    Notes: Abstract: To clarify effects of crack speed and cross-link density on the fracture energy of acrylamide gels, we evaluated the roughness of the fracture surface and measured the fracture energy taking into account the roughness. The fracture energy increases linearly with crack speed Vin a fast crack speed region, and the increasing rate of fracture energy with V decreases with increasing cross-link density in the gels. In a slow crack speed region the fracture energy depends on crack speed more strongly than in the fast crack speed region. This indicates that a qualitative change exists in the fracture process of the gels.

    Notes: : The sensory evaluation of alkali-ion water and bottled mineral water was performed by panelists and their preferences for the taste of alkali-ion water was surveyed. Consequently, alkali-ion water made from tap water was found to taste better than any bottled mineral water; however, the activated carbon filtration water, which was also made from tap water, was found to taste better than alkali-ion water. Furthermore, smell, taste, feeling in the throat, aftertaste, and general impression of the mineral water, alkali-ion waters, and activated carbon filtration water were evaluated using the 1-pair comparison method. Consequently, alkali-ion water and activated carbon filtration water were more highly rated than commercial bottled mineral water.

    Notes: 1 The present study was carried out to pharmacologically identify the β-adrenoceptor subtype that mediates isoprenaline-elicited relaxation in the isolated guinea-pig tracheal smooth muscle, to answer the question whether it is β1- or β2-subtype? 2 Isoprenaline as well as salbutamol, a well-known β2-selective adrenoceptor agonist, produced a concentration-dependent relaxation with a pD2 value of 8.12 vs. 7.54 for salbutamol. 3 Isoprenaline-elicited relaxation was not affected by β1-selective antagonists, atenolol and CGP-20,712A, within the concentration ranges supposed to antagonize β1-subtype: atenolol, ≤10−6 m; CGP-20,712A, ≤10−8 m. 4 By contrast, the concentration–response curves for isoprenaline as well as salbutamol were shifted rightwards in a competitive fashion by atenolol at the concentrations ≥3 × 10−6 m. However, pA2 values of atenolol against isoprenaline (5.86) and salbutamol (5.71) were consistent with the value corresponding to β2- but not to β1-subtype (around 7.00), and these values were not significantly different from each other. 5 Competitive antagonism of the relaxations to isoprenaline and salbutamol were also obtained with β2-selective antagonists, butoxamine and ICI-118,551. Against isoprenaline and salbutamol, the pA2 values of butoxamine (6.51 vs. 6.81) and ICI-118,551 (8.83 vs. 8.90) were substantially identical. Thus the primary mediation of β2-receptor in the relaxations was strongly supported. 6 The present findings provide evidence that the β-adrenoceptor which mediates isoprenaline-elicited relaxation of guinea-pig tracheal smooth muscle is essentially β2- but not β1-subtype. The present study also indicates the importance of using multiple receptor antagonists with different pA2 values to pharmacologically identify the responsible receptor subtype in smooth muscle mechanical responses.

    Notes: We demonstrated the measurement of the high frequency (HF) magnetic field of a write head with the phase detection magnetic force microscope. An amplitude-modulated current was applied to the head coil to detect the force gradient induced by the HF magnetic field. Spatial resolution of this method was higher than that of the deflection detection method previously proposed. By the phase detection method, dynamic HF magnetic fields at the poles of the write heads were clearly imaged. HF magnetic field leakage was observed along the P2 pole shape on the air-bearing surface. The frequency dependence of the write head dynamics up to 350 MHz was also investigated. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The diffusion behavior of beryllium implanted in silicon carbide has been investigated by secondary ion mass spectrometry. The shape of the as implanted profile changed considerably after annealing at temperatures above 1300 °C due to redistribution processes. In addition, strong out diffusion into the annealing ambient and in diffusion into the bulk material was observed. Moreover, beryllium diffuses faster in epitaxial layers than in bulk crystals grown by sublimation. Effective diffusion coefficients with an activation energy of 3.1 eV were determined in bulk crystals in the temperature range 1500–1700 °C. Beryllium is suggested to diffuse via interstitial sites. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We observed the x-ray-excited optical luminescence (XEOL) of erbium-doped silicon (Si:Er) thin films to make a site-selective x-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurement of an optically active Er atom. The undulator beam was used for the increment of the electron population in the excited state, and following XEOL at an infrared wavelength of 1.54 µm with minimum absorption loss in the host Si was detected. The edge-jump and XAFS oscillation were successfully obtained at the Er LIII-edge. This spectrum originated from inner-shell excitation and relaxation of only the optically active Er atom, indicating that site-selectivity at an atomic level was achieved.

    Notes: Abstract Inbreeding depression may induce rapid extinction due to positive feedbacks between inbreeding depression and reduction of population size, which is often referred to as extinction vortex by inbreeding depression. The present analysis has demonstrated that the extinction vortex is likely to happen with realistic parameter values of genomic mutation rate of lethals or semilethals, equilibrium population size, intrinsic rate of natural increase, and rate of population decline caused by nongenetic extrinsic factors. Simulation models incorporating stochastic fluctuations of population size further indicated that extinction by inbreeding depression is facilitated by environmental fluctuations in population size. The results suggest that there is a positive interaction between genetic stochasticity and environmental stochasticity for extinction of populations by inbreeding depression.

    Notes: Abstract We present an overview of the gene content and organization of the mitochondrial genome of Dictyostelium discoideum. The mitochondria genome consists of 55,564 bp with an A + T content of 72.6%. The identified genes include those for two ribosomal RNAs (rnl and rns), 18 tRNAs, ten subunits of the NADH dehydrogenase complex (nad1, 2, 3, 4, 4L, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11), apocytochrome b (cytb), three subunits of the cytochrome oxidase (cox1/2 and 3), four subunits of the ATP synthase complex (atp1, 6, 8 and 9), 15 ribosomal proteins, and five other ORFs, excluding intronic ORFs. Notable features of D. discoideum mtDNA include the following. (1) All genes are encoded on the same strand of the DNA and a universal genetic code is used. (2) The cox1 gene has no termination codon and is fused to the downstream cox2 gene. The 13 genes for ribosomal proteins and four ORF genes form a cluster 15.4 kb long with several gene overlaps. (3) The number of tRNAs encoded in the genome is not sufficient to support the synthesis of mitochondrial protein. (4) In total, five group I introns reside in rnl and cox1/2, and three of those in cox1/2 contain four free-standing ORFs. We compare the genome to other sequenced mitochondrial genomes, particularly that of Acanthamoeba castellanii.
