    Notes: Quality characteristics of black-skipjack (Euthynnus lineatus) muscle kept in ice were evaluated by monitoring changes in chemical, microbiological, and sensory parameters over a 24-d storage period. The K value increased linearly (r2= 0.966) from 〈 20% before d 3 to 75% at d 18. Muscle pH fluctuated between 5.7 to 6.0. Histamine did not exceed 50 ppm, while putrescine and cadaverine were 〈 40 ppm. Lipid deterioration was rather low with TBA values of 5 mg/100g at d 18. Descriptive sensorial evaluation indicated excellent-to-good attributes at d 6 and good-to-acceptable at d 18. Sensory assessment and K value gave the highest correlation with storage time, indicating a shelf life of 18 d.

    Notes: Postmortem changes of sardine muscle during 15 d storage at 0 °C were studied to evaluate its quality and functionality. No microbial deterioration was detected since trimethylamine and histamine concentration remained low with final values of ≤ 1.62 mg/100g and 0.00018 ppm, respectively. A final proteolytic activity ≤ 20 μg Tyrosine/min/g protein was detected. Lipid oxidation from moderate to advanced was detected after day 5 with values of 31.8 to 33.9 meq/kg and 26 mg/kg for peroxide value and thiobarbituric acid value respectively. Muscle protein showed no gel-forming ability. Extraction of myofibrillar protein decreased 45% and 81% at day 5 and 15 respectively. Overall results indicated that good quality was maintained during the storage period with a final K value of 50.7% when proper handling practices were implemented.

    Notes: Abstract Hydrogels are cross-linked hydrophilic polymers that can imbibe water or biological fluids. Their biomedical and pharmaceutical applications include a very wide range of systems and processes that utilize several molecular design characteristics. This review discusses the molecular structure, dynamic behavior, and structural modifications of hydrogels as well as the various applications of these biohydrogels. Recent advances in the preparation of three-dimensional structures with exact chain conformations, as well as tethering of functional groups, allow for the preparation of promising new hydrogels. Meanwhile, intelligent biohydrogels with pH- or temperature-sensitivity continue to be important materials in medical applications.

    Notes: The reaction of soda-lime-silicate glassware with model cleaning solutions gives rise to a systematic pattern of inhomogeneous corrosion. This corrosion is not uniform on the entire surface, but is localized only to certain regions of the glassware. The surface composition, as determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and the microstructure, as characterized by optical and scanning electron microscopy, vary considerably in different regions of the glassware. The visibly heterogeneous corrosion pattern, which correlates with the compositional and structural inhomogeneities, is explained in terms of surface conditions that exist during different stages of glass manufacturing. The role of sodium disilicate in solution is also explored for promoting inhomogeneous glass corrosion.

    Notes: Presentation format can influence the way target audiences understand risk-related information. Brochures or fish fact sheets are the methods traditionally used by state agencies to inform the public about fish consumption advisories and the risks from consuming fish. This study examines the efficacy of presenting information about the risks from consuming contaminated fish and shellfish in two different formats: a brochure and classroom presentation. The two instruments were developed and tested in Spanish and English, reflecting the local ethnic composition in the Newark Bay Complex. The instruments were tested on women of child-bearing age at the Women, Infants, and Children Center in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Detailed diagrams were used in both presentations, including contaminated fish species, fish preparation methods, and food chain bioaccumulation and transmission to the fetus. There were few language-related differences in the efficacy of the classroom lesson, and the main ideas were understood by both groups. Where there were significant differences in understanding about the risks from consuming fish or crabs from the contaminated waters of Newark Bay, in all cases the women exposed to the classroom lesson had a better understanding than those who read the brochure. Ninety-six percent of the women who heard the lesson understood that it was unsafe to eat fish from the port, compared to 72% of those reading the brochure. Both formats succeeded in imparting information to most women about the area under advisories, the fish species under advisories, and transmission of toxins to the fetus. Information on fish preparation was recalled less clearly, partly because women were asked to relate methods to reduce the risk from consuming fish from 11 presented, and most recalled only two or three of the list. The advantages and disadvantages of conducting short classes to women of child-bearing age are discussed.

    Notes: Land rehabilitation is proposed as a management strategy to reverse the negative consequences of tropical deforestation and land degradation. We first define the concepts associated with ecosystem modification—conversion, damage, and degradation—and those associated with ecosystem repair—restoration, rehabilitation, and reclamation. We then present a scheme of sustainable land use in the tropics, with illustrations of how rehabilitation and restoration activities fit into the overall scheme of the use of land. Because damaged lands cannot contribute effectively to sustained economic development, land rehabilitation is a necessary step for increasing the chances of attaining sustainability. Approaches for rehabilitating ecosystems are discussed, including the management of stressors and subsidies in relation to their point of interaction in the ecosystem. Finally, we illustrate the concepts of ecosystem rehabilitation of damaged, degraded, and derelict lands with examples of case studies from dry to humid life zones in island and continental situations throughout the tropics. The case studies demonstrate that opportunities for success exist, even with severely degraded lands, but a considerable amount of research remains to be done before we have a full understanding of the complexity of the task facing us.

    Notes: Approximately half of the tropical biome is in some stage of recovery from past human disturbance, most of which is in secondary forests growing on abandoned agricultural lands and pastures. Reforestation of these abandoned lands, both natural and managed, has been proposed as a means to help offset increasing carbon emissions to the atmosphere. In this paper we discuss the potential of these forests to serve as sinks for atmospheric carbon dioxide in aboveground biomass and soils. A review of literature data shows that aboveground biomass increases at a rate of 6.2 Mg ha−1 yr−1 during the first 20 years of succession, and at a rate of 2.9 Mg ha−1 yr−1 over the first 80 years of regrowth. During the first 20 years of regrowth, forests in wet life zones have the fastest rate of aboveground carbon accumulation with reforestation, followed by dry and moist forests. Soil carbon accumulated at a rate of 0.41 Mg ha−1yr−1 over a 100-year period, and at faster rates during the first 20 years (1.30 Mg carbon ha−1 yr−1). Past land use affects the rate of both above- and belowground carbon sequestration. Forests growing on abandoned agricultural land accumulate biomass faster than other past land uses, while soil carbon accumulates faster on sites that were cleared but not developed, and on pasture sites. Our results indicate that tropical reforestation has the potential to serve as a carbon offset mechanism both above- and belowground for at least 40 to 80 years, and possibly much longer. More research is needed to determine the potential for longer-term carbon sequestration for mitigation of atmospheric CO2 emissions.
