuous mixed-layer chlorite/smectite series; (ii) a discontinuous smectite–corrensite–chlorite series and (iii) a direct smectite to chlorite transition. Such contrasting pathways are not in accord with an equilibrium mineral reaction series, suggesting that these pathways record kinetically controlled reaction progress. In the geothermal systems reviewed the style of reaction pathway and degree of reaction progress is closely correlated with intensity of recrystallization, and not to differences in thermal gradients or clay grain size. This suggests a kinetic effect linked to variation in fluid/rock ratios and/or a contrast between advective or diffusive fluid transport. The mode of fluid transport provides a means by which the rates of dissolution/nucleation/growth can control the reaction style and the reaction progress of the smectite to chlorite transition. Slow rates of growth are linked to the first reaction pathway involving mixed-layering, while increasing rates of growth, relative to nucleation, promote the generation of more ordered structures and ultimately lead to the direct smectite to chlorite transition, representative of the third pathway.

    Notes: Alpine metamorphism, related to the development of a metamorphic core complex during Cretaceous orogenic events, has been recognized in the Veporic unit, Western Carpathians (Slovakia). Three metamorphic zones have been distinguished in the metapelites: 1, chloritoid + chlorite + garnet; 2, garnet + staurolite + chlorite; 3, staurolite + biotite + kyanite. The isograds separating the metamorphic zones have been modelled by discontinuous reactions in the system K2O–FeO–MgO–Al2O3–SiO2–H2O (KFMASH). The isograds are roughly parallel to the north-east-dipping foliation related to extensional updoming along low-angle normal faults. Thermobarometric data document increasing P–T conditions from c. 500 °C and 7–8 kbar to c. 620 °C and 9–10 kbar, reflecting a coherent metamorphic field gradient from greenschist to middle amphibolite facies. 40Ar/39Ar data obtained by high spatial resolution in situ ultraviolet (UV) laser ablation of white micas from the rock slabs constrain the timing of cooling and exhumation in the Late Cretaceous. Mean dates are between 77 and 72 Ma; however, individual white mica grains record a range of apparent 40Ar/39Ar ages indicating that cooling below the blocking temperature for argon diffusion was not instantaneous. The reconstructed metamorphic P–T–t path is ‘clockwise’, reflecting post-burial decompression and cooling during a single Alpine orogenic cycle. The presented data suggest that the Veporic unit evolved as a metamorphic core complex during the Cretaceous growth of the Western Carpathian orogenic wedge. Metamorphism was related to collisional crustal shortening and stacking, following closure of the Meliata Ocean. Exhumation was accomplished by synorogenic (orogen-parallel) extension and unroofing in an overall compressive regime.

    Notes: We present results on sound wave propagation in pulsed fields up to 50 T for CsCuCl3 and (VO)2P2O7. Sound velocity and attenuation exhibit anomalies at the field induced spin transitions at low temperatures. In CsCuCl3 we observe step-like anomalies in sound velocity and pronounced peaks in attenuation at the saturation field (34 T at 1.5 K) and broader anomalies at the commensurate-incommensurate transition (14–17 T). In (VO)2P2O7 we observe a strong anomaly at the critical field when the lowest triplet branch crosses the singlet ground state (27 T at 1.6 K). All these experiments give important information on the spin state in high magnetic fields of these low dimensional spin systems and on the spin-phonon coupling. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present time and spectral resolved pump and probe studies of the intersubband dynamics in a bound to quasibound GaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well infrared photodetector dependent on the external electric field. Without bias, the excited electrons are scattered back to the ground subband with a time constant of about 2 ps. Subsequent intrasubband cooling is observed in the ground state, which gives rise to a relaxation component on a 50 ps time scale. With an applied electrical field, 35%–45% of the excited electrons escape to continuum states and are accelerated along the electrical field. Within time constants between 5 and 8 ps, the extended electrons are recaptured by wells in the low field bulk domain close to the collector contact. The redistribution of the carriers in the picosecond time regime and the screening of the external field due to the separation between electrons and donors leads to a change of the absorption spectrum for a time period shorter than the intrinsic response time of the electrical circuit.© 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Γ2–Xz1 intersubband dynamics in GaAs/AlAs quantum-well structures is investigated by time-resolved infrared pump and probe experiments. In the studied structure, the second Γ level in GaAs is nearly resonant to the first Xz level in AlAs, resulting in elastic Γ–X scattering. A biexponential behavior of ground-state recovery has been found with a time constant in the order of 1 ps for the Γ2–Γ1 relaxation and a time constant of 7 ps (at 10 K), which represents the Xz–Γ2 transfer. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The characteristics of nitrogen acquisition, transport and assimilation were investigated in species of an Atlantic Forest succession over calcareous soil in south-eastern Brazil. Differences in behaviour were observed within the regeneration guilds. Pioneer species showed high leaf nitrogen contents, a high capacity to respond to increased soil nitrogen availability, a high capacity for leaf nitrate assimilation and were characterized by the transport of nitrate + asparagine. At the other end of the succession, late secondary species had low leaf nitrogen contents, little capacity to respond to increased soil nitrogen availability, low leaf nitrate assimilation and were active in the transport of asparagine + arginine. The characteristics of nitrogen nutrition in some early secondary species showed similarities to those of pioneer species whereas others more closely resembled late secondary species. Average leaf δ15N values increased along the successional gradient. The results indicate that the nitrogen metabolism characteristics of species may be an additional ecophysiological tool in classifying tropical forest tree species into ecological guilds, and may have implications for regeneration programmes in degraded areas.

    Notes: A fast and non-destructive method for generating three-dimensional maps of the grain boundaries in undeformed polycrystals is presented. The method relies on tracking of micro-focused high-energy X-rays. It is verified by comparing an electron microscopy map of the orientations on the 2.5 × 2.5 mm surface of an aluminium polycrystal with tracking data produced at the 3DXRD microscope at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility. The average difference in grain boundary position between the two techniques is 26 µm, comparable with the spatial resolution of the 3DXRD microscope. As another extension of the tracking concept, algorithms for determining the stress state of the individual grains are derived. As a case study, 3DXRD results are presented for the tensile deformation of a copper specimen. The strain tensor for one embedded grain is determined as a function of load. The accuracy on the strain is Δε ∼ 10−4.

    Notes: A method is presented for fast and non-destructive characterization of the individual grains inside bulk materials (powders or polycrystals). The positions, volumes and orientations of hundreds of grains are determined simultaneously. An extension of the rotation method is employed: a monochromatic beam of high-energy X-rays, focused in one dimension, impinges on the sample and the directions of the diffracted beams are traced by translation of two-dimensional detectors. Algorithms suitable for on-line analysis are described, including a novel indexing approach, where the crystal symmetry is used directly by scanning in Euler space. The method is verified with a simulation of 100 grains.
