Notes: Managing long-term infrastructural assets, such as real estate, buildings and equipment, is becoming more topical at the strategic level. Such assets are reported to comprise 25 per cent or more of corporate assets and occupancy costs represent 40-50 per cent of net operating incomes and are often the third most expensive item (behind labour costs and IT). Managers with little experience of the strategic management of long-term assets (SMoLTA) often find this a challenging agenda. This paper reports exploratory research on how managers are addressing the SMoLTA and is drawn from the views of senior managers in 25 organisations of varying sizes from the public and private sectors. In addition, the paper uses data from research on management practices in four case companies that have excellent reputations in this field, synthesising the findings into algorithmic form. This algorithm is developed and presented as a tentative framework which aims to help facilitate managers in aligning corporate and infrastructure strategy.

Notes: The division between academic knowledge and its relevance for practice is an enduring problem across many fields. Nowhere is this division more pronounced, and resolution of its negative features more required, than in academic management research and its relationship to management practice, for the advent of the knowledge revolution requires that organizations capitalize on all available assets including knowledge assets when improving performance either by increasing efficiencies or ensuring mission delivery in the medium term. How companies might achieve this has become a key question. This paper reports the "co-production" model of knowledge creation and transfer through a novel case of this in practice. It outlines how academics and managers can work together using a "systematic review" of the science base to synthesize management knowledge and ensure its transfer. In doing so it offers management academics and practitioners a new model for the production and application of knowledge.

Notes: Natural genetic transformation in Streptococcus pneumoniae is controlled in part by a quorum-sensing system mediated by a peptide pheromone called competence-stimulating peptide (CSP), which acts to coordinate transient activation of genes required for competence. To characterize the transcriptional response and regulatory events occurring when cells are exposed to competence pheromone, we constructed DNA microarrays and analysed the temporal expression profiles of 1817 among the 2129 unique predicted open reading frames present in the S. pneumoniae TIGR4 genome (84%). After CSP stimulation, responsive genes exhibited four temporally distinct expression profiles: early, late and delayed gene induction, and gene repression. At least eight early genes participate in competence regulation including comX, which encodes an alternative sigma factor. Late genes were dependent on ComX for CSP-induced expression, many playing important roles in transformation. Genes in the delayed class (third temporal wave) appear to be stress related. Genes repressed during the CSP response include ribosomal protein loci and other genes involved in protein synthesis. This study increased the number of identified CSP-responsive genes from approximately 40 to 188. Given the relatively large number of induced genes (6% of the genome), it was of interest to determine which genes provide functions essential to transformation. Many of the induced loci were subjected to gene disruption mutagenesis, allowing us to establish that among 124 CSP-inducible genes, 67 were individually dispensable for transformation, whereas 23 were required for transformation.

Notes: [Auszug] During the Younger Dryas event, about 12,000 years ago, the Northern Hemisphere cooled by between 2 and 10 °C (refs 1, 2) whereas East Antarctica experienced warming. But the spatial signature of the event in the southern mid-latitudes and tropics is less well ...

Notes: Sexuality in the oomycete Plasmopara viticola, the causal agent of grapevine downy mildew, was studied using isolates from five populations from North America and Europe. Leaf discs of Vitis vinifera cv. ‘Chardonnay’ were inoculated with either individual single-sporangiophore isolates, or in all possible pairwise combinations of 25 isolates from New York State, USA. The occurrence of oospores in leaf discs indicated that the pathogen was heterothallic with two mating types, P1 and P2 in a ratio of 11 : 14 for this population. Heterothallism was confirmed when three representative isolates of each mating type from New York were coinoculated with each of 40 isolates from populations of P. viticola from Michigan, Missouri (USA), Germany and Italy. For each isolate tested, oospores formed with either test isolates of P1 or test isolates of P2 mating types, indicating that the isolates were exclusively P1 or P2 only. For these same isolates, no oospores formed as a result of self-crosses. The ratio of P1 : P2 mating types for all isolates in the study was 27 : 38, statistically equivalent to a 1 : 1 ratio according to χ2 analysis (P = 0·68).

Notes: The influence of a vertical magnetic field on the integral heat transfer and the temporal dynamics of liquid metal Rayleigh–Bénard convection is studied in an experiment using a small Prandtl number (Pr(approximate)0.02) sodium potassium alloy Na22Kr78 as a test fluid. The test section is a rectangular box of large aspect ratio 20 : 10 : 1 that covers a parameter range of Rayleigh numbers, 103〈Ra〈105, and Chandrasekhar numbers, 0〈Q〈1.44×104. The integral heat transfer across the layer is evaluated from the measured temperatures at the upper and the lower boundary and the applied heat flux. Local, time-dependent temperatures are obtained from a four-element temperature probe placed in the middle of the liquid metal layer. The noncoplanar arrangement of the thermocouples enables the evaluation of the time-dependent temperature gradient vector that allows us to estimate the local isotropy properties of the time-dependent flow. From the damping effect of Joule dissipation, the convective heat transport decreases monotonically with increasing Chandrasekhar numbers. Fluctuations of the temperature field are damped significantly by the magnetic field. However, this effect is selective with respect to frequency. Long period fluctuations are strongly damped whereas short period fluctuations are less damped or may even be amplified. The observations show that significant convective heat transport is practically always associated with time-dependent flow. The fluctuating part of the local temperature gradient confirms the horizontal isotropy of the velocity field; no predominant orientation of time-dependent flow structures is established either with or without a magnetic field. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe fast recovery at a wavelength of 1550 nm in a multiple-quantum-well (MQW) saturable absorber with InGaAsP quaternary wells and barriers using electric-field-induced carrier sweepout. The MQW SA is integrated with a distributed Bragg reflector in a p-type–intrinsic–n-type structure. Pump–probe measurements show that the recovery time can be reduced from 〉900 to 28 ps by application of a 151 kV/cm sweepout field. We measure the dependence of the recovery time on the energy of the saturating pulse and explain our results in terms of carrier dynamics in the sweepout field. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
